Oh WOW! what a great Documentary!!!! Depeche Mode is one of my all time favorite bands, the scene with Dave in front of thousands of people gave me shivers!!! I love this movie!!! THANK YOU!!!!!
I wonder whats to come next? or has culture come to an end of sorts? Since electronic music is no longer shocking to anyone anymore and has been re-hashed as a cul-de sac and self parody so many times - but those early days of electronic music had the original spark that made it all so interesting. I make music inspired by this period on my own for fun, but its all just a re-hash of whats already been done long long ago . How could music be interesting again?
@civ1002 I think culture, technology and human innovation is reaching it's peak. We'll have to see what happens after the spiritual awakening in 2012.
Seminal 80s synthpop pioneers HEAVEN 17 are marking the 30th anniversary of their debut album, PENTHOUSE AND PAVEMENT, by releasing a 2 disc DVD set featuring a full live concert, filmed in Sheffield in March 2010, and the acclaimed BBC2 documentary charting the band's career. Plus the first 200 fans who pre-order the DVD set at the band's website will receive a copy signed by the band.
Thank you so much for the best New Wave documentary I have ever seen. It all makes sence to me. Now I have seen the light. The best music in the world.
On Vienna at 3:20 - "In 1982 along came a song..." Well, Vienna was released in the summer of 1980. We all make mistakes, but you would expect the BBC to get their years straight in a documentary like this. Especially one that describes the evolution of this music rather cronologically.
Apart from that, a great documentary about some great music!
I cant get pt 9 but fuck you Sony or whoever the fuck is blocking it. You dumb fucks are dinosaurs and I will make sure to never give you a cent again!
Only Depeche Mode and Alan Wilder could make that kind of music, it was Depeche Mode's People Are People re-release of A Broken Frame and Construction Time Again, i fell in love with electronic-music! Thank you Alan Wilder,Dave Gahan,Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher
Just watched Parts 1-8 - can't watch Part 9 because of copyright laws ( I live in the USA ) ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!! Whats so special about part 9 ? Parts 1-8 had loads of music, videos, clips etc. thru them?. Thanks Zarez for uploading this though - it was amazing what I saw and heard. Incredible music from many incredible artists and people - thank you for sharing what you could. I'm a fan of many of the musicians in this piece.

question to the britons: what's with the "lot's of money"-yell at 6:20 ? Seems to be an important reference to the culture of the eighties only known in britain
@Hilarius 'Loads of money' was the catchphrase of a character by comedian Harry Enfield who appeared every week on a Friday night music show in the UK. Harry once said that Marx hoped that spending power would promote social change if it were put in the hands of the proletariat but this character showed if it ever did then we'd just go down the pub and spend it.
What about Japan?! I guess I understand they ignore Suicide because they are American but Japan formed 1978 and was increasingly synthetic with every album.
I dont know which is worse that WMG would want the music blocked or that Youtube is so pathetic that they would do it. The music industry is desperately clawing to stay alive and they are doing exactly the wrong thing every time.
I know that Joan of Arc was probably a schizophrenic, was certainly illiterate, and was definitely an English-hating Frog... but still, judging from OMD's promotional video of her, I would
Martin Gore is on good form here. That comment about the foreman made me laugh.
Looks like he has lost quite a bit of weight since he kicked the booze. He looked dreadful in the Touring the Angel DVD. Pissed up and bloated. A bit like me these days... :)
@quantizerx I'm not an electronic musician myself but that must be SO bloody annoying. Some seem to think that using synths, samplers etc is a piece of cake, people still have that ignorant attitude about it to this very day. I'd like to see 'em try doing what some of these guys did.
*LOL* ...That made me laugh out loud as well. You can't tell a machine/synthesizer to write music for you, can you? Everything comes straight from someone's mind first, doesn't it? And it always will no matter of how many fingers you had to use to make it. The overall product is the most important thing, isn't it? :-)

fu sony music for blocking pt7 of a documentary (at least in Germany). You do not realize that this is promoting "your" music. How stupid is that?
But you can be sure that I will never (never!) buy any music or films from your company anymore.
You live in the past, you are an enemy to culture and I will see part 7 via a proxy.
