Hell, if it weren't for the name I wouldn't even know what song this is supposed to be. It's pretty terrible. So far the only cover of this song I've liked was done by The Alter Boys, and it's also the closest to the original. Don't fix it if it ain't broke.

I usually love Cat Power, but she doesn't exactly capture the feel of the Tom Waits original in this cover. More than that, she doesn't exactly make her own interpretation of the feeling. It's the same song with less vocal tonal accuracy and slightly more modern musical equipment. I'm just not feeling it. :/

I adore this version and it's my favorite, but Scarlett's isn't entirely bad. You have to give her credit for making music that's not the typical bubbly pop that comes from other actresses turned singers.

Very emotional reading, unlike Scarlett who has all the emotion of a milkshake. Very raw and gritty, like most early Cat Power. And no, I wouldn't say that Chan is so fortunate, whatever bad s**t happened to her when she was young really f*cked her up good and only her natural resilience and talent and more than a little luck have kept her alive.

the song 'lives' by Tom's remarkable accentuated voice. He uses his voice not only for singing but also to show 'details' of the sung text.

The version of the two girls are carried by the music, their voices are 'singing the text'.

Cat power tries to do it in her own , Scarlett in a more 'fabric softener' way...

Therefore, you can't compare this version with Tom's.

And what the listener would like more is a matter of taste.

I preffer scarletts version (tom's comes first ofcourse) only because cats version has no rythm, it sounds ok to begin with but a bit to regina spector to me. overall its slightly painfull on the ears to listen to after a while..

scarlett's is quite bland... she just is a boring person unfortunately. i feel like chan's take on the song has a quality of such raw emotion, i love tom's version as well as this one. but i am not a fan of scarlett's. maybe the music may be better in scarlett's, but the combination of chan's singing plus the minimalist instrumentation make for such a brilliant take on an already great song
