  • reminds me of captain beefheart a little... really amazing session wish i was there

  • Comment removed

  • well the three of them are all huge captain beefheart fans, where the first jam comes from, and in general they all do equally complex things. omar just wears his prog on his sleeves with tmv. i'm pretty sure john sits in his room transcribing aphex twin songs all day, anyhow.

  • hey guys, i bet omar wrote almost everything in these jams.

flea and john dont usually play such complex things

  • It's frustrating seeing these videos and seeing people expecting Televators pt. 2 when they watch. The organic interaction between the three instruments is quite beautiful.

  • Frank Zappa would be proud of this.

  • Is it really Maurice Moss playing the guitar with Flea? Incredible!

  • The melody that starts at 6:37 sounds like an spanish song because of the rhythim and melody although they're using electric guitars and not spanish.

  • おもしろ

  • flea and john are amazing but the guy on the guitar is terrible.. sorry.

  • @Nuttbuster don't sorry man, it's your opinion and is valid.

  • @Nuttbuster Omar is a god. Frusciante is better but go listen to Cygnus vismund Cygnus by The Mars Volta and tell me otherwise

  • @Nuttbuster... You're kidding, right? Omar is quite simply the most talented person in that room, hands down...

  • @gcard79 Omar's guitar playing is probably the worst ive ever heard in my entire life of playing guitar, hands down.

  • 6:15

    Magical, sacred and gifted Fingers!

  • This whole thing sucks big time...

  • @allexcosta HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT????

  • omar is my idol he plays like an E.T.

  • omar sounds like shit

  • Omar definitely has played better things. The early ehh... 'solo'? after the break in this is pretty crappy I gotta say. I'm a huge fan of TMV but sometimes Omar really does just throw it out the window, it would have probably sounded a bit better if he didn't do a lot of separate, odd sounding bits and could string them together, but it really did sound like one of those shitty "(band name) SHREDS" spoof videos. Especially with the flurry of bass in the background.

  • Aun no entiendo cómo Flea puede tocar de esa manera sin cansarse... definitivamente notables

  • 6:01 That's when the magic starts!!! Simply beautiful...

  • @rcfc00 The magic never stoppped

  • @rcfc00 no dude.... magic start at 0:00

  • I love how a bunch of no talented ass clowns are telling Omar how to play guitar .. like The Mars Volta don't sell out arenas or anything... Get your own band and do something you fucking tools!!!!

  • Uhmm, is this a joke a la smooth jazz version of Enter Sandman? This sounds like bunch of 3 graders...

  • lefty should learn some scales :d

  • 16 People don´t know anything about music.

  • @Cococlips no, 16 people just dont like it when musicians just play nonsense and call it music. Flea and Frusciante are the shit. Omar, ehh.

  • @CrazyCow500 hes a great guitarist just maybe doesnt play the same kinda style that john an flea posses

  • @CrazyCow500 i love it when people get upset for not understanding... they are playing nonsense and calling it music? yeah that's exactly what's happening right here

  • I have to say i didn't like it that much either. I only liked the part at 6:00 . Thing is Omar plays theoretically nice music. Basically music for theory nerds. I did some study in music and this is the result pretty much. Modern (atonal) music sounds like this. I personally don't enjoy it. It doesn't give me the feeling melodic music does. I find modern music to be very dull. Well. Here we are i guess. I understand your point but it isn't nonsense. It's just different. Not always in a good way

  • @WannabeFruFru i was being sarcastic in response to what crazycow500 said about them playing nonsense and calling it music.. i actually enjoyed it very much.. i think omar is one of the most creative guitarist of our times, thus always innovating.. what happens when people constantly innovate? they can be misunderstood.. and that's exactly when people that don't know what they're talking about (like crazycow) thinks they are playing nonsense.. i'm glad that you understand..

  • @WannabeFruFru omar actually knows nothing about music theory, he does it all by ear and feel, which explains how he breaks so many rules and is not very consistent

  • Possible, i dont know omar that much. but i know modern music is all about inconsistency . I got mixed up. It could be that omar like this kind of music and replicates them the way he hears it. Because a lot of self taught artists are very melodic. They emulate what they like to hear or rather what they want to hear.

  • mi clitoris is hard

  • completely amazing. bass could be louder though.

  • So a Puerto Rican, An Aussie, and Italian American walk onto a stage and what do you get, great fucking music. This is great!

  • flea is a beast

  • WTF is Omar playing? is good to play outside but this sounds like one of those "shred videos". Omar is trying to play like a fusion guy but he doesn't know how to release the tension ala Scofield.

  • @francisco444 Hahaha I was thinkin the same thing! For a second I thought it was one of those videos.

  • I really like Omar's playing, his solo's sound glitchy and weird like IDM or something. Nice to see some rock musicians breaking the generic rock sound..... which lets face it, is getting pretty lame

  • @rudey6933 His fuzz sound is pretty brilliant in this video. His wacky scales are great too

  • Well I dig Omar's input during this jam. Flea and John obviously vibe with him too, I mean they are performing with him. I doubt any of the Omar haters in this comment section will ever have the pleasure to do so. Improvisation is improvisation, no need to get weird about it.

  • im not really into dissonant music i like melody a lot, im not saying that people just pretend to like music thats all dissonant i used to think that sort of because it sounds awful to me. i want to hear some beautiful melodies like frusciante around 6:15. but that's just me i suppose it's all taste in the end.. there's not really good or bad. i loved part 1 of this jam though, and this is interesting but not my cup of tea

  • god that was some straight funk!

  • That was awesome. I just wish John was a little louder!

  • total video game music

  • omar reminds me of robert fripp

  • Personally I like Omar's parts, he adds a nice, dark touch to the beautiful grooviness.

Not to say that it isn't all beautiful already.

  • this video make me smile.....

  • Fuck he better go and play with volta!!!! To long to write lol seriiusly hes so good there but he sucks at improvisation he does the same 5 licks for 10 min im not a hater but i like to be real .rhcp amazing

  • god i think i just had an orgasm...

    this is amazing...speechless...

  • my eyes popped out, my dick got hard, and i dropped my jaw

  • @LoveJFrusciante That was both psycho and sexy, sir.

  • I could not speak I was in shock

  • @LoveJFrusciante did it drop on your dick?

  • it also seems like every note in omars solo is out of key, which is impressive for resisting to fall into key seeing as he's clearly more than capable

  • @youreonfiretonight not every note, but he's certainly not in key. i dnt understand how he does it and manages to make it sound good.

  • @eightBaLL288 and he plays with size 13 strings wtf crazyyyy.

  • awww....the hug in the end! what a sweet end to such an intense gig...would kill to see them play like this live

  • Omar is GOD!!!!!!!!

  • @stripedmusic3

    Ohmar God yes! :)))

  • oh god this sounds like its bubbling over! i'd love to play a video game with this as the soundtrack.

  • Just watched this again, and was able to relax and forget about my deployment. favorite part of this is at 5:55 all the way to the end.

  • @Indiego89 - I first saw this in Baghdad. Good luck bro.

  • @Indiego89 this.

  • @AckAttack77 what?

  • @Indiego89 "this." is like, i completely agree.

  • @TheArcbuilding jealous much? im the guy who repeatedly screams "yeah!". there is no comparison to listening them through their custom vintage equipment

  • i think youtube should show the names of people who disliked some video.

so people could beat the hell out of them

  • Why can't at the drive in do one last tour?

  • i'd be having a super sweet dance session to this shit.

  • i love the part @8:02 when they miscommunicate and one starts playing the next bit by accident :]

  • "THAT WAS AWESOME!!!!" - Random dude

  • how the fuck do these guys do that, it's like there telepathic

  • @frusciantefan69

Haha, I'm betting the rhythmic sections of this are NOT improvised, haha

  • @frusciantefan69 they worked hard on this shit while they were on tour together. they were gonna put out a record, but like most things, never happened...

  • @DimebagsLeftToe

    these are just songs.

    not really jams.

well the solos were improvised i thing

  • @k0stil i know... they worked on them and were going to release them but just had a show

  • @DimebagsLeftToe

well i think that they will release it someday cuz frusciante/omar album havent been released for 7 years.

  • @k0stil actually they just put out two a few months ago

  • @DimebagsLeftToe

    yeah i know.

    one was recorded in 2003.

    and another - 2006

  • Intergalactic Dirt Funk

  • great musicians of our time. And that guy from Mars Volta.

  • The playing out of key stuff developed in the 60's w/ the experimental psycadelic music , if i'm correct. Omar does a lot of that. Hearing him play live on these videos makes u feel like youre in a different decade. --- in a good way.

  • @cr87129

Oh it's been around MUCH longer than that dude. Off key shit goes back further than we have records of I'm sure.

  • I LOVE Flea, I love John, I love Omar and I absolutely love this.

  • im the guy yelling "YEEAAHHH!" after every dope ass change. this was on or around fleas bday cus they brought in a cake and sang happy birthday to him. they stuck around and talked to people a bit. omar's brother marcel was there too. this was arranged by chuck dukoski black flag's og bass player. as of yet a once in a lifetime type deal

  • about playing out of key and people thinking that omar plays out of key not un purpose , he is just untalented and has no ears : watch?v=Ycfl0huGhoQ

  • @k0stil i cant tell if youre complimenting him or saying he sucks, cuz in the video you included he plays pretty damn well and in key the whole time except for in the middle for like 2 secs

  • @DimebagsLeftToe

    i`m complimenting him.

but there is a lot of playing out of key.

sometimes playing out of key is cool like here.

solo in 666 by frusciante is out of key.

i`m saying that he plays out of key not because people think he has no ears, but because it`s such a style.

he plays in key a lot of time.

  • @k0stil Omar does play out of key on purpose.

  • holy shit fleas bass line!

  • Damn white people, don't got rhythm that's y they don't get Omar n that's why I love john and flea.

I wish more musicians could think outside the box.

  • @ 6:00 when john does those sick lines. is he playing some kind of whole tone scale?

  • why cant they be on stage together more often?

  • John's smile @ 8:07 ♥

  • 13 haters go to a hell.

Because these musicians the most native and favorite for me.

  • Omar's shit is cool to me i like when he goes way out there but then brings it back to the riff everyone is playing but thats just me.

  • I love the way he plays, its really crpytic and erie... You can hear it in ATDI and TMV quite distinctly, I thing its really what makes a LOT of their sound (both)

id love to jam with 'em

  • fiko meio nada ve

  • Fuck. If they don´t like Omar´s playing, they don´t. Period. It´s not because they´re some dumb people or "they can´t understand those dissonant notes". It just doesn´t sound good to some ears. I personally don´t like it either. But I love John and Flea.

  • @tweenboxyeah but you can learn to enjoy it, it doesn't even take much. appreciation of music is somewhat acquired over years ... I mean when i was 13 all i listened to was punk music .. and now i can appreciate and love music by Schoenberg. you know how boring music would be if it was ALL on the major scale and each note placed on the beat? I mean, composers basically threw out the regular triad harmonies and major scales like 200 years ago...and thats still what most people today like.

  • I love Omar :D Hard to believe the man's already 34 years old..

  • @vxo8283 His improv isn't pleasant to the ear simply because he's not playing in the relative key to Flea's/John's, but Omar has said that he has no knowledge of musical theory whatsoever, so in live jams like this....ur gonna get that. Don't be so hard on him, for a selftaught musician, he generally does really well

  • Comment removed

  • @qwerrik There you go....you're speaking about him based on one performance how many years ago, nearly a decade now. For a self taught musician, he has composed way better music, and has played way better songs than many trained musicians I know. Check out the song 'Tetragrammaton', its a 16 minute monolith of a song, and it was all brilliantly composed, and played by him, with a breathtaking solo at the end. And he CAN play live jams, he just sucked in this one, mostly cuz he was out of key.

  • @SuperGlaurung thx :)

  • @SuperGlaurung John is self taught. Flea learnt bass in 2 weeks

  • @SuperGlaurung

    he does that on purpose.

    he can play in key

  • @k0stil Exactly. Sometimes he plays in the "right" key, but then it sounds a bit boring. You have to know what you are doing to hit all of those tri tones and weird intervals, that shit isn't just chance. That's what makes him sound like him.

  • @Meegzter I really hate to be a musical grammar Nazi here, but tritones is one word.

  • Comment removed

  • These are people I would like to play guitar with.

  • omar kinda sucks here...i love dissonant/out playing but man o man

  • @livery9 dissonant out playing is omars whole guitar bit here....shut up you dont know what your talking about.

  • i hate it when people think that mars volta, suck live. the way omar plays his dissonant notes (which un informed people think are off notes) is so unique and very few have an open intellectual mind to just let it all go. omar play's a guitar backwards pretty much.

  • Flea. Flea flea flea, flea flea. Flea: Flea flea flea flea flea; flea flea.

    Also, FLEA!

  • omar has this fearless ingenuity with his playing, while john crafts a beautifull smooth melody with his.

both amazing in their own right.

  • Oh god 6:02...I'm chaning my pants.

  • omar sounds fine

  • Omar ruins everything when he does that noodling bullshit.

  • Johns part at 6:02 is the gem, and flea fooling around on that part is just awesome

  • omg i cant get enough of the fucking dissonance genius omar RODGRIGUEZ LOPEZ

  • Omar plays off key too much.

    And hes wierd.

  • @777jackpot1 Also known as genious!

  • yeah man .......not everything has to sound the same......check out mars volta ....its like a beatiful melody meets anarchy in sound and it coexists ...

  • 4:24 is why i can not wait to see flea and john (omar would be cool too) playing together again

  • omar play in a gibson sg?

  • briliant!

  • A+ 100. Would watch again!

  • Omar Rodriguez's brash tone and almost Sun Ra type phrasing in his soloing makes for mindblowing neo-jazz.

  • quite possibly could be the best jam circle, ever.

  • 6:37 mad riffing, you wont find stuff like this anywhere else. what a chemistry and class.

  • A better trio i could not have hoped for. so good and what is this i dont even

  • 4:24 ooooo yeah

  • that was fucking beautiful

  • 6:00

  • lmao that bass line is siiiiiiick

    so are the guitar parts

    so awesome

  • This jam session is amazing, you can hear the funk, afro-cuban and salsa styles rolled into this piece of audio soundscape!

  • Omar's got creativity where John's got technique. Naturally they'd gravitate toward each other - you can tell how much they're loving it. Three of the most unique musicians out there,

  • about six minutes John saves the day

  • fuck off duude

  • dude first off all Omar said that he didnt know music theory he just plays, so hes not purposly playing out of key, if he is at all second, it sounds badass, and third go fuck yourself lol

  • @Jkamria014 since when was not knowing theory an excuse to play bad music. Playing out of key sounds like shit and Omar sounds like shit.

  • @CrazyCow500 dude you mentally challenged, he doesnt use it as an excuse he has just said before that hes never been taught music theory, besides he isnt playing out of key, hes playing accidentals of the scales hes going through, he does understand scales and what notes work together but he doesnt care, He and many other people love his sound, so clearly he doesnt sound like shit.

  • @EvanTheMute accidentals are not diatonic. You dont have to be taught theory or know scales to stay in key. I will admit that hitting accidentals can be cool when done tastefully. I'm sure there are a lot of people that enjoy it but I can guarantee there are more that dont.

  • @CrazyCow500 I guess i cant fight you on that, but still, clearly John Frusciante likes omars style cause hes been doin work with him for years, and they just released thier own album together..

  • @EvanTheMute John is def eclectic. He's the reason I started playing and he proves that he has a very tasteful ear, I mean dude has written some of the most epic rock riffs/solos of all time. But for some reason I feel as if his obsession with Omar is more to do with energy than it is with music. I mean I've heard Omar play some pretty rad shit but stuff like this just throws me off. I can understand tryin to leap into uncharted territory but sometimes that has to just stay in the studio.

  • 6:39 Omar :D

  • Hehe xD!

  • @WrapedInPlain he is one smug mothafuker

  • What are they trying to????? lol

  • lol, the way omar is playing at the beginning sounds like one of the shred parodys

  • Comment removed

  • its ibanez!!!)))

  • no, its not. that is an SG II or junior, if my memory serves me. but i am pretty sure it is an SG (not a standard one of course). though omar typically plays modified ibanez jet kings now, he used a gibson for this little gig and has used it on past recordings. also used a squier supersonic back in the day. omar typically likes only bridge pups (particularly the seymour duncan jb, which i also use in my bridge).

  • Ibanezzzzzz!!!!

  • Waaaaw! It is... Well, I don't find the words to describe this! *_*

  • bravooo!!!! que bello!!!

  • This is soooooo amazing. i used to listen to this in college when i needed to focus and write essays. these 3 men are gifted in a way that i will never see in any other person. ten thumbs up!

  • I want to know where the fuck you go about finding a purple left handed 72.
