I think they purposely toned it down because it was a middle piece of a 30 minute program, and they were looking to still have room to build to the dramatic final. That's my take, anyway.
I think considering how huge (one may say oversized) the choir is this is remarkably good - all of the words are very clear which is not easy! I agree with TheRealmsOfGold that while very well played the organ registration is very dull (Finzi requests great and pedal reeds and such - where were they?!) if you compare this version with the St John's College, Cambridge one this is blown to pieces - St John's has excitement, great phrasing (e.g. more to enRAvish) and the boys especially are superb
As usual, this choir's diction is impeccable. Text is entirely clear despite how many people you have in your ranks. I must admit, though, I feel the phrasing and organ registration is a little anemic. Anyhow, this is a great piece. Thanks for posting.
