help! i have the eee pc 701 but it won't boot :( even if I remove the battery and plug in the a/c. It looks dead, it just doesn't boot, how do i fix it?
Hello. do you have any idea how to stop the asus eee pc 701 from crashing at the start up. I got mine and it was working fine, then i tried to restore factory settings and now it always crashes at the start up, from flickering from one screen to another and back and forth. Any idea?
I just got a 701 and this thing is GREAT! the operating system(LINUX)is very user friendly and the internal web cam & wi-fi are awesome, not to mention the price! I highly recommend this its excellent,I also purchased an 8GB card to increase capacity as well...
as a student in london, this is so good for typing in lectures and just carrying around with you. i don't see what else you could need on the move. ive just ordered one and used my friends quite alot, it's brilliant for what it is. don't expect a full pc, that' not the point!
it's worth buyng the asus eee pc 901, because its is one of the best eee pc's out there (12/20gb ssd, 1 gb ram, inter atom processor 1.6 GHz, 4-7 hrs battery life, 8.9" screen and 1.1kg of weight(i think) )
its more customisable than xp is mate. do a little research into the operating system and you'll see. you can even have something called compiz fusion on it (i have it) which is visually a fest for the eyes. search for it on here and you'll see what i mean; im using it right now :-)
Without doubts, this Laptop is a revolution in Mobile computers, the adoption of SSD for replacing loudy hard disks is great. This laptop very fast using a single Core processor, it's extremely silent and ultra portable. Most vendors like Toshiba, Sony and Apple will have to make a clone of the Asus Eee PC to have a similar market in the sub-note books. Their problem is they don't have the technology ASUS has, to make such an excelent product with a reasonable price. Only $299.00!!!
2 Gb is plenty for class and its super light, Id like one just so i can use it for notes and other small things, 512 ram and 4-8 hd space (flash) means smaller energy consumption and .8 kg means super light, its acutally really good for what its designed for. UMPC.
I can't wait for mine!!! Finally got a confirmation e-mail that it's on its way. It's March already and I ordered it in January. Was on a boat from Taipei... $499 for the 8GB.
I can't wait for this to be released in Norway. Built in Microphone, webcam and Skype make it an excellent communication device. Notetaking, websurfing and minor games, watch a movie from an USB, small and lightweigth. Fantastic piece of hardware. Hopefully they will sell the one's with Linux, so the price can stay low.
So yeah, these are supposed to be really moddable. I think when I get one, I'm going to get a 4G Surf and upgrade to compare to or surpass the 8G model. [If you change to XP or a diff. Linux, you can actually get 2GB ram instead of the 1 GB Xandros maximum]
That OS is much much better than Windows for a limited system like this. It comes with a nice set of apps and work really well. It's like a Mac but easier actually.
Myself I'm replacing Xandros with Ubuntu or Fedora perhaps because Xandros sold out to Microsoft and their hollow lies.
The Community is Waiting HUNGRY at the Eee PC ... It's the .... it's really a good thing to bring this on the Market! Eee will get a reall huge income for Asus!
I just bought one last week. Immediately upgraded the RAM to 2Gb ($50 at MicroCenter) Loaded XP and turned off the Swap File. Bought an additional 4gb SD card and got a 8gb flash drive. Thing is great for taking with you to leach on to public networks and do some P2P or something you dont want to do from your own IP. Plays movies and MP3's well too. For $399 you really cant go wrong.
Does anyone have one? I am considering getting one for my best friend for her birthday. I dont want to get her a crapy computer if it isnt worth it....but i heard a lot of good things...anyways if anyone can help out let me know:)
i might have thought about buying it when it was $199 but they changed it to almost $400 which you might aswell just save another $100 and buy a normal computer
Its not a regular computer its a UMPC that doesnt cost $1000+. Save $100 over this and get a crap computer thats slow and huge. Its not intended to compete against XPS's and Thinkpads its intended to be a mobile word proc and web surfing device
So does the solid state memory in this thing wear out? I mean I understand standard SSD will get bad sectors after 100,000 writes, which wouldn't take that long if there's a swap partition.

I did some research and found out that they released one with XP already preinstalled, I will be ordering it this weekend when I get paid. :)

No he is an "idiot" who can AFFORD a real operating system. I dont see why linux fans are so crazy about linux, sure there r no viruses, but i dont have an anti virus and have not gotten a virus in years, and linux cant do SHIT compared to windows. the interface SUCKS, the included programs SUCK, windows is just plain better. Im sure there is a reason that windows is a million more times popular than linux os.
Here's a reality check for you: Lets say you apply for a job where I work (yes its in IT) and you express the moronic and ill informed views you have expressed here. Here's what happens: 1. You don't get the job. 2. Your Resume goes in the trash. That's reality.
a copy of ubuntu running with a dope theme and advanced compiz effects puts windows to shame and is way more usable, linux boxes will do anything a windows box does only difference the linux box will do it faster, prettier and for 0 dollars.
Ah if only manufacturer's would offer more information about their hardware so I could get some decent Linux drivers for my graphics card. Then I'd actually be able to use Compiz...
If you don't like it (or rather didn't like the particular distro you tried, which is far more likely to be the case) then don't use it. And don't buy an Eee either because you certainly wont improve it by putting Windows on it. As for the rest of your comments about Linux, you are a completely clueless, though highly opinionated, ignoramus.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yes you can, ignore thoes stupid linux fanboys. It can handle xp just fine, i have one and it has xp on the flash and use an external 2.5 drive for main storage.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the specs are really low should be cheaper thats like a wii or gaming type pc like internet wise and like email wise but its just not ment for anything alse flash memory is really low mem for a cpu im just wondering how long it would take for the pc to need aanother hd but i think its a prett good product for kids like from ages 5-7 or to be used later on in schools its in my opinion just a pda and weaker thank you
my mom and my sister use one in highschool for notetaking. PDAs are not allowed as most people pair them with bluetooth and have a tendancy to go online/txt people during class.
in my opinion as am owner i tell you its the reverse. also the tabbed interface is quite usefull for begginers to linux........ like my sister. because if she breaks it she comes to me for help =)
I'm waiting for the prices to come down a little, and the specs to go up, as they surely will. But putting this down because it isn't a laptop or a PDA really misses the point. A standard laptop or PDA is worthless when you want to do some unobtrusive writing/browsing wherever you find yourself. You can't write with a PDA, and a laptop is too heavy and slow-booting. This is a writer's dream.
I'm amazed it took the industry so long to figure out the need for this kind of device.
I like the fact that it uses a solid-state drive and thus less power and that it's built with Linux.
I like to say that it's not intended to do any super-laborious tasks. It's a pick-up-and-go subnotebook. Comparing it to stuff like the Macbook series is akin to comparing apples and oranges.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
it cost 400$, read it on the cNet review... for that kind of money i could buy a very powerful pda with all the gadgets... and for 500$ you could buy a full laptop with a 14 or 15 inch monitor and dvd burner
I like where this machine is heading but if the screen resolution is only 800x480 and the internal flash drive is only 4Gigs then they really need to get the price point back down to at least $200. Otherwise I'd encourage people to just look for a refurbished laptop for cheap mobile computing and web surfing.
Hopefully the price will drop as production ramps up.
the point is that it weights only 920 gram and very tiny which makes the device extremely portable. A refurbished laptop won't be able to match the competitive advantage.
If that were the entire point then they would add a bigger hard drive and a higher resolution screen but it's not. The cheap price is part of their marketing as well so yeah it's super compact but on value alone it's not such a fantastic deal. Like I said though I like the direction they're taking with this thing.

I did some research and found out that they released one with XP already preinstalled, I will be ordering it this weekend when I get paid. :)

Ah now that explains everything, a Vista noob. You're one of these idiots who doesn't deserve a better operating system.

Lam1ngton 4 years ago 3
you obviously haven't seen or used linux.
a copy of ubuntu running with a dope theme and advanced compiz effects puts windows to shame and is way more usable, linux boxes will do anything a windows box does only difference the linux box will do it faster, prettier and for 0 dollars.
DocSloth 4 years ago 4
Ah if only manufacturer's would offer more information about their hardware so I could get some decent Linux drivers for my graphics card. Then I'd actually be able to use Compiz...
fyorl 4 years ago
If you don't like it (or rather didn't like the particular distro you tried, which is far more likely to be the case) then don't use it. And don't buy an Eee either because you certainly wont improve it by putting Windows on it. As for the rest of your comments about Linux, you are a completely clueless, though highly opinionated, ignoramus.

Yes you can, ignore thoes stupid linux fanboys. It can handle xp just fine, i have one and it has xp on the flash and use an external 2.5 drive for main storage.

...because an eee pc without xp is like a puppy without bricks tied to it's head.
... bricks are good.

the specs are really low should be cheaper thats like a wii or gaming type pc like internet wise and like email wise but its just not ment for anything alse flash memory is really low mem for a cpu im just wondering how long it would take for the pc to need aanother hd but i think its a prett good product for kids like from ages 5-7 or to be used later on in schools its in my opinion just a pda and weaker thank you

my mom and my sister use one in highschool for notetaking.

Comparing it to stuff like the Macbook series is akin to comparing apples and oranges.

it cost 400$, read it on the cNet review... for that kind of money i could buy a very powerful pda with all the gadgets... and for 500$ you could buy a full laptop with a 14 or 15 inch monitor and dvd burner

well too bad. It's a nice subnotebook. It's not intended to do 3d graphics editing or high performance gameing.

Isn't that ironic? It has a Linux operating system but it still has the windows key on the keyboard lol...

It's not a windows key, it's a "Home" key.
lekid911 4 years ago
In the final version , it's a "Home" key
lekid911 4 years ago 2
I like where this machine is heading but if the screen resolution is only 800x480 and the internal flash drive is only 4Gigs then they really need to get the price point back down to at least $200. Otherwise I'd encourage people to just look for a refurbished laptop for cheap mobile computing and web surfing.
Hopefully the price will drop as production ramps up.
Strideo1 4 years ago 3
the point is that it weights only 920 gram and very tiny which makes the device extremely portable. A refurbished laptop won't be able to match the competitive advantage.
youbetyou 4 years ago
If that were the entire point then they would add a bigger hard drive and a higher resolution screen but it's not. The cheap price is part of their marketing as well so yeah it's super compact but on value alone it's not such a fantastic deal. Like I said though I like the direction they're taking with this thing.
Strideo1 4 years ago
For the price you can get an 120gb external hdd and install xp there. It's awesome.
