  • Why does the keyboard have keys witth the windws icon? I mean it's built to run Linux. Why do they brand it with Windows then?

  • you can get windows xp with it if you want its just this was a prototype so only had linux. the higher memory ones have xp built in.

  • Umm heyyyy NO

  • it's worth buyng the asus eee pc 901, because its is one of the best eee pc's out there (12/20gb ssd, 1 gb ram, inter atom processor 1.6 GHz, 4-7 hrs battery life, 8.9" screen and 1.1kg of weight(i think) )

    ps thx 4 the answer

  • yep

  • yep what?

yes its like xp or yes its different?

  • just like xp

  • Are you honestly that stupid? It's just like any other OS!

  • its more customisable than xp is mate. do a little research into the operating system and you'll see. you can even have something called compiz fusion on it (i have it) which is visually a fest for the eyes. search for it on here and you'll see what i mean; im using it right now :-)

  • Without doubts, this Laptop is a revolution in Mobile computers, the adoption of SSD for replacing loudy hard disks is great. This laptop very fast using a single Core processor, it's extremely silent and ultra portable. Most vendors like Toshiba, Sony and Apple will have to make a clone of the Asus Eee PC to have a similar market in the sub-note books. Their problem is they don't have the technology ASUS has, to make such an excelent product with a reasonable price. Only $299.00!!!

  • its too bad they decided to sell them for $300

  • Stupid choice on OS... Ubuntu is easier to use imo... the tabs seem like a stupid idea, especially if people are used to Windows...

  • 2 Gb is plenty for class and its super light, Id like one just so i can use it for notes and other small things, 512 ram and 4-8 hd space (flash) means smaller energy consumption and .8 kg means super light, its acutally really good for what its designed for. UMPC.

  • I want one for uni (But not even in 6th form lol.) Thats like 2 and a half years lol. Hopefully they will be like £50 by then :P

  • ohh ! i look forward to it will come to denmark !

  • Hey, can i download Microsoft street with GPS ? So i can use it for travel in Canada and USA. I hope to hear you asap. Thanks.

  • ASUS FTW!

  • can u put vista on it

  • Thank god for you can't!

  • why the hell did i get 2 BAD COMMENTS just for askin if u can put vista on it

  • u can put vista on it

  • In principle you can (it's an x86 processor), but you won't like it.

  • who would put the worst operating system ever on this notebook?

  • makes it cheap, the whole point

  • IT HAS 2 GB OF HARD DRIVE SPACE

    ...NO.

  • there are different models from 2GB to 8GB flash drive

  • I'd buy one. It'd be a great alternative device for when I don't feel like packing my hueg gaming laptop around for simple office work.

  • I can't wait for mine!!! Finally got a confirmation e-mail that it's on its way. It's March already and I ordered it in January. Was on a boat from Taipei... $499 for the 8GB.

Now I'm almost Windows free, hee hee hee!

  • how do you insta yahoo messenger in Asus Eee PC???and pls give me the easy steps of doing it...i dont know anything about linux...

  • 1. step:

don't ask for linux help on youtube ^^

  • Use Pidgin, it supports Yahoo, MSN, Jabber, Gtalk and pretty much everything you can throw at it.

  • thanks!

  • hey do I have internet connection for free or I have to pay something ??

  • Do you ever buy a mobile phone and get your network service free?.....no.

  • I can't wait for this to be released in Norway. Built in Microphone, webcam and Skype make it an excellent communication device. Notetaking, websurfing and minor games, watch a movie from an USB, small and lightweigth. Fantastic piece of hardware. Hopefully they will sell the one's with Linux, so the price can stay low.

  • I like this EEE-PC !

  • can u watch dvd's on this

  • You have to hook up an external drive.

  • NOT $199.

  • cok guzel bir laptop kucuk ve gayette ucuz

  • if it comes with linux why do they put a windows button on the keyboard_!?

  • because it's the 'super' key in linux.

  • It's Windows XP compatible. You can install it if you want to.

  • So yeah, these are supposed to be really moddable. I think when I get one, I'm going to get a 4G Surf and upgrade to compare to or surpass the 8G model. [If you change to XP or a diff. Linux, you can actually get 2GB ram instead of the 1 GB Xandros maximum]

  • 4.- Transfer the slimed XP to USB by unzip usb_prep8.zip program to your USB along with the PeToUsb

5.- Go to BIOS setup utility of yous EeePC and change the Boot Device Priority to USB as your 1st Boot Device

6.- Choose "1. TXT Mode Setup Windows XP" and follow the instructions

    Happy Installing!

  • do you think it can get a virus from web?

  • how can u install windows xp on it if it doesn't have a cd drive?

  • yes you can

  • You use an USB external CD drive

  • You need to do the following:-

1.- An original XP and a USB

2.- Trim the XP by using nLite v1.4.1, make it as slim as possible

3.- You also need to download two files named PeToUSB 3.0.0.7 and Bootsect.exe

  • i got a macbook lol

  • i hate macs lol

  • I bought mine black, 4 gb with webcam 399$ (canadian)

  • how did u get that that cheap?

  • Canada computers at kenedy, i will send you a message where i got it

  • it is extremely easy to install xp on one of these bad boys, xp drivers are included, all u need is a handy copy of xp and ur golden

  • its cool i wanna buy it next time if i can....

  • DAMN if only this thing came shipped with XP, I LOVEE the look of it, but that OS is nasty.

  • That OS is much much better than Windows for a limited system like this. It comes with a nice set of apps and work really well. It's like a Mac but easier actually.

Myself I'm replacing Xandros with Ubuntu or Fedora perhaps because Xandros sold out to Microsoft and their hollow lies.

  • Do you know if ubuntu works on this? that would be great!

  • It works, but it's not too fast though, the 900mhz processor is underclocked to 630mhz I think.

  • Is xandros pretty good than?

  • Yes, it is special built for the EEE. So it will be faster.

  • It should comealong with Ubuntu!

  • I think there is a specially built version of Ubuntu made for it too (again, I think).

  • Would be nice to have a Eee PC with the same power as a Q core and 2 dual 8800. this is more like mobile excel on the road.

  • ¿donde se compra?

  • The Community is Waiting HUNGRY at the Eee PC ... It's the .... it's really a good thing to bring this on the Market! Eee will get a reall huge income for Asus!

  • EHM sorry .. the COMMUNITY in Switzerland!!

  • I just bought one last week. Immediately upgraded the RAM to 2Gb ($50 at MicroCenter) Loaded XP and turned off the Swap File. Bought an additional 4gb SD card and got a 8gb flash drive. Thing is great for taking with you to leach on to public networks and do some P2P or something you dont want to do from your own IP. Plays movies and MP3's well too. For $399 you really cant go wrong.

  • couldnt you get an ibook g3 for a bit cheaper and have it do the samethings?

which do you recommend g3 or eee?

  • i want the 1001 model is it out yet or is that due next Christmas?

i never thought id see the day cds became obsolete

  • i hope the future it will have built in 8.9" touch screen, blue tooth, 4hr battery... for under $570

  • Does anyone have one? I am considering getting one for my best friend for her birthday. I dont want to get her a crapy computer if it isnt worth it....but i heard a lot of good things...anyways if anyone can help out let me know:)

  • i might have thought about buying it when it was $199 but they changed it to almost $400 which you might aswell just save another $100 and buy a normal computer

  • Its not a regular computer its a UMPC that doesnt cost $1000+. Save $100 over this and get a crap computer thats slow and huge. Its not intended to compete against XPS's and Thinkpads its intended to be a mobile word proc and web surfing device

  • the reportor says "it runs linux instead of linux", well it's kinda right, but linux is a kernel, not an OS

  • He said "Linux instead windows"

This why Linux is known as the base name, just like Windows is the base name.

It uses Xandros (Linux) instead of XP (Windows)

    But it uses xp also.

Someone installed the horrible Vista inside!!

There's no limit to the nonsense

  • So does the solid state memory in this thing wear out? I mean I understand standard SSD will get bad sectors after 100,000 writes, which wouldn't take that long if there's a swap partition.

  • huiii

  • will the webcam work with anything that would be on the MSN messenger network?

  • Sure, you can use amsn with the webcam. Works ok.

  • Right out of the box.

  • Momy pleeeeease give me one!

  • Yes I know that verse very well myself being a Christian, so what are you trying to say?

  • What I'm trying to say is that Jesus would have used Linux :-)

  • As a Christian and also a computer technician I'd suggest you keep your comments within a field you actually know something about. Like installing Norton AntiVirus 2008 on your already resource guzzling Vista system. That's about the level of competence you demonstrate in your comments.

  • but does it make toast?

  • Great Linux!

  • @ rukia

yes u can pu xp on, or other linux distributions, i'd stick with upuntu with compiz

  • ubuntu

  • I think I am going to buy one but can I put Windows on it and take off Linux?

  • why would ou want to do that? Think about it, with linux, you won't have to worry about anti-virus, useless programs running at start up and so many other issues... while you can put windows in it, I would recommend you give linux a chance before you change it

  • I tried linux. I DON'T like it. Windows is easier and better, more software, support, and programs that I like. All linux can do is flip like a box and be a Windows wantabe and it can't even run simple windows programs. I prefer Windows over Linux because Linux, in my opinion is crap and for people to cheap to buy a REAL OS.

  • Windows....REAL OS?

    Unix...Linux...not real OS?

    Then:

A car with an auto transmission and your lovely dolls inside is an automobile?

F-1 racing car with manual transmission and no lovely dolls is not REAL AUTOMOBILE?

"it can't even run simple windows programs"

Then, did you try running a simple Linux in Windows?

Putting a simple back mirror from your car to a jet, you know the result, right?

And do you know how MS Windows came from?

  • HEY, calm down.. I use ubuntu ... but I think people like RukiaPANIC can't understand LINUX and don't need to understand what THE REAL OS IS... normal people feel more comfortable with using WINDOWS and that's the reason why MS IS MONOPOLY

  • Windows...REAL OS? Linux..crap...not real OS?

A car with an auto transmission and your lovely dolls inside is a car?

A F-1 racing car with manual transmission and no lovely dolls is "carp" and is not a REAL CAR?

"it can't even run simple windows programs"

Putting a simple back mirror from your car to a jet...you know the result, right?

Eee PC is cheap as it runs Linux, you knew it.

If you want Windows, why not buy a normal laptop?

You want it cheap, but you want it has all things you want?

  • I already have two laptops. One with Windows Vista and one with XP. I was thinking about getting one of these because of the size and mobility. But I want linux off. But it doesn't matter anymore. I did some research and found out that they released one with XP already preinstalled, I will be ordering it this weekend when I get paid. :)

  • Ah now that explains everything, a Vista noob. You're one of these idiots who doesn't deserve a better operating system.

  • Your comment is just plain stupid and ignorant.

  • Here's a reality check for you: Lets say you apply for a job where I work (yes its in IT) and you express the moronic and ill informed views you have expressed here. Here's what happens: 1. You don't get the job. 2. Your Resume goes in the trash. That's reality.

  • you obviously haven't seen or used linux.

a copy of ubuntu running with a dope theme and advanced compiz effects puts windows to shame and is way more usable, linux boxes will do anything a windows box does only difference the linux box will do it faster, prettier and for 0 dollars.

  • Ah if only manufacturer's would offer more information about their hardware so I could get some decent Linux drivers for my graphics card. Then I'd actually be able to use Compiz...

  • If you don't like it (or rather didn't like the particular distro you tried, which is far more likely to be the case) then don't use it. And don't buy an Eee either because you certainly wont improve it by putting Windows on it. As for the rest of your comments about Linux, you are a completely clueless, though highly opinionated, ignoramus.

  • ...because an eee pc without xp is like a puppy without bricks tied to it's head.

    ... bricks are good.

  • I don't know why, but I just NEED one of these.

  • yea me 2, and i have a macbook:S thats waay better, but i 'need' this too

  • unfortunately it's because Windows is developing a version of XP for this and other flash based laptops. I feel your pain.

  • xcept x61 costs 5times eee pc costs.

    dumb ass

  • Great review there

  • my mom and my sister use one in highschool for notetaking. PDAs are not allowed as most people pair them with bluetooth and have a tendancy to go online/txt people during class.

in my opinion as am owner i tell you its the reverse. also the tabbed interface is quite usefull for begginers to linux........ like my sister. because if she breaks it she comes to me for help =)

  • I'm waiting for the prices to come down a little, and the specs to go up, as they surely will. But putting this down because it isn't a laptop or a PDA really misses the point. A standard laptop or PDA is worthless when you want to do some unobtrusive writing/browsing wherever you find yourself. You can't write with a PDA, and a laptop is too heavy and slow-booting. This is a writer's dream.

I'm amazed it took the industry so long to figure out the need for this kind of device.

  • I like the fact that it uses a solid-state drive and thus less power and that it's built with Linux.

I like to say that it's not intended to do any super-laborious tasks. It's a pick-up-and-go subnotebook. Comparing it to stuff like the Macbook series is akin to comparing apples and oranges.

  • Can tell me anyone what video is integrated on it .I means how many Mb video have.

  • i thinks you can look on google and easily find it for yourself its shared video memmory with the system RAM

  • ill stick with my money

  • well too bad. It's a nice subnotebook. It's not intended to do 3d graphics editing or high performance gameing.

  • Man this is a cool notebook!

  • does it have a disk drive

  • nope

  • No, but you can use external HDD or DVD.

    I love it :-).

  • it uses a internal flash drive. A ssd instead of an Hdd

  • oh srry i thought you ment hard drive but still no

  • Isn't that ironic? It has a Linux operating system but it still has the windows key on the keyboard lol...

  • It's not a windows key, it's a "Home" key.

  • In the final version , it's a "Home" key

  • I like where this machine is heading but if the screen resolution is only 800x480 and the internal flash drive is only 4Gigs then they really need to get the price point back down to at least $200. Otherwise I'd encourage people to just look for a refurbished laptop for cheap mobile computing and web surfing.

Hopefully the price will drop as production ramps up.

  • the point is that it weights only 920 gram and very tiny which makes the device extremely portable. A refurbished laptop won't be able to match the competitive advantage.

  • If that were the entire point then they would add a bigger hard drive and a higher resolution screen but it's not. The cheap price is part of their marketing as well so yeah it's super compact but on value alone it's not such a fantastic deal. Like I said though I like the direction they're taking with this thing.

  • For the price you can get an 120gb external hdd and install xp there. It's awesome.
