To all the people who claim Seinfeld is crap, I challenge you to name a better sitcom running in the nineties. Matter of fact I challenge you to name a better sitcom running in the 2000s or present day, because I know you can't name one.
@JohanStarDragon The British one? Honestly, that show that, by the creator's admission was influenced by Seinfeld? The show that the critics constantly compared to Seinfeld? That show!?
@JohanStarDragon It only seems that way because you're probably watching Seinfeld from a Post-1998 perspective. Because other sitcoms have shamelessly ripped off Seinfeld, including Coupling, Seinfeld itself now seems unfunny/dated to you. TV Tropes (for what it's worth) has a term for this, it's called 'Seinfeld is Unfunny'.
@MrLunitunz Actually I am an American. And the British version of Coupling certainly is better than the remade American version because there are certain things in British comedy that can't be translated into this culture.
I'll admit, we have made some good comedies, and your preference is your preference. I certainly agree that there are plenty of things unique to the two cultures that cannot be transferred over in a 'remake', for example the geniuses in network television want to do an American remake of 'Only Fools and Horses', a comedy show that is and always will be fundamentally British.
Seinfeld is fundamentally American, even if people might consider it to be a critique of American culture, and people (network execs mainly), in its earlier years, considered Seinfeld to be too 'New York' and too 'Jewish'. I don't see it like that, but I can understand how some people might view it that way, and this view impacts on accessibility. I'm not sure if that's how you see it, but people do.
Hello fellow connoisseurs of animated comedy! We have a brand new full-length animated pilot of Michael, Jordan and Pals up on our main page! Give it a look and let us know what you think!
@SH1 bobby from king of the hill is someone else. But the actress, whose name is Christine Kavanaugh, did do Babe, Chuckie from Rugrats, Oblina from Aaah real Monsters and Dexter from Dexter's Laboratory.
@Illumirage They actually were in QUITE the place to do so. Both Brad Bird AND Judd Apatow worked on the show in a great capacity. What're they doing now? Gigantic box office bucks. What's Seinfeld doing now? Oh yeah... THE MARRIAGE REF. That's still on the air, right? Right?
Seinfeld was a guest host on that like one time. And apparently you're unfamiliar with Curb Your Enthusiasm.
But at the end of the day, Jerry doesn't have to do anything. He makes tens of millions annually on Seinfeld reruns alone. Yes, you read that correctly.
Can't remember the last time I saw a critic rerun.
Brad Birds biggest achievement was Ratatouille, don't talk him up.
Apatow made a couple good movies. But c'mon, Don't Mess with the Zohan, Get him to the greek? Ugh...
@Illumirage Dude, "THE INCREDIBLES" and "IRON GIANT" were Brad Bird's biggest achievements, but I guess you live under a rock or soemthing. Also, Larry David was responsible for Curb Your Enthusiasm as well as most of what was good about Seinfeld. This hit Jerry's comedy RIGHT on the head: it's retarded 90s observation humor at its most banal.
Not to mention that Seinfeld CREATED "The Marriage Ref..." Pretty big fucking sin.
Both were quite forgettable. Even for childrens movies, which apparently you're pretty into.
Jerry, Julia, Michael and Jason were regulars on the latest season of Curb. You're selling his work short, he's been rated at number #2, right after Carlin, as the greatest comedians of all time.
Apatow and Bird don't hold a candle to his excellence.
@Illumirage Right... The Incredibles and Iron Giant... FORGETTABLE. Right, right. Clearly you're a man of excellent taste. Thanks for correcting me, which is so clearly what I needed. I don't know how I could've been wrong for THIS long. Now that I think of it, Seinfeld IS hilarious, his humor is pointless or contrived at all. Really, THANKS for being such a standup guy and helping me out here. I mean, I can't believe I thought airline jokes WEREN"T funny!
Yes they're very forgettable. Maybe not for a person like yourself who refuses to grow up, and from the looks of it, is obsessed w/ cinema and television developed for children. You're in no position to be ridiculing others 'taste' buddy.
Yeah, sum up a guys entire career w/ one of his jokes. Classy.
Judging by your channel, and interest in mind-numbing, low brow humor, much of Seinfeld's material probably flies right over your head w/o you even knowing it...
@Illumirage Oh cool, you're still giving me advice on how to have good taste. Thanks, I really appreciate you going out of your way to help me. You know what, you're a super GREAT person, and not at all a fatuous cocksucker. I'm ready to leave my wife for you RIGHT this instant. Can I get your number?
@Illumirage Leaving the idiot who claims Jerry Seinfeld is washed up aside, The Critic had the right to do it. That was The Critic's thing. For a work to be parodied in such a way doesn't indicate that the original work is in any way poor, just indicates that the work has become ingrained in popular culture. The people who write the Critic aren't claiming that Seinfeld is crap, they're just putting that trivial slant on it, llooking at it from another angle.
@thepantstent Season 8 and 9 are the most critically acclaimed. Particularly the stretch in Season 8 from episode 4 to 17 are the best. David doesn't write a single episode in either season besides the finale which was universally panned. I would argue Spike Ferensten and Alec Berg wrote better for the show than Larry David.
@gd129 For me it doesn't get better than season 3, but that's my opinion. I'm thinking the other guy maybe feels the same way, and has a favorite season of his own
The reason television hasn't changed much is because of all the good, well-written shows that were actually worth watching.
Think about it: These few good shows all brought something new to television. So, the bad writers decide to leech off all the original material from the good writers. And we end up with a plethora of recycled bits all over the media. And, being the lazy and untalented people they are, figure "Why fix what ain't broke?"
Even though The Critic was on 15 years ago, alot of what they show on it still seems pretty current. Which is a testament of how little media has changed.
Go back and watch old episodes of Mystery Science Theater. In spite of the show being 20 years old, lots of the "topical" jokes in that show are still relevant.
@allaroundfilms no its a testament to the staying power of the materiel satirized then. seinfeld has become culturally ubiquitous. you will never see a smart cartoon poking fun at 2 and a half men, because who fucking cares?
The critic cant make fun of seinfeld, seinfeld is much better and more succesful than the critic although the critic is great too,Seinfeld is much better.
@AllenbysEyes Well, you can't really make fun of south park... an attempt would just make whatever show that tried to make fun of it, make fun of itself. (due to the half assed attempt)
reason being that no show is so over the top satire and politically incorrect as south park.
Never really understood Seinfeld. Almost seems like a New Yorker's Version of Jerry Springer. In other words people just being mean to each other.
