Wow, now that is some serious metal. That would make you someone some very good cash. Nice ideas on using some of that stuff for shelter. Could make one sturdy shelter with it, and a wood stove to boot.
Its good to be able to look at a pile of junk like thisn and see its survival potential, but it should be noted that finding a pile of junk like this or even containing alot of the things here is EXTREMELY unlikely if youre lost to a point where youre thinking of a semi permanent shelter or arrowheads. piles like this are found on private land or off side a back dirt road. backcountry youll generally find bottles cans and rope/string, id be really surprised to find a lawnmower though. just sayin
You could take the wheels off the mower, make a pull-cart out of the wheels and some of that plywood you found. If you dig deep enuff most of those ol' farm dumps have a battered coffee pot or teakettle in them...should also be some glass jars or bottles. I LOVE digging in old homestead dumps, although ya gotta watch for snakes and other critters in the summer. Nice Vid, enjoyed it.
Man Oh Man Critter, You could stan up all those drums for walls and put the garage doors on top for a roof pull over the wood burner and You'd be set Brother You could prolly use some of that wire bundles and make a cool spring mattres ot lay on
you'd be hard pressed to find so much junk in central to northern Canada outside of city centers. I've been through places where there is nothing but nature for days of hiking up here.try it some time
This is a valuable video. The focus is primarily on building a shelter. If you have a home with four walls a roof and central heating, you wont be trying to create a shelter out of the sorts of materials you are finding in the woods. What you are suggesting is going to be most useful when you are on the move.
And when you are on the move, you will probably be camping on someone elses property—read that to mean private home, corporate, state or federal. Thats a problem.
The kind of shelter you build when you are in a self reliant situation will depend upon how long you can stay in a given area. If you are on a long range scout, the clock starts just as soon as you start to construct a shelter.
Is it realistic to start to build anything substantial? How long will it be before you encounter countervailing forces—land owners, security personal, park rangers, police, or disreputable people?
i think that was the point. i dont think survival is a form of camping though. its a process. you have a goal (to survive) and you preform actions to meet that goal using available resources (whatever they may be). i know if i need to flee, i will use whatever the grace of god grants me and will not look at any resources with a contemptous eye, even if it is trash.
yes i know this but you dont find everyday stuff to build a fortess i thought this vid was using very small junk you find and make something useful out of it. i mean you dont find everyday a ready made metal shelter
hay I got a little tip for you. Ok them chainsaws if they still have the chains on them n r not too rusty you might be able to take the chains of and use them like a wire saw if you make them some handles. Maybe using some of that wire and a thick branch. have fun
I dig it! My mind was goin 1000mph thinking of all that stuff. I wouldn't call it trash tho.... its still useable in some matter. Id hope to find a discovery like that if i were in a survival suitation.
I wouldn't repower the jap car, id figure out how to make that push mower a RIDER!
Great vid, KEEP THEM COMING, WE NEED TO FILL OURS HEADS WITH KNOWLEDGE!
while flipping thru the pages of my farmers almanac, I came across an article titled "Wait! Don't throw it away!" in there it mentions that an old shower curtain can be used as a ground cloth for your camping needs... Just thought I'd share!
i would really like you to make like a survival camp out of all of that junk that would be realy cool it could be like a perminater or semi permanate camp
The steel drums can be used as a root cellar. Digging the hole might be a pain w/o a shovel. Burry the drum in a verticle position and make a cover for it.
Is it wrong of me to say one of my most cherrished childhood memories was going on treasure hunts at the city dump? Damn I brought home some sweet s.w.a.g...
probably the biggest skill in survival is innovation,,that is a gold mine you found there mate,,it all has so many uses,yo could build a fortified base camp with all that wire.
I used to have a metal detector for finding treasure. Trouble was, there was an endless amount of digging. It's best to have a dumb 10 year old with you who thinks it is fun to do a lot digging. Ha!
It wouldn't take a whole lot of work to turn that feed tank into a little hunters/hobo shack in a hurry, you've even got a stove for it and enough wood to make a bench to sit or sleep on
Build a ground forge. Use the Wood stove as an anvil (it looks to have plenty of solid still in it), and reshape some of the steel into whatever tools you fancy. This does assume you have a good rock to use as a hammer though.
Use the Plastic waste to make very thick black, visible smoke, to attract rescue.
I would locate some spools of rice bags use that wire to build a solid bomb shelter safe from tornado bullets. Use the chain saw chains to make some pocket saws. The barrels join them to make the best stove you have ever owned that is able to burn logs 3 ft long. Grain tank can be surrounded with wire then add concrete another strong bunker cut a door in it first and you would have a tornado proof shelter. That looks like someones old homestead.
ok...I have an idea...we are going to use the grage door panels to make a raft...the drums will be the flotation...the lawnmower motor will provide motivation for it....and we can use the wood stove to heat some fat lighter, and render kerosene. ...I know it will take a good pile of wood...but you already have some 2x4's, and 3 chainsaws. lol Great Job Critr'
Reminded me of my Fathers garage, That man was the best practical engineer that I've ever known. If he didn't have the $ for what he wanted, he made it in the garage.
With all that wire and the standing trees around you, you could fashion a crude fenced enclosure to act as a first line of defence against dangerous predatory animals.
Are you shure you didn't die and go to patfinder heaven ?? Lol :) hey I have a great use for the chain saw . Of it won't run you can take off the chain and attach some paracord with a loop on both ends then you have a good saw that can roll up and store in your pack :)
I am glad you made this video. I have been thinking along those same lines.
I see lots of oportunities in left over materials. I go to job sites and do cleanup for the companies when available. It is the oportunity to gather materials and many times get wire steel insulation, etc. All of it is good to store for further use.
Definetly not a new site to me, they are hundreds of places like this in MN, nearly everywhere out here there is a small patch of trees with some farmers scraps piled up.
those drums would make a nice way to store caches of wood and other supplies in survival "waystations". the wire could be used to weave grasses and such for shelter floor coverings. and if you want to have windows in your garage door shelter, the wire and 2x4's could be shutters! need to cross a river? wire and 2x4's can make a bridge.... climbing trees or cliffs...wire and 2x4's can make a ladder.... need a bath? barrels full of water set next to a camp fire to heat up...hot tub!
Hey with some modifications, that giant steel tank would be the perfect permanent shelter! You could easily put a stove in there. No point in buying a fancy home. Beware of cabin fever in the winter!
heck i dont see how you could say you would be in a survivial or self relinace sit. you have everything you need. thats just living there. Great vid Critt'r
the chainsaws turning power can be used to make a belt driven motor maybe even a alternate motor to a generator if needed. the blades on the lawn mower can be made into a pair of machetes
Well if you were near a river or lake you could make a small powered raft using the barrels and either the chain saw motors or the lawn mower to get to the other side.
With all of the materials available to make an extended stay shelter, I would suggest using some of that wire (it also looked like there was some fence in that pile) to fashion a livestock pen. When you stay for a long time, its always good to have a readily availabe, long-term food supply.
