I love this song. My dad died 14 yrs ago whn I was 23 and every time I hear this song I think of him. Every time I think of him I play this song. I love Elton John and this is a beautiful song.
How kind of Elton to honour a request. A nice man at heart. Daniel my brother, beaten on a daily basis, the pain it still brings/ God bless that poor boy, though he is older than I. We have not spoken in over 15yrs and last saw him at my dad's funeral. I love you Danny boy. Wish you were not so messed up, so that we could be friends. You were always a kind man, yet so abbused all you're life to being homosexual. By the way, you can't beat that out of someone. Live and let live.
Sir Elton I wanted you to know that the first notes of your song "Daniel"-although they don't exactly match I am told-sound like the first notes of the Commuter Rail Train that goes through our town. I would start humming your "Daniel" song when I heard it. Thank you.
I appreciate this video and everyone's stories, I really do. But this video is truly misnamed. This is not "Daniel and the story behind it". This is a guy requesting that Elton John play the song Daniel for him. It is not the story of the song.
One a dark tormented night, 26 years tonight, our son Daniel was born. Stillborn. I went home with my husband, and without the brother that my 2 sons had been looking forward to meeting. "Your eyes have died, but you see more than I"
Thank You Elton John, for this song. Part of my grieving. Part of my healing.
This song was very special to my Brother Danny and I. He died earlier this evening, Still in shock. Suddenly the lyrics bring on a whole new meaning to me :(....Love Elton!! Miss you so much Danny :(
This was my brothers favorite song when he joined the Navy in 77. He is now gone and though his name isn't Daniel, it brings our time together as kids back every time I hear it.
The Difference between nowaday´s "superstars" and individuals that can hold the tittle of legends as Sir Elton John, if this favor would have been asked to a superstar of our time, seldom would any of them do it. However, although knighted, Sir Elton John Still keeps his humble background, and replies with a confident "sure" to the request of a simple man from the masses! what a great man!!!
"you are, older than me. Do you still feel the pain?" My Uncle was the youngest out of the siblings. I have heard many stories about him. I just wish that I could have met him some time in my life....
My Uncle Daniel passed away several years before I was born. Before he died, my parents promised him that if they ever had a son, they would name him Daniel. I was the son and today was the day when I finally learned about that promise (I'm 16 now). My dad and his 2 other siblings used to always listen to this song after he passed away. The lyrics of this song almost correlate to the same experience that my dad and his siblings had. The only difference is that in the song, the lyrics say "you a

Daniel is as poignant today as it was when Elton John recorded it! It's heartbreaking to read some of the personal connections with this song, but is what makes it one of those timeless classics.
I lost my best friend in the summer of 1991 (the year we graduated). His name was Daniel, he was 19, and he was an amazing person!! I still miss him. Every time I hear this song I think of him and all the good times we had drinking, fishing, and just hanging out listening to music.
Ok I'm sorry bro..I was being serious but I was also trying to make a point..I think the writer may have chose Spain because it not only rhymes with Plane but it's also a 1 syllable word wich makes the song flow smoother.. Look at it this way, Had the writer put Brazil instead of Spain, Don't you think that there'd be a lot of pissed off Spaniards ? Elton may have had more record sales in Spain than Brazil at the time so his management decided to err on the side of caution and go with Spain.
My mom's favorite older brother's name was daniel and he died tragically in a car accident as a 20 year old. When she first heard this song she was so upset she turned off the radio and vowed to avoid it because it was too painful. 20 years later she got to see elton john in a small local concert and when he started singing this she was shocked, because she'd been trying to forget it for so long. She just started sobbing, but she said it was a really therapeutic moment. XOXO mom!
@fuzzypeachmonkey -- My brother died in a car accident at age 17, right before Thanksgiving. I love this song, because it reminds me of him, but it hurts to listen to it, even so many years later. It was really nice of EJ to play this song for that man.
@gsaugen That's a very good question...He could have easily ommited Spain and instead sang, "Daniel is leaving tonight on a plane, I could see the red tail lights, Heading for Rancho Cucamonga".
Did he forget the words at one point.! This is only the second live song I've ever heard him forget them. This one and one from the 70's when he was singing "Goodbye" live. I love him, such a cutie.
@matado0o0r That's what I said, you dolt. I like this version with JUST the piano and NO OTHER INSTRUMENTS. Do you understand now or should I break out the crayons?
it is about a fictional veteran who was blinded as a result of the war ("your eyes have died"/"but you see more than I") and travels to Spain to escape those around him back home ("do you still feel the pain"/"of the scars that won't heal?"), including his brother, from whose point of view the story is told.
