just brought a new laptop since my last laptop (sony vgn-cs21z) had backlight problems, battery couldn't hold a charge and the fan made a god awful noise (worse than this). when i brought the new laptop and mentioned these problems the guy at the shop said he never buys sony computers. they just overcharge for cheap components
My vgn-cs13g made this exact same noise. The noise is caused by the fan shaft hitting the plastic fan casing when the fan actuates. The rotor is drawn into the magnetic field which appears to be missaligned with the rotors free standing position. I annoyed me immensly so I pulled the laptop down, modified the fan to add a stainless thrust plate to hold the rotor in position. I think alot of the other cs fan failures here are from the shaft wearing through the plastic causing blade contact.
My fan was doing this and now it sounds even worst i feel like such a sucker for purchasing it and this post is probably in dire need of some seemingly well positioned punctuation... FML!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
sounds like it's snoring.. that would be annoying if it goes off like every second. mine makes a diff noise but also really annoying and goes off every second
Hello, could you please check my video "Normal fan sound for Sony Vaio CS series???" to see if that is the "normal" CS fan noise, cause I'm panicking that it's not. Thanx!
Faulty fan motor..KNOWN Sony defect. You must have Sony repair. WARNING: Back up files before repair. I got my VAIO back and Sony corrupted the op system, apps Word, Excel and printing. A system restore has to be done and apps reinstalled...total nightmare!!! I want my money back..Sony defers to warranty and Sony Centre retailer to guarantee. Only after 2nd repair can I get an exchange..after 3rd, a refund. DON'T BUY SONY..tell your friends and file a complaint to consumer protection agency!!!
Hey I have a newer CS290 and I called Sony with the same problem, its a known issue with recent CS series models they sent a tech to my house to replace the fan. I suggest you do the same.
I bought a VAIO VGN-CS320 with the same problem. Started after 2 months. Already repaired once, going back for another repair. This is a line of VAIOs with defective fans; it has nothing to do with dust. I've had laptops run for years in the same environment without fan problems. Sony should issue a recall, this problem is affecting many people who bought a VAIO CS and it's damaging Sony's reputation of quality.
yah mine started doin this about 2 months after buying but now its getting allow worst, now that i see its affecting lots of people obviously its a faulty fan, and i agree they need to issue a recall damn and i always thought sony was one of the best...
actually my fan got fucked up so I reported it to sony and they send someone to my house to change the fan. he said that it was the bearing of the fan got a little bit loose. and now it works just fine.
Bought my GF the VGN-CS320D, doesn't make noises like this at all.
Battery life sucks, but the fan is rarely if ever on. I just put my ear to the computer and it doesn't even sound like a fan is running but she is busy in multiple apps + browsers.
Trying to find an extended battery as that is the biggest issue.
got CS180 and facing same issue, i m so annoyed now after reading full list of same complaint, i even talked to the technical guy available online at Vaio service center, he simply asked me to bring my pc to any nearest sony vaio service center and get it checked physically, there is no service center in pakistan:@ where should i go!! he didnt even bother to mention that it is manufacturing fault!! they suck... as well as there after sales support!
ALL RIGHT!!! so i got the sony vaio cs vgn cs290. the fan was starting to make that annoying noise but i did what SVUx3 posted to do. His post is in this comments page. Anyway the noise is gone and it's back to normal. What effects, turning the harddisk on all the time will have, i don't know...but it's working fine now. Try it for any sony vaio version to see if it works. You can just change the settings again if it still makes a noise. I'll post again if the noise returns(hopefully not!!!!!!!)
As soon as I took my Vaio CS out of the box and plugged it in, the fan would turn on every 5 seconds. It's really annoying. I keep my house really warm. Could that be the issue? I wonder if I should get a refund. Do all Vaios have overactive fans?
Mine does exactly the same! I've returned it to Sony, who replaced the fan. But it is still doing the same thing. Did you get yours fixed? Does anyone know how to stop it happening??
hey bro i just got a sony vaio cs215 about a week agao and my fan goes on and off like every 5 seconds..i dont get the chirp noise but this is still extremely annoying any luck on fixing this fan issue?
a ver todos los vaio CS tienen este fallo, así que si estabas pensando enc omprarte uno, mejor compra otro pq ademas viene con el vista pre intslado y es una caca
wat do u mean theirs no more CS? i just got this comp a few months ago and it sounds like shit and its a CS and their sendin a tech to my house to replace the fan, the dude i talked to on the phone said allot of people who own a CS series are having the same problem, its a faulty fan!
oh i see wat ur sayin, yah thats true CS series is done but for those of us who have them were gunna keep having these problems with the fans till they come out wit a new version of the fan hehe,, other then the fan ur right this comp is very good, itd just be nice not to have problems on shit that u buy brandnew but thats how they make em so u allways have to buy new shit, just like tvs now adays and most other electronics...
I have the same problem, and I went ahead and pop it open, and the problem is that the fan is a two piece sytem which is assemble via a magnet, so the problem is that there is to much play between this two components, so when the fan stops there is a vabrating action which causes the two magnets to hit each other. in other worths that part is poorly madem the fix is simple, the fan needs to be replace by an upgrade which has not come out yet, will just hava to wait and see.
This is correct - i played with a spare fan when a tech came to replace mine. The fan spindle easily slides out.
Another, easier, fix is to have a software update that simply keeps the fan on all the time by instead of turning it off, leave it on at its lowest RPM until cooling is needed.
return it! I've even re-oiled mine, which worked 100% for about a week until the noise came back (I guess the oil leaked out because of how the fan is mounted). I've gone through several replaced fans, even got to keep one from the last tech.
I really dislike this laptop now for this and because my caps lock light burnt out (I'm tired of getting it repaired).
haha...i swear to god I'm hearing the same sound on mines as i listen to your recording. Fuck this I'm returning this tomorrow. This laptop is so sexy but i can't stand the noise!!

for anyone with this issue, i have a potential fix. i've been through 3 fans and all had the identical noise. the third time, a tech was sent to my house and after the fan still would not stop creaking, I tried disassembling the fan assembly, pulled out the fan and fan-spindle, and put a drop of 3-in-1 oil in the hole. so far, the fan buzzing is gone and the fan overall is a little quieter. my guess is that sony's batch of fans for this model didnt have enough oil.
sony replaced my fan, only to return it with one that makes a louder, longer noise, with vibration that i can feel through the casing. sony is sending a tech to my home on thursday or friday with a newer model fan which should fix the issue. i will try to take pics and document the disassembly process if anyone needs to know for themselves. if you're having the issue, CALL SONY NOW!

@SVUx3 hi im trying what you said and i cant change the hard disk to never cuz there was no button for it and my power plan is balanced can you please help me the fan is really annoying, thanks.
sounds like a frog xd i'm getting a new one next month (CS21S) does anyone know if CS11S makes the same strange noise? (we've got completely different models in europe)
I agree with brightst4r. I'm looking to replace a 17" HP. I love my HP but its a little to big to be carring around in a backpack. I had been shopping around awhile and the CS was prefect in performance, size and looks. The noise the fan makes kills all the CS Vaio's positives.
Sony agreed to listen to the problem I was having with the CS but I decided to return the CS for a refund instead. The tech I talked to from Sony said "if the problem you are having does not affect the performance of the CS, there's nothing we can do".Just didn't want to part with the 3 DAY OLD CS so Sony would return it to me & tell me that there is nothing wrong with it. I do give Sony credit ofr wanting to resolve my issue. If it wasn't for the noise,I would have been very happy with the CS.
hey guys, i was actually looking into buying a cs290.. does anyone know if the fan problem still exists in these newer models? i'd be really grateful if someone could reply or send me a message. thanks~ <3
don't get one! the noise will drive you crazy. people are still having the problem. i brought mine back and got an hp that doesn't have an annoying fan problem.
(the main reason i like it is because its the perfect size and allows me to customize for the highest specs [which i actually DO need for my work] while still looking nice.. other laptops ive looked into either look nice with crap specs or have high specs and dont look so nice)
I'm planning to buy a CS290 too and i've looked at all the youtube vids about the fan noise, but most of the models people have been complaining about are CS1... series and not many are CS2... series.. so did you ever find out if anyone has the 290 and if it has that problem??
i dunno, sorry :/ i actually ended up with an HP DV5 Special Edition which is a 15'' screen. I decided 15 would be better than 14 since i need to edit my photos. it looks real nice, and im quite happy with it so far. good luck with your search though~
Does anyone know how to disassemble these things? I can't seem to get the rear part separated from the top (it looks like the entire gray base comes off). Thanks.
hey, can u please send me a message when it's back? Sony offered to take mine back for extensive testing but I refused since I think that even if they replaced the fan the new one would have the same problem sooner or later..
This is the EXACT sound I heard when I first got this laptop too! You`re so right it`s a complete nuisance. I brought it back to the SonyStyle store and the guys there had the gall to tell me that I should learn to live with it since all the new laptops will be like this. They said it in a very condescending way. EXCUSE ME, but I am not going to pay $1000+ for a frigging defective laptop!
i, know. I've looked up stuff about it and people are having the same problem. i brought it to circuit city and they are going to check it out then give me a new one. people have done the same thing and the new laptop they got still made the noise. it's really disappointing because it's a nice laptop, but with an annoying fan problem
just brought a new laptop since my last laptop (sony vgn-cs21z) had backlight problems, battery couldn't hold a charge and the fan made a god awful noise (worse than this). when i brought the new laptop and mentioned these problems the guy at the shop said he never buys sony computers. they just overcharge for cheap components

This is correct - i played with a spare fan when a tech came to replace mine. The fan spindle easily slides out.
Another, easier, fix is to have a software update that simply keeps the fan on all the time by instead of turning it off, leave it on at its lowest RPM until cooling is needed.

I really think it's a hanging wire hitting the blades from what I hear. I'm gonna take mine to a shop and see if they can open it up for me to see.

thnks a lot, it would be very hekpful if you told us what is causing the noise, maybe even take a video showing the fan when you open your computer.

Just got my laptop 3 days ago and mine makes the same sound. I called Sony and they are sending me a box to ship the laptop to they for inspection.
I hope they can fix it cause I like the notebook.

hey, can u please send me a message when it's back?
