My daughter just got back from Ghana, after 5 months studying at the University of Ghana. The camp is not closed. She volunteered at the refugee camp.

They need so much. We have so much. Why have we allowed the atrocities of this land continue? Some of these children and families do not even have enough food to eat for one day.

White Tara Productions, are you going to be responsible when these refugees (because they voluntarily gave up their refugee status!!) have to go back to Liberia? What abuse! Hey- YOU get your facts straight. Read some material on refugee laws. It MIGHT help.

If you are an international lawyer who works with refugees, we would be delighted to speak with you further. However, what you are saying does not coincide with what the UNHCR in Accra told us: specifically, that they typically resettle 2% of any refugee population in any particular country. This has taken place regardless of whether or not the refugees in question were former child soldiers... and indeed, we know former combatants who have been resettled.

Now, as for this 'cinema verite' piece, I can only say that it's sad these refugees are being abused. By stating publicly stating that they might 'take up arms again' and saying that they smoke weed everyday, these refugees are really asking to be sent back to Liberia. Who's going to take them now? If they say that they are combatants or war criminals, they are no longer refugees and therefor outside the UNHCR's concern. They are no longer refugees in that case.

Unfortunately, the UNHCR's position is that Buduburam is now "closed"... and this has been the direction in which things have been heading since at least the last two years, according to people who work for the U.N. at the camp. Have you read the petition that may be downloaded from our website? In any event, as I am sure you are aware, many of the "refugees" at Buduburam have never been recognized by the U.N. because the issuance of ID cards was quite limited...

Look, nobody is TELLING them to go back. It's a free choice. The UNHCR has the obligation to inform these people of these choices. If the government close the camp, they are not going to be sent forcefully to Liberia. They are still refugees, the government cannot do that.

Hello Yogo ! Thank you for sharing your opinion... Personally, based on the 20 hours of interview material we collected, I disagree with you that people are not being "told" to go back. That message came across very clearly to us, as well, from the various signs and so forth posted around the camp. Do you live at Buduburam, out of curiosity?

@whitetaraproductions I have friends at that camp. They must now purchase water, No jobs are allowed, no support of any kind is offered. It is a real rough situation and the only aid comes from outside when people send money by Western Union.

It's ridiculous to tell these refugees to go back to Liberia where they suffered terrible abuse as children and murder, rape and mutilation are still rife. The abusers are free and can be police or soldiers for the government. On my recent visit I was told that UNHCC recent "aid" at the camp was to fingerprint everybody and the Ghana gov't says it is going to close the camp as soon as July 2007. SHAME
