@laughing 1986 there is no sheet music for the exact way I'm playing this. I took the setting from Liam O'Maonlai's album "Rian" and it's not exactly the way he plays it either. I suggest you track down his album well worth it! and learn it by ear from there or from what I've done here. If you need a jumping off point go to the Session.org and search for it. I caution you. What's written there is NOT what I'm playing. It's just bones of the tune. Use your ears! :-)
I have a generation D whistle and I have been typing up a bunch of whistle players(Good) on youtube for help but none have. It seems that any songs i want to play (From Maddie's moon, Lord of the rings ect.) I am missing a couple more holes at the top and bottom. My whistle has six holes, am i missing any If not how do you get the high and low notes? PLEASE HELP!! I WANT TO PLAY AND DANCE!!!!! lol
@TheWarnings6@TheWarnings6 You have just as many holes as everyone else. 6 for simple system flutes and whistles. Whistles are generally diatonic in two octaves. With a "D" you can easily play in the key of D and G. A "C" whistle will give you C and F and a "Bb" Bb & Eb and so on. You can get other keys by half holeing but it's usually not needed. You can play "lord of the rings" on any whistle. Having trouble getting second octave? There are more than enough notes really! :-)
What is this thing you do, where it seems like you briefly change to the 2nd octave, then immediately back down to the 1st quickly? What is that called, I want to learn how to do that.
@THEFINALHAZARD Hi there, where exactly are your hearing that? Give me a time stamp and perhaps I can figure out what you are hearing. I'm not doing anything particularly unusual in this tune. I'm sure I can help you. If I can play this. No reason you couldn't play it just the same or even better! Cheers! :-)
OK! I hear what you are asking. I think the technical term is "Pedal" but I'm not sure fully applies here as I just may misunderstand the term myself. :-D What I'm doing there is a short roll (a cut and tap/strike) on "G" (I'm playing a Bb whistle so it's obviously not actually a G but most learn in a D whistle so you should know where your fingers go) then the pedal 2nd octave D back to G up to E back to G ending on the high D. Punch the octaves for effect. That's it! :-)
hey hope you can help me with this: after playing my generation d whistle for a while it started having some stains where my fingers would be placed (holes and two behind) is that in any way normal and if so how do I clean it?
It's normal. There is a lacquer on the brass ones that just wears away as you play it. Most folks don't bother to shine them. You've earned that patina from play. You whistle should wear it with honor. :-) Cheers! A
It's a B flat Generation. They generally don't sound that good. but you can learn how to improve the sound of a cheap whistle at the web site chiffandfipple-dot-com
hey my names olly and i just brought the same generation tin whistle as you have in this clip but i think there is something wrong with my one because when ever i try to play it it sounds horrid and i dont know if its something im doing or if there is a fault in the whistle please help
That sounds great, you play extremely well. i am now begining to learn to play the tin whistle and i was just woundering where i might be able to get the sheet music for ths song for when i am good enough to play it ;P. My girl friend has done up to level 4 in theory and up to and is on level 7 in practical with her flute, and she is teaching me. i hope that with time and some practice i can play as well as you :)
@krypticflow1 Thanx! Well... there are two common versions of the Rainy Day that I know and they are both different to a certain extent. I don't use sheet music for Irish music generally and this particular setting/variation I learned by ear from the playing of Liam O'Maonlai off of his Rian album. You can find this album and tune on iTunes or just learn it from me here. I even play it differently than he does... and so it goes. You practice and you can play BETTER than me. :-) Cheers!
@aanvil Thanks for reply :) and again youv done an amazing effort learning by ear and making it sound that good, ill have to keep practicing and hopefully i can play as well as you one day. looking forward to hearing more of your music, best of luck. :D
@FantasyBookWriter hehe... well I can teach you a simple very tune in about 20 mins even if you have never played one before. How long does it take you to get good at it? I dunno... the goal posts keep moving forward for me so I haven't got there yet. I'm sure having fun though. What I have learned though, is that it isn't about the instrument but the music itself and the people that play it... and who you play with! Get a whistle get some tunes in your head and get going! :-) Cheers!
I started playing when i was 50. I'm now 58 and I lead an Irish band. The whistle is an easy instrumen to play as long as you confine yourself to irish music.
in real they sound realy different i got the brass version but its 2 octaves lower and got close to the low D in the melancholic sound wen played slow
Thanks so much; i missed that. I play since one year and a half now and there are still some tiny details that I need to work on. Like: breathing. Tone. Rhythm. Details like those.

Generation, Feadog, Oak. I don't care for Waltons or Clarke but others like them. Generations have a rep for bad quality control but they have improved much and honestly I haven't really ever got a bad one. Gens offer many other keys. Get a D. I also like Bb and Eb.
Pay over 10 bucks for a and cheap D you've paid too much.
I'm new to the tin whistle, and i haven't played any music in 8 years since the trumpet in middle school.
I just picked up a cheap oak whistle in key of D and I was wondering what's the difference between that and the Bb that you are playing, i noticed that it is longer than mine...does it play just lower than a D then?
Well it has nothing to do with seeing. You don't look a your finger ever. If you did you'd never be able to play.
I play to the side because it allows me to direct the air stream to the side of the windway. It gives me more control, increases the back pressure and reduces the wind requirements a little. Its a bit like putting your thumb over the front of a water hose.
Some players do this others don't. Its a personal choice.
wonderful! i'm learning the whistle too, do you play the low whistle? i'd like to start on one, just dunno which is best for beginners, is there any you'd recommend? something not too pricey?
Ya know... most Gens aren't really that bad out of the box. Its more important to learn to play than worry about if its the whistle. Its fun to learn about the different types of whistles though. If anyone starting out it worried it its the whistle or them that is the issue... 95% of the time is not the whistle. ;-)
Beautifully played. Has that Gen been tweaked at all? Just ordered a stock one from eBay and am not expecting it to sound great, but you never know, I might get lucky.
Hi, when you say you may have put a bit of ax in the head, do you mean in the windway, or the window? Cheers, great vid, and I just bought a nicked Bb. I like it!
Its interesting. There is no cultural ownership of music truly as much as people wish to think so. But one never knows. Perhaps some Greek influence during Roman rule of Briton. You never know... everyone borrows from the Greeks it seems.
Yeah, its a fun tune. Thank you for the kind words. If you look for the album I referenced in the info you can see where I got it from. You can find the tune on iTunes. I'd love to visit Argentina some day. I have a few Argentine friends up here... beautiful people they are!
Hey amarinesj, You are the States so its easy enough to go to Amazon and search "Tin Whistle"
You can get a book/cd/combo pack and you can learn very quickly from that. There is a Walton's whistle for about 8 bucks but you'll do better with the Guinness Irish Black Whistle CD Pack... some new/used for 18 bucks! good price for that... and is actually a Feadog whistle thay make for Guinness. Its a great whistle to start on.
Good luck. Ask me anything you want about whistles. Glad to help! :-)
Thanx Jim. Thanks for the kind words. Means a lot.I've got more variation on this chune now. Its fun at high speed. On Irish... I'm only half Spaniard you see. ;-)
I loved playing my nickel Bb by generation, I think they sound pretty nice. Unfortunately, I wanted to make it tunable like I'd done with some of my other whistles.... now the mouthpiece is crooked and won't move at all.... and it's off with itself....
@laughing 1986 there is no sheet music for the exact way I'm playing this. I took the setting from Liam O'Maonlai's album "Rian" and it's not exactly the way he plays it either. where do you buy irish tin whistles?

Hey amarinesj, You are the States so its easy enough to go to Amazon and search "Tin Whistle"
You can get a book/cd/combo pack and you can learn very quickly from that. There is a Walton's whistle for about 8 bucks but you'll do better with the Guinness Irish Black Whistle CD Pack... some new/used for 18 bucks! good price for that... and is actually a Feadog whistle thay make for Guinness. Its a great whistle to start on.
Good luck. Ask me anything you want about whistles. Glad to help! :-)

I loved playing my nickel Bb by generation, I think they sound pretty nice. Unfortunately, I wanted to make it tunable like I'd done with some of my other whistles.... now the mouthpiece is crooked and won't move at all.... and it's off with itself....
