We did the exact same thing in my grade 5 class, and I'm 18 years old now. Not that big of a deal, yes there was a black child there, there were also aboriginal children, but we were all aware of the purpose behind the lesson and parents had no issues with it.

Slavery was horrific and degrading, far more than fifth graders can imagine. They need to be exposed to the horrors rather than the Fox News rhetoric that says slavery was in the past, let it go. I think the mother was offended for the wrong reasons. I think the teacher was doing the right thing in teaching children about slavery and not white washing it but making sure they understood that it was not pleasant. KUDOS to the teacher for not glossing over that painful part of our history.

if this were truly about social studies, why didn't the teacher have the black child play one of the masters and one of the white students play as the slave? if your goal is to inform/instruct about the evils of slavery, there is really no need to distinguish between races. seems the instructor had an ulterior motive.

This did it's job as that black kid has felt first hand how terrible slavery was, how degrading it feels just for a few minutes to feel like less than a person that our ancestors and many others felt for centuries. @mysterymediacorp: Empathy was the point of the lesson and having been to slave plantations, re-enacted being a slave in middle school I get the reason why it was done. Reading about the holocaust and traveling to the Auschwitz camp to get an idea of the hell that took place are two different things that can have a lasting effect as was with roleplay exercises. I am a history professor at a major university. Re-enactments are fine but there is a line between responsible pedagogy and insensitive ignorance. This teacher crossed that line. I wonder how re-enacting Auschwitz would go go over.
Sometimes to make history come ALIVE, process drama is necessary. I think this is a situation that got taken out of context or made out to be bigger than it really was. Now if this was a MIXED class and only the black kids were made to be slaves, I'd have a problem with that. Since we don't know the full story, I will not pass judgement.
I am a teacher...we do re-enactments all the time...sometimes the kids reactions are OTT and sometimes it's not. In the end we ALWAYS debrief and discuss: feelings, actions, reasons for behavior during activity, and relate it BACK TO the time period in which it really occured. I did one on segregation and racism where I divided my class and gave privileges to the smaller part and treated the larger part like dirt. They hated it and got the message that it was not fair but happens in real life.

Im not too offset by this b/c as TheDynastQueen & others noted: this is what some african prisoners of war were subjected to without remedy. This type of expriment does have a lesson to teach. Im sure that some "white" children were (should have been) subjected to the same experiment so that all children (people) can learn about the atrociousness people were subjected to. Slavery was horrific and degrading, far more than fifth graders can imagine. They need to be exposed to the horrors rather than the Fox News rhetoric that says slavery was in the past, let it go. I think the mother was offended for the wrong reasons. I think the teacher was doing the right thing in teaching children about slavery and not white washing it but making sure they understood that it was not pleasant. KUDOS to the teacher for not glossing over that painful part of our history.

@station4hiphop: This child emotionally felt what millions of our ancestors did except they weren't allowed to do anything about it like he can today all because of what they went through. The teacher should have said sorry but this exercise hits kids at the most basic level of understating, emotion, in a safe way so they don't diminish the hurt of discrimination of others as they know what it feels like. This doesn't work with all kids or events but it further embeds into them why it's wrong.

Personally, I see nothing wrong here. If he walked away embarrassed and hurt, then GOOD! The teacher got her lesson a crossed! Now he knows what our ancestors felt when they were being sold and torn from their families. NOW he can appreciate the clothes on his back, that nice house he lives in and the food he's able to eat. @muzikman81: It was, another black student was a master and other ethnicities were slaves/masters so it wasn't just one black kid that was singled out to be a slave, it was half of the class of other races whose past are also filled with slavery/racism. I do agree that permission should have been given though. In my school we also did roleplay to feel why things were wrong instead of just reading and being told it was wrong but I guess giving the kids regardless of race equal parts was racist.

I think I might have to disagree somewhat with the parent in this video...SOMEWHAT. Im african american myself, but I feel like this would be a good way for all the children to be able to see how it may have really felt (In a minute sense) back in that time, instead of just talking about it. I feel like when its just talked about, it gets brushed of very easily. BUT, I do feel like the school should have at least got permission from the parents before they went ahead and did it.

I can see that teachers want to teach their kids as much information as possible...but this is taking it way to far. Im kinda surprised that this school didnt really do nothing about it. Why make a 10 year old feel like this? White or black, there is really no need for it. Its degrading and unnecessary...even if it is only a history lesson. The problem is alot of teachers don't know their limitations. A 10 year old has a very broad point of view; they can see the smallest things as embarrassing. if this were truly about social studies, why didn't the teacher have the black child play one of the masters and one of the white students play as the slave? if your goal is to inform/instruct about the evils of slavery, there is really no need to distinguish between races. seems the instructor had an ulterior motive.

@abovefilms: He did, one of the black students was a master. There were only two black kids in the class thus the others were minorities/white slaves and masters. This did it's job as that black kid has felt first hand how terrible slavery was, how degrading it feels just for a few minutes to feel like less than a person that our ancestors and many others felt for centuries. Maybe the teacher should have gotten permission first but the obvious goal was for the kids to get a glimpse of the past.

@mysterymediacorp: Empathy was the point of the lesson and having been to slave plantations, re-enacted being a slave in middle school I get the reason why it was done. Reading about the holocaust and traveling to the Auschwitz camp to get an idea of the hell that took place are two different things that can have a lasting effect as was with roleplay exercises. The teacher should have gotten permission from parents first but I saw no problem just like the other black student's parents didn't.

I am a history professor at a major university. Re-enactments are fine but there is a line between responsible pedagogy and insensitive ignorance. This teacher crossed that line. I wonder how re-enacting Auschwitz would go go over.

Sometimes to make history come ALIVE, process drama is necessary. I think this is a situation that got taken out of context or made out to be bigger than it really was. Now if this was a MIXED class and only the black kids were made to be slaves, I'd have a problem with that. Since we don't know the full story, I will not pass judgement.

I am a teacher...we do re-enactments all the time...sometimes the kids reactions are OTT and sometimes it's not. In the end we ALWAYS debrief and discuss: feelings, actions, reasons for behavior during activity, and relate it BACK TO the time period in which it really occured. I did one on segregation and racism where I divided my class and gave privileges to the smaller part and treated the larger part like dirt. They hated it and got the message that it was not fair but happens in real life.

The kid didnt give a shit, they are making this out to sound like the kid was an actual slave. In my elementary school we pretended to be the Donnor party on the Oregon Trail and we had to act like we were being cannibals, but i didnt give a shit.
This is a giant over reaction to a situation in which no one was harmed in any way. It seems the only person who was somewhat offended was his mom, and we know how over protective and panicky moms are about their kids.
