Nughtwalk: You are wrong. This song had been sung by French soldiers in WWI, too. In French, of course. If you look on Google: "Ich hatt einen Kameraden", you find an English version, too. There is the spirit of reconciliation in this song! The poet Ludwig Uhland, a democratic member in the Paulskirche parliament 1848, wrote it in 1809.
