  • lovely and haunting; great video. Thanks for posting Rob

  • One thing I've gotta say..There's something very special about you Brits...

  • A great Norther floater and a nice video. The girl at 0.58 makes me go weak at the knees.

  • Great stuff....

  • I have been playing this track over and over for the past few days . . . and can't understand why we didn't hear more about this Northern Soul movement here in Oz! I'm almost 57 - and started seriously listening to the radio about '67. Anyway - this is EXCELLENT work!!

  • simply wonderful!!

  • That video is soo wonderful, has feeling! rightous mane!

  • oh boy ! just when i was thinking there just aint any more out there, i come across this little gem of a tune, brilliant from a girl group i have never heard before, we live and learn eh ? thanks for posting, real nice tune,

  • Thanks so much for putting together this fabulous little gem.

  • Nice to see footage of Sandy Holt, iremember seeing more of the dancing footage on some tyne tees documentary, when they're dancing to afternoon of the rhino.

Anyone have that footage? - Be nice to see it again as it includes my old buddy from bradford Vernon who was in most of the dancing comps at wigan alongside little paul also from bradford.

Thanks for at least some of the footage Rob.

  • Thanks Steve ...the original broadcast programme clip with soundtrack appear to be hard to track down. However, someone got hold of the footage and placed another track, instead of AOTR (other comments have mentioned 'Interplay') on a DVD Doc.

  • Thank you for the info Rob - I'm hoping some kind person will upload that footage.

  • That's Youngstown Ohio

  • Great sound Rob and I have to say you did a brillant job with the video. Really captures the essence of what Northern Soul is. Soul from the heart !KTF

  • Great video.

  • OMG this song is so sweet! Killer Motown sound with a beautiful lead vocal and unmistakable Motown harmony! This is the first time I ever heard this song and I loved it upon the opening instumentals! Thank you sooo much for posting and introducing this song to me!!

  • Great tune, great video ,Really captures the emotion of the music we love..Brillant!

  • That is a good footage! But which town is in it?

  • Maria, it would have been nice to say LA, however I assume some of the footage was taken in Chicago.

  • Increidible footage! Love it! greats from Spain!

  • two of my old mates dancing in the background, sue hollis and julie howard rip (god bless her soul) from rochdale.

  • GREAT DANCING MUCH BETTER THANT CASINO CLIPS,TYPE TOM JONES FEELS LIKE NORTHERN SOUL. HAS BEST NORTHERN DANCING BY FAR.WITH THOSE GREAT DANCERS INCLUDED AND MORE.

  • I notice other people's musical choices on Facebook, and sometimes despair. What they constitute as a good tune, generally speaking, means some bland song and video which their army of friends rave about. But then I tune into songs like this one, and realise that I obviously listen to music at some higher level. Ps...I'm glad that I do. x

  • Sweet soul sound from a sweet soul group - sweets all round!

  • Possibly Sandy Golden on vocals, the same backing track is used on her "When We're Alone" on Masterpiece, also produced by Nate Fortier.

  • @tony65uk who sandy golden

  • nice track, the quality of the dancers is of a level i remember, unfortunately you dont see at alnighters these days, most of us would break a hip tryin. but we have our memories of heroic dancin feats. god bless the few that still have the moves, i love to see.

  • Has anyone (Rob?) got the full Omnibus show as it was originally shown?

  • Nice compilation, video & music. Wonder if the people in the video clips (60's, black, afro american ) ever thought they would achieve some modest fame in the future and have 50+ british, white fans admiring their music, fashion, soul. Weird, eh!!

    Keep on keeping on. KTF

    Dave

  • where can i get the film of the dancers

  • Great!!...x

  • what a beautiful video

  • love your videos!! btw can SOMEONE, ANYONE post "Women Like it Harder" by Milton Parker???

  • DAVE YOU LOOK THE BUSINESS....

  • I remember that clip being on Telly - I was convinced that when it was shown the tune they played over the top was (wait for it) - Mike Post Coalition - Afternoon of the Rhino. I also thought there was a clip over a girl in a clothes shop going through the racks with Interplay - Derek & Ray played over it. Mind you - it was years ago :-/

  • dave here again from the film the girls where from rochdale and one of them was nicknamed shake a leg i think it was julie, ive been after footage of this for years great blast from the past

  • hi if i remember rightly it was filmed in a studio at manchester poly and the main track we danced to was interplay, derek and ray borrowed off richard searling for the day frank elson who wrote for the blues and soul mag was with us all day taking photos .

  • Many thanks for the information Dave, several people have enquired about where the 'UK dancers' footage was shot. Also the movement of the dancers (speeded up) would suit the rhythm and breaks in Interplay.

  • its a pleasure Rob great to see that particular footage as the only clip i have is of the dancing we shot at the Casino which we did at the Wenesday night session, We got a paid a tenner plus our maels during the day, I bought all my mates a beer in the bar and still had loads o dosh left ha ha and i was thinner

  • where can i get a clip of the nothern soul dancers

  • You could just key in 'Northern Soul You Tube' and be spoilt for choice!1

  • great to see the vid as it features lil ole me dave formerly of horwich now in carlisle, sandy holt and johhny burke cant remember the girls soz , the film was for the omnibus programme BBC we filmed it in manchester during the afternoon then on to the casino in the evening, cant believe i had all that hair

  • Great information from one of the stars.

    Thanks Dave for your comment.

Was the vid filmed in the BBC Manchester studios and also, could you possibly recall what track/s you were originally dancing to at the time it was shot?

  • nice one. I remeber one of the girls in the video. 'Shake a leg Beb'.......from Bolton? nightmare

  • Love this track and the video is pure quality! ktf

  • Hi Rob,

It's definately Sandy with the double belt. The black guy is Caeser and I think the other guy is Keb (not sure). The two girls in the background are (I think) Julie (black hair) and Sue Hollis, both from Rochdale. Happy days.

    Drew.

  • Sorry not Keb, maybe Jethro?

  • Thanks for dancer's ID's Drew.

  • 1M% Jethro......there's more of this clip on another video........it was take about the same time as the TOTP appearance. Top mate. Hear he's in LA now.

  • Thanks for your comment.

Now and then we are rewarded with some interesting docs.

  • Love this Rob. right up my street, many thanks.

  • Glad you like it - thanks

  • can you tell me where the video of the people dancing in what looks like a school gym was taken and is it authentic seventies

  • Not sure about the location/venue. However, pretty sure the footage is from the 70's with original 'rare soul' dancers.

  • Definitely seventies... i remember watxhing it on tele. It was part of a documentary avout different youth cultures and dance styles. It was my first experience of Northern cos i was a young southerner..... long time ago... .

  • Are you sure that's Sandy Holt.

Where was this taken Mr M's?

  • yes thats him alright,no its not Ms,but i do recall them closing Mr Ms to all but a few to do some filming during this england,im trying to recollect what the beachcomber looked like inside but cant for the life of me remember. i think his offsider neil was with him during the Ms filming, then in the daily mirror soon after

  • You are absolutely right, of course it is, noone could copy copy that style (although I did try many times in my bedroom, to the dismay of my parents).

    Could be the Beachcomber.

I never saw that Daily Mirror stuff (wonder where I could get hold of it?)

I didn't start going to Wigan till about 3 months after This England, wish I had.
