  • oh yeah if you have hemmoroids people, do not sit for 3 1/2 hours to watch it. be warned . jk lol.

  • I'll review it and say that the ultimate cut is the one i prefer not liking the other two versions of the film as the comedian is too dark so you really dont care about the main character thier investigating his death as he's such a bastard. the ultimate cut with gerad butler comic makes it work as a tale of dark irony much better. i havent read the comic at all so im not biased.

  • 8:47 To me, the "Black freighter" did not work well in the book either.

I wish i could get a book without the confusing parallel comic..in a comic part.

  • GIANT SPACE OCTOPUS!!!!!!

  • great review. i loved the ultimate cut

  • the way that the novel was designed , the story just dosent mean the something without the story of the black freighter.

  • Just watched all 3 cuts of the film in 3 days. I have to say, the Ultimate Cut is my favorite. Whereas you said you thought Black Freighter worked for the first few segments, I HATED it for the first segment only, but as it goes along it got so much better. The only one I really didn't like upon 2nd viewing was the one in-between the Dr Manhattan sequences. If I were to grade each cut on a scale of 1-10:

    Theatrical- 7

    Director's- 8.5

    Ultimate- 9

  • @redsoxfan3418 i half agree as well, i liked the black freighter all the way through though and it makes it work as a tale of dark irony. i did not like the other two cuts of the film as the comedian is too much of a bastard and the characters have too many problems to like.

  • @libertysunbeam2 I love The Comedian in all of the cuts. And, I don't feel that way about the characters. I think their flaws make them much better characters.

  • @redsoxfan3418 ehe not to me, i can do without the superhero's with ed. angry and obnoxious superheros are difficult to care about.

  • i dont get the ending at allll please explain i dont get the journal thing plzzzzz explain!!!pleaasee!!

  • i dont get the ending at alll!!!!pleeeeaaasee explain plzz i dont get the journal thing!!

  • I completely agree with you. The Director's Cut was PERFECT. It amazes me everytime I watch it just like how much info and everything was just shoved in my face in only 3 hours. It's what makes it so awesome. Then the Black Freighter short was also completely awesome. But then once they were put together in the ultimate cut... it was just... well "jarring" lol. And I also agree that at first it was working for me but then it just got so annoying switching back and forth.

  • i just finished watching the Ultimate cut. There are a few moments where it worked it flowed, but the majority just didn't work at all. It was very jarred and confusing. if a person whose never read watchmen or read, would be like "WTF is the shit." But as a fan whose read the novel, I apreciate the effort, and I enjoyed it,, but it was very flawed.

  • Yeah, exactly. It is basically the highest quality fanboy porn ever. But that's it. Doesn't stand alone.

The Director's Cut is undoubtedly the definitive cut of the film. That stands alone as a fascinatingly complex science-fiction political satire.

  • i have no seen the ultimate cut

and im planning to get it

but i was expecting that i will b kinna jam packed

    but im huge watchmen fan

    i love watchmen

so i must buy this dvd set

  • i just want to know what u thought about the watchmen movie in general? u like it?

  • I talk about it right at the beginning of the video. Great film. Fascinatingly complex science-fiction political satire.

  • i just gotta ask.....have you read the book?

  • @GlumPhoenix

I can't fault the theatrical cut, can't wait until the directors cut comes out here in New Zealand. Still freakin waiting

It'll still probably be my favourite film ever

  • I don't get it?? black freighter works well in the book, but not in the movie?? how is that different?? I got the ultimate cut for christmas and it was way better than the theater version. the ultimate cut is almost close to the book.

  • In the book, TBF is seamlessly integrated into the story. It flashes back and forth but feels like one story. In the movie, it's very jarring. It's like taking a commercial break.

The UC is not close to the book. The way they integrate TBF is NOT at all how it's done in the book. The UC is a total mess. The book is not.

  • I've been debating whether or not to get the ultimate cut or directors cut. Thanks for getting me the right direction. :)

  • great review! Still gonna get it though, i am a HUGE Watchmen fan.

  • Yeah, if you're a "HUGE" fan of the book movie, go for it. I didn't like it, but I'm still glad I bought it because I'm such a fan.

  • i get it now thanks alot :)

  • can someone explain to me who is Black Freighter? was he one of the watchmen?

  • LOL

The Black Freighter is the name of a pirate ship in the story, "Tales of the Black Freighter."

In our world, comic books are dominated by superheroes. In the alternate history of Watchmen, comic books are dominated by pirates. "Tales of the Black Freighter" is a pirate comic book being read by a kid during the story. The story in the comic book is interwoven with the main story in New York.

  • Comment removed

  • Wow just like the book the Black Freighter takes ya out of the story.

  • No, in the book, it's seamlessly integrated, and ironic connections are made to the main characters. Often, the TBF dialogue is clearly commenting on what's happening with the main characters.

But not so in the movie. The TBF segments were little more than commercial breaks.

  • Great review. Makes me wonder what version I'll buy now. I'm leaning towards the director's cut.

  • I actually really liked this, the only real problem I had was the last scene with the two Bernies.(not the black freighter part, that was great)

I don't know if I like the DC more, after all I've only seen it once. But I can say I definately liked this version more than the theatrical version. Even though I do love the theatrical version, I don't think I'll be watching it again.

  • I prefer the TC to the UC.

The TC has some big flaws, but overall, it still fundamentally works. Unlike the UC, which just doesn't work at all. A total mess.

The DC is clearly the best version of the film.

  • I liked this version more than the TC just for being more faithful to the novel.

It was a mess at parts, but like you said, it was and interesting mess.

I think I do prefer the DC to this, but since I don't own it (saw it at a friends house) I don't think I'm gonna buy it.

    Good review.

  • I disagree about the UC being more faithful. The book is not a mess. The UC is a mess.

The TC may have some flaws, but it still fundamentally works. Captures the important themes of the book better than the UC does. The UC is just a big melting pot of blah.

  • yeah you are probobly right. the TC being better is just my opinion. I respect yours.

oh and what do you think of the watchmen motion comic?

  • what aboot the octopus thing? i love the octopus thing is it in the movie?

  • while I agree that the graphic novel will always be the superior experience, I must say that I liked the Ultimate Cut. Are there any diff extras on the blu-ray vs regular DVD?

  • Thanks man, now I make up my mind... there's no really a good reason to buy the Ultimate Cut, I have the theatrical version on blu-ray bought here in Mexico, the Motion Comics and the Tales on DVD, so I will buy the Director's Cut to complete my collection.

    That was a convincing review.

  • I'm inclined to agree. While I personally will pop in the Ultimate Cut whenever I want to watch the Watchmen simply for completionist sake, I'll probably throw in the DC whenever someone shows some interest in seeing the film for the first time. I think the added length and awkwardness of the Black Freighter scenes do sort of detract from the overall impact of the movie, especially with the example you gave for the final segment.

    Good review!

  • Hmm. I expect I'll still watch the DC in the future.

I don't think the Ultimate Cut is somehow more "complete" than the Director's Cut. That implies that the DC is somehow missing something. And it's not. The DC is the movie. Snyder's movie.

The Theatrical Cut is incomplete. The DC isn't.

It's not like Snyder had the TBF scenes in, and then had to cut them out. That's not what happened. He finished his movie (DC), and then later decided to ADD the TBF material just as an "experiment."

  • Well, hmm, there is some truth to that.

Still, just to cover for myself, I did say for completionist sake, not really that the DC was missing something. More of a video game term, I know, but I think it works: "the kind that enjoys... ...maximizing the play time of any individual game."

I'll watch the UC simply because I want as much Watchmen in one viewing as possible, hah hah.

  • so would you say the director's cut is a better buy than the ultimate cut?

  • Wow. Nice review. Critical, articulate, and fair.

  • So is the UC worth it for the extras?

    I like your review.

  • The only new extras are the two audio commentaries. Both of which are not very good.

  • very interesting review! I will have to see if i get this or not, since i haven't even seen the DC yet (won't be released here in germany -.-) and if you say it's only for die hard fans, which i am not, i'll consider just buying the DC and Black Freighter separatly.

  • How are the special features on this?

  • Although I think the Ultimate Cut is the best one, I never took into consideration the shock value for the first time viewer of the cut to the destruction of New York.

    Good review by the way.

  • I really respect and liked you review, but for me the Ultimate cut is the best version of the film.

  • Do you think the interweiving of the Black Freighter segments would have been better if they followed the book more closely with the interwievings?

  • am waiting for this to be released in england, watchmen is an amazing film however never experienced it in blu-ray but have a ps3 now! so am watching the watchmen!
