I posted this yesteday on my Facebook page: Today I was thinking if I ever get back to Philly I would look up the man who taught me to play drums, George "Butch" Ballard. I think of him now and then, especially on MLK day. When I googled him I was deeply saddened to learn he had passed away last October. Rest In Peace Butch. You were my first "life coach." I have not played drums for 30 years, but I carry your lessons with me always. Thanks to Marc Adler for emailing this video to me.
Amazing--particularly at 89! An interview with Mr. Ballard is featured in "The King of All, Sir Duke," a 2001 book by Peter Lavezzoli. Thanks for posting this clip.

Mr. Butch was a very important person in my young life here in philly he was my drummer teacher for 4yr in the 70's

Butch played with me in my Trio. He was great! Sweet man. People LOVED HIM!!!
