@crazytimechris Boss RC-20XL Loop Station, i'm pretty sure that's what he uses, i have one as well, works like a charm. if you're willing to spend some more money i'd recommend getting a better model (they have more capabilities).

Unless you perform using some PC digital medium, I recommend the Boss RC-50. I originally bought the DL-4 for its looping capabilities, but ended up getting into delay so much that I needed a replacement looper. You can't go wrong.

Sorry such a late query to your post, but, what is a mute? What are you referring to?

It's a little piece of rubber that you put on the bridge to soften the sound. They're mostly used in orchestral settings from time to time when the composer wants a full string sound but less volume. As a soloist, it rounds out the tone, typically you'd use one only for effect once in a while but he seems to have it on all the time. Maybe he just likes the way his fiddle sounds that way or it's easier to mic. You can see him adjust the mute a bit at 1:11.
