The 444 makes a wonderful single shot pistol cartridge. I have a custom 444 Marlin Thompson Center Contender and it's capable of 5 shot groups of just over an inch at 100 yards. The 444 doesn't loose very much velocity when you go from a 20 inch barrel down to a 14 inch one. I can easily get 2,000 fps with a 300 grain bullet in my pistol. Shooting it is a breath taking experience but no where near as punishing as a Freedom Arms 454 Casull with 300 grain bullets at 1600 fps.
The Corbon 305 gr Flat Point Penentrator is a darn good round as well. I use a bag of #6 shot on my shoulder to manage recoil punishment at the range, While hunting i never feel it.

@TheJomogogo I just put up a 2" thick piece of bulletproof glass from a gas station 100 yards out and blew 3 holes through it like it wasn't even there with the Hornady leverevolution 444 ammo.
The .444 is powerful, but for long range shooting you would probably be better off with a 30-06 or a .270. At close to medium range though, you can't beat the knockdown power of a .444 except with a .458 magnum, and they don't even make those anymore.
