  • Search Davy Graham and Alexis Korner. Davy Graham was to contemporary folk what Elvis or the Beatles were to Pop

  • who else recorded this luvly song? it feels like a HYMN to ALMIGHTY GOD.

    Oh God it does!

  • I continue to be absolutely staggered by this incredible group. Added to their extraordinary musicianship and cohesiveness, they're also amazingly versatile. RIP Bert, long live Pentagle.

  • will the circle jerk be unbroken

  • People often can't appreciate the shoulders than later artists stand on! Compare what was before Jansch, Renbourne, Graham, Korner and the like. They were the "beatles" of the genre

  • @gazzump I must ask. Who is Graham and Korner? I'm on a folk music spree and I need any wisdom i can get my hands on :)

  • Dear Bert,

  • I have many versions of this great song. I like the unforced, laid-back, effortless ambience of this. Nice man, Bert, a genuine talent too. Nothing wasted. I've been reminding myself of the man's music these past few hours and it is abundantly clear that his place in musical history has long been assured. Thanks for the music, Bert, we are all richer for your time on earth.

  • RIP Bert. Thank you so much.

  • RIP Bert Jansch.

  • Much as I love Bert Jansch (RIP) & Jacqui McShee's pleasant warblings - gotta say the Hayseed Dixie version just trumps this for sheer virtuosity

  • Comment removed

  • @PissteethJenkins "sheer virtousity"?? Those small time stooges don't come close to the playing of most good bluegrass groups. They're just a crude bar band and are musical dwarves compared to Pentangle. Great musicianship can be subtle, smooth, and jazzy. It doesn't always need to super fast.

  • Did they ever record this? Although for me this will always be a Gospel song (as well as brilliantly done by the Carter Family), I really like this version. Brilliant.

  • @boleary100 Yeah they did, it's on their album 'Reflection'. I highly recommend it

  • I saw them about 10 years ago in Milton Keynes, UK. Still fantastic

  • the best version of this song , by far . . . .

  • precious, the pentangle have been amazing this California boy since the early 70's

  • beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.

  • What a voice!

  • superb

  • This still is in my top 20 fave videos. Very interesting interpretation of a classic, jazzy, restrained and English "down home". Thanks so much!

  • this must be a pretty old song by looks of the graphics

  • Four Wonderfull Minutes of Pure Bliss.

If there are people in Holland (The Hague) wanna cover this and their style of music please contact me via my account.

We'll see where it takes us...

  • great find! adding this to my list

  • What a band! What a song! Thanks for posting

  • i think the british word is "Knackerd" - meaning they all look completely stoned here. Still, very great rendition of this song....

  • Great, an incredible interpretation of this classic.

  • What is this? Hypnotic drum beat and a vocal elixir to intoxicate all senses? Not tutti fruity, more like spacey gracey... cute!

  • The melody for the lyrics sounds like something famous I've heard before.....'Here I am Lord'????

  • @incongra bert never play wah-wah, john renbourn play all electric guitars and aslo arranged most of pentangle stuff

  • @edli55 well me never know that. Me just know bert played a lectric guitar in later career. I like renbourn a lot.

  • @incongra i talked to john personally once , because pentangle always was introduced as an accoustic band and he has often to expalain about this. see all videos and bert always play accoustic, john aslo play harmonica on this track, ok peace

  • @edli55 thanks for some very interesting information nevertheless.

  • Beautiful song, takes me back to my youth...

  • Ein Wunderbarer und Wunderschöner Song, 5***** Sterne für diese Geile Stimme...Gänsehaut pur!!!!

  • They are all STONED - hard

  • @blumenthol Who cares? Shut up about stupid bullshit like that and listen to the music. The music is all that matters.

  • Listen to that bass man...some is some smooth playing

  • @TheJoJoSmack Danny Thompson was amazing, he played on many great albums mainly John Martyns and Nick Drakes, he was that good!

  • Smooth and beautiful, love it.

  • You can download a lot of Pentangle music from iTunes. One of my favorite bands.

  • Quelle merveilleuse chanson ! Thanks my Lord. Love you Pentangle.

  • very very good love it

  • OOh thank you, I found this as a result of a comment made on my channel, I have not heard this group in years.. I had totally forgotton about their existence.. Now I have found two wonderful songs. The childhood memories. My brother and dad used to listen to them

She had a beautiful voice - sigh!!! Take me back please..

  • Love this song greatly, this is one of the better versions. Not expectin to die soon ( though anything can happen to anyone) but this is a definite song I want played when my coffin gets taken out @ the end of my funeral, wanted this for this purpose for decades. May have mebtioned this to my sons & a few over time, but doubt anyone has remembered, so if it isn't documented sure hope someone reminds the sons

  • @zephyrseas Me too! Only found this version now cos I just found the bit of paper I'd written my funeral instructions on in a maudlin moment years ago - still want this song though - oh, and black horses and a carriage would be nice...

  • wonderful rendition, Be blessed, rev.jon

  • amazing

  • Truly beautiful! Awesome rendition with a beautiful voice!

  • More than spontaneous this performance is deliberate and sophisticated. It appeals more to intellect than to affection. They have a touch of their own to that popular bluegrass-gospel.

  • Incredibly beautiful. Yes, I do tap my feet to this one.

  • I have to say I prefer the slow, old spiritual version as opposed to the upbeat, country version. My favorite is The Staple Singers' version of this song. Which I was searching for on here, and came across Pentagle's version. To me the song is just supposed to have a deep spiritual cry instead of sounding like a hoedown.

  • i love this song soooooo much, it catches me behind my ribs. the harmonica makes me smile!! lol

  • The drums on this tune rock. Listen to the way he drags out the hi-hat. Amazing drummer with an amazing band.

  • yeah, pretty swingin for country/bluegrass. really impressive.

  • Terry Cox, iirc. When that wonderful band broke up he opened a bar on Majorca insted of teaming up with musicians of lower standards. That´s what I call style.

  • Love this!

  • If you love her voice, search out "Morgane". What a beautiful piece of music sung by McShee. I'm playing it on loop.

  • To the current folk who comment! see below ! (And sorry if I come across as not happy ) But we oldies ,first time round don't need to be clever!..it is still good (saw them live) and if you can match her range or play like Bert..well done you! Try Angie!

  • This is the most beautiful version I have ever heard. The singer is absolutely fantastic. - Is it possible to fall in love by video?

  • only every time you hear it!

  • @Bradstonian24 Shes probably 80 now, Im sure she still gives great gummers! Look her up sometime!

  • @hitman748 Jacqui McShee is nearly 70, and still performing :)

  • @Bradstonian24 u should check out there other stuff, and for the record she is mine so hands off lol jk <3

  • i love the guitar work. its subtle but its really interesting.

  • can anyone tells me the lyrics. thanks

  • yeah, if you can't tap your feet to a song its shit isn't it? its no achy breaky heart is it?

    lol

  • I know Pentangle and this version from my childhood; it's a sprirtual, not meant to be a foot-tapper (although I am as I sing along :)

I just watched the Carter family version and yes, it is country and a foot-tapper. But then, country's not my thing.

    DIffr'nt strokes... *shrug*

  • PK:

Exactly. If we all enjoyed the exact same thing, we would all be listening to an extremely limited range of music. As it is, there is something for everyone. I like the country, foot-tapping, hand-clapping, feel good version. For those that like this version, I am glad it was produced. I try not to belittle another's taste in art. This is just not for me. I did listen with an open mind to a new artist. That too is a good thing.

  • Well, I like country, and in that genre, Johnny Cash and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (Second Ciclre) is unbeatable. This version from Pentangle I love (and have since it first came out, way back in the middle ages). Jackie has a beautiful voice (and hair...!!!) and the whole song is wonderfully understated.

  • @Leonid3s Errm, ever think perhaps you could have missed the point?

  • I have a new favorite band!

  • My Calc teacher looked just like this woman (in 2001) - plaid skirt, long hair, sweater and all - even down to the shoes. Now I know where she got the look (^_^) Oh and I love this version of this song.

  • Everyone looked like this in 1972!

  • ooh so relaxing.. just listening to this with the rain outside

  • This is a haunting, sort of an ethereal recording. I agree, second only to the Carter family, but it is hard to compare the two...so different...apples and oranges sort of a thing. I am glad it is here as the delicate voice makes it such a strong piece.

  • They are stoned - knackered - must have been some damn good dope just before the video shoot. Still, it is a great song and performance - just funny to watch in a 70's sort of period way. Know what I mean man?

  • Outstanding version...

  • Hahaha this is so damn old But it sounds nice!

  • I love this song,...the Circle for me however was broken as the Undertaker came and took my mother away,...I followed close by her trying to hold up and be brave,...but I could not hold my sorrow when they placed her in the grave,...undertaker please drive slow so I can see her one last chance,...

  • what a fabulous voice! one of the best groups ever!

  • I've just got back from the Pentangle concert in Cardiff. They played this as their encore. Marvelous.

Old John's not looking too good now, but he can still play.

  • Fucking cool !

  • she has an ins=teresting face that goes with an interesting voice ! i bloody love this music ! wish i was around in the 60s not this smelly ole emo era :(

  • Awesome - thank you for uploading this beautiful song, so beautifully performed.

  • jacqui has one hell of a voice and the music is soooooooooooooooooo cool !!!

  • spacemen 3 have a great version of this song

  • Second only to Jasmin Tabatabai's, IMHO.

  • a beautiful song from a great group

  • Ugly??? No way.

  • Ugly Woman, lovely voice

  • You're 55, making the comment of a 3 year old. After over half a century of existence, surely civility isn't such a difficult concept to grapple with?

  • She´s not ugly.

  • Hahahaha

  • You're right mate, she's a munter. Good voice, though.

  • They all look stoned.

  • i got to disagree with whotookaegir here and say I think this version spooks th ehell out of the carter families version (even though I love their version)...there's something witchy about this version that gives me chills. Jacqui's voice is so beautiful. Nice high harmonies from bert. excellent, wild, what a group. out of this world.

  • 2nd only to the Carter Family original.

  • Err first to all. Great to see and listen to :-)

  • thanx seen them many times, nice,

  • One of the most amazing interpretations of this song. They change it a lot, with the rhythm shift, the 7th chords and Renbourne's surprising phased guitar subtly rising over the band's acoustic instrumentation. It's a bizarre song, and, while most people play it straight, the Pentangle mine it for all it's jazzy weirdness. Brilliant.

  • she has an incredibly true voice

  • oh, im probably wrong about the harp, he's still ace! danny

  • aha!

it'll be bert as he played on ralph mctell's album at the time. unbelievable! i didnt know i knew anything about pentangle. just catching up on them, obviously i knew bert's stuff before. he's genius.

    danny

  • Who plays the harmonica? Jansch or Renbourn? I can't tell!

  • Sorry, it's neither of 'em! So who?

  • It's the lazy, gentle way that Pentangle play...seems so effortless and fluid, with improvisational threads of genius, that raises this way above a lot of music of that era. They make you believe this music has somehow always been there, that it's part of the fabric of life, and that it'll be there long after you're gone.

  • nicely put :thumbs up:

  • Proper musicians - playing graceful, ambient melodies - music today is crap!

  • nice soft muzik and so hippy and peaceful

  • I have this on film done by a company who did a lot of great promo films in the early 70's.They also did SLade T. REx, Gilbert O'Sullivan,Dawn,Christie,The Sweet & loads more

  • beautiful

  • Nice, Very nice.

  • It is a good song and performance of. I also thought they looked "knackered" (stoned) - funny to read another commenter say the same. Still, a good play. I gave it a 5: 4 stars for the music - 1 star for being able to play it stoned. Love it.

  • Interesting version of the original Carter Family version. Nice though, the addition of drums adds something to it.

  • " Trying to unearth more stuff from this great band and Jansch/Renbourn "

    check your inbox mate .

  • Limewire

  • Dang addictive site there!

  • "Limewire"

no thanks. I was actually quoting that fawnface fellow. that's why I wrote "check your inbox mate", innit? thanks for the thought tho.

  • thanks a million .

  • anyway it sounds beautiful. a great folk a five

  • Looks suspiciously like this performance was overdubbed with the released recording. They all look knackered.

  • Stoned! lol
