@quicklearner96 Dude who cares if he's on juice? Its really not a bad thing. Bruce Lee probably was, roids were legal in the 60s and 70s and nobody cared. Either you are great or you are not. Manny is great. Steroids did not make him great, he was born with immense gifts.
@toby099 not true. they don't just make your muscles bigger. they also increase your strenght, endurance, decrease the time you need to rest between workouts, etc.
Yeah as the above post states, conditioning was Duran's greatest weakness. He loved to chow and drink. In the second Leonard fight, he showed up soft around the belly and thought Ray would cower from his presence. He should have trained harder than that 1st fight. I remember the press conference for the 3rd Leonard fight. Duran looked like a stuffed pig, much like today. Pathetic.
In sparring, especially in these days, Duran treated sparring like it was the real fight. Many sparring partners would ask him to take it easy, but he never did. He was and will forever be awesome.
i heard a story one time where duran and arguello bumped into each other at some hotel lobby , alexis was gracious but duran said "man i am dyimg to knock you out " they never fought , but as always duran became friends with everybody as alexis came from the same poverty he did , as you see duran had to go super easy on stallone who is supposed to be a heavyweight in rocky
Duran accomplished what Hagler,Hearns,Benitez could not, beat a undefeated and prime Sugar Ray Leonard. Score one for the liitle guys with hands of stone.
@makpak Good point,I apologize. And Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns should both apologize to Aron Pryor too,for not giving him a shot at the title.Ray gave Duran three opportunities but he ignored Aron like the plague.
@MrBoomy8 I made a mistake in my comment,I did not mean to post that Duran was afraid of Pryor.Duran is a legend and p4p one of the greatest and he feared no man.I agree,an in shape Duran would have demolished Pryor.
I NEVER forgive a boxer for quitting, the only one I will forgive is Roberto Duran because he more than made up for it after he quit versus Sugar Ray.Have to give respect to a a boxer that starts his career at lightweight and then moves up several weight classes and goes Toe To Toe with natural Middleweights and welters like Barkley,Hagler,Leonard,Hearns,Moore.
@gandil408 I meet "Hands of Stone" at the Main Street gym In Downtown Los angeles. I think we was tuning up to fight Carlos Palomino. As he was walking into the ring I stepped in front of him and padded him on the shoulder. He gave me a humble smile and kept walking. Duran could of objected to some nobody putting his hands on him but he had the street smarts to know that I was a true fan.
fuck..Duran is the LEGEND...I lika his style and he´s a greatest boxer all the time.I miss him. He a greatest than Muhammad Ali. Sorry Ali-fans. but I like Ali so much.
thats because Stallone really isnt a big person either .They just made people think that because he was playing a heavyweight but was really a middleweight if he was really boxing
Duran was an artist in there. His feinting with the right and planting a left to the body was classic. And the way he loaded up on that right was scary. One of the best 'finishers' in the business. I miss him.
i remember the duran - moore fight. the comentator is talking about how duran is like a surgeon . cutting up moore. durans footwork , speed , animal look in his eyes and his way of destroying fighters inside body shots were scary. the man was the greatest along with ali my two hero`s of all time . LEGENDS......GOD BLESS . from SCOTLAND .
How do you explain it? Simple. Duran was past his prime by that point. What people tend to forget is that by the time he fought Leonard in Montreal, Duran had been fighting as a pro for 13 years and was 29 years old. In lighter weights, that's a career right there. Even had Duran stayed in top condition past Montreal, in many ways he was pretty much done at that point.
Durans a legend, he was what? 75-1 or something at lightweight and the guy he lost to DeJesus, he destroyed twice after that.
Then he moved up to welterweight and beat a sugar ray leonard, went up to middleweight and beat Moore and Barkley and also went the distance with arguably the greatest middleweight of all time, Hagler.
Durans arguably the greatest lightweight of all time, lightweight was his natural weight and he went all the way up to super middleweight and competed with the greatest.
@markybh0y He was a bit overrated Viruet outpointed him at his best weight lightweight and leonard made a mistake but lost a very close decision, dejesus knocked him down and beat him.But he really didnt beat great fighters except the leonard mistake. He lost to everyone else that was great.Did you notice? Barkley and moore fucking BUMS!
@markybh0y Duran got the decision over viruet but I saw the fight live at the nassau colliseum 1975 and viruet beat duran and the crowd booed on the decision giving it to duran. It was a miscarriage of justice.Duran had a problem beating boxers. He doesnt qualify in the top 5 of all time.
@MrBoomy8 yes i do, robinson didn't quit in the maxim fight and slurring ali didn't quit in the holmes fight. if you'd like to enlighten me, describe how they quit. describe what they said, or what sign language they used to quit, i'd really like to know.
here, i'll do it for you. duran walked away and said 'no mas' and waved his hand in a 'no more' motion, in total defeat and submission. even though there were over 3 rounds left to fight, duran decided to take a loss instead of try.
@MrBoomy8 exactyl lol, there were over 3 rounds left and he walked away from the fight, i.e. quit the fight. instead of trying for the rest of the fight, he just gave up.
I use to be an athlete. Ofcourse not even close to Durans league, but staying in shape is a problem. It really is, sometimes you just can't or won't want to work out . In the case of Duran, your life can depend on working out, but sometimes you just don't have it...........in or out of the ring.
@viglen4 ur a tard. duran had great conditioning. he just ate to much and lost his motivation later in his career. he was a better boxer than leonard.
@viglen4 Conditioning was definitely not durans weakness, all the boxers and trainers at the time say that duran worked like a dog training. His weakness was food. He would go from 130 to 200 then back to 130 all the time. That takes a massive toll on the body.
so what. He beat Leonard when Ray was inexperienced, and he still could not knock him out with Ray fighting Duran's inside fight. Then Ray almost knocks him out in the rematch and Duran quits, Then Duran loses to all the legends. Hagler,Hearns,Benitez,Leonard. Moore and Barkley were not legends. Who were the greast fighters Duran knocked out. We know Hearns knocked out Cueves and Duran and outboxed Benitez and Hill
Hearns could and did get reached on numerous, i repeat NUMEROUS occasions. he's the only fighter out of the greats in that group to have been knocked out the most, the only one who got knocked out in his 20's by a relative no name, and the only one to lose his 2 biggest fights at his 2 best weights. The victory over Duran means nothing if he cant beat a real middleweight. knocking out cuevas means nothing if he couldn't knock out leonard..let's not even talk about the rematch with barkley
Benitez lost to leonard and didn't even NEED a rematch. Duran went up 12 lbs and beat leonard. period. if benitez was so great he couldn've pulled something out of his ass to beat leonard or hearns. his biggest joy is waiting for duran to move up to middleweight after no mas and take advantage of his slowness at that weight. then he lost to Moore, Hamsho, and the list goes on..don't use the "he moved too high in weight" excuse either becuase someone can easily say the same for Duran
at 24 Leonard wasn't that inexperienced; and Ray NEVER almost KO'd Duran in their rematch. What people forget about Duran is: he was only a lightweight 135. Who fought and beat the greatest welter of his generation; and the greatest middleweight as well on roughly even terms.
i couldn't agree more. Nathan Hot Dogs just doesn't like the fact that people talk about duran more than Hearns and Benitez. If Ray was so inexperienced when he fought benitez wouldn't that mean that it would take MORE skill to beat Duran in 1980 than Benitez in 79'? that fucks up his whole argument that benitez was better
benitez wasnt better than duran. Benitez was better than Duran in 1982. You could say the same thing about Kirkland laing becuz he got his number tthat same year. Duran just too lazy and dont got any fire. I seen it with lot of fighters-Dwight Braxton, Dwight Davison, Hagler in the Leonard fight-they lose becuz they lay back too much.
A dummy DURAN was a fuckin lightweight, his best fightin weight would have been light-welter but he bypassed the division to go after leonard. leonard hagler hearns benitez were naturally bigger men, DURAN was the greatest fighter who ever lived and IF he could have kept in shape he would have never lost!!
mira duran lo obligaron a rendirse por cuestiones de dinero y ademas le habian prometido una tercera pelea con Leonard, y despues milagrosamente a Leonard se le cae la retina, si Duran hubiese peleado nuevamente con leonard lo hubiese matado...
Hey nathan hot dog,..Duran DID MOVE UP AND DID REAL WELL..HE MOVED UP TO FIGHT LEONARD, AND WON,..SOMETHING NO ONE HAD DONE IN 40YRS,..SINCE ARMSTRONG..and won against davey moore for jr middleweight,..and middleweight against barkley!
similarities stop there tho eyotan..manny is lefty,..hasnt half the record that roberto does,..but there's still time. i like pac,..luvd duran,..seen almost all his fights and actually shook his gloves once in a fight in chicago...my hero.
duran was pound for pound the greatest fighter ever (when he was properly conditioned). Only one fighter ever beat a PROPERLY CONDITIONED Duran. Marvin Hagler in 1983. Yet Duran shook hagler up in the 13th. No other natural lightweight in boxing history could past age 30 do that to one of the top five middleweights of all time in the middle of his title reign.
duran wasn't overrated. he shud of never left lightweight because he completely dominated that weight. But he went up in weights and thats when he started to have problems. Duran being overrated is the most stupid thing i have ever heard.
Hard to trash Duran for not beating Hearns. The guy was past his prime at that point. But let's look what he did outside of his prime: beat Sugar Ray, Barkley at middleweight (who beat Hearns twice) and gave Hagler a hell of a fight at middleweight. He was one of the top two or three lightweights in history and an all-time great, period!
Stallone is a joke. Great Actor and movies but terrible boxer. Why are you guys surprised Duran outclasses him? Fact is Duran never outclassed Tommy or Wilfred or Ray.
He beat Ray in the first fight, no excuses for that one. Ray can say all he wants about fighting Duran's fight but Duran made him fight his fight that's why he won.
what the fuck are you talking about? of course duran would run rings around stalone, one of them is a boxer and one is an actor do you want me to explain which one? and secondly the thing is completely scripted do you think they were in for real? and what would you rather see an absoloute terrible acting performance from some former boxer, or a terrible boxing performance and a half decent acting job from an actor?
Shut the fuck up man Stallone is an ACTOR, hes not even a boxer. No one cares, we watch Rocky because its inspirational not because we think its real.
He takes like 300 clean shots to the face every fight in the series, anyone would be dead if they somehow stayed on their feet for that long.
lol what kind of stupid idiots are compare these to guys give em a damn break sylvester is not even a real fighter. so if i go to a lakers game and they call me out for a shot and miss will they copare kobe and say his greater than me lmao
to los005 yeah your right i actually take it back duran would have beaten chavez he had a little more boxing true true ive actually studied films on him now that you mentioned it and yeah your right he would have looking at it from a neutral prespective your right but it would have still been a great fight wouldnt it

Duran wouldn´t beat Chavez NEVER. Chavez is the greatest latin american fighter ever. undestrucible at hi prime. duran was great also but only is second to chavez.. i even wonder if duran would have beat de la hoya
your kidding right, did you see how easy Randall knocked down Chavez, duran could box and could take a good shot and had tremendous ko power, he would of destroyed chavez and de la hoya as well as trinidad.
Man, I'm a huge Chavez fan and he was my favorite fighter growing up, but Duran is the best Lightweight in history. Almost everything Chavez did Duran did at least a little better, whether it be offense, movement, energy, (Duran didn't have the slow starts that Chavez usually did Haugen fight aside) head movement, foot movement, etc.
Fan of Chavez or not, if the two fought while both at their best, I'd be betting money on Duran.

Who cares who the better boxer is. Who's richer and has more longevity and popularity, the movie star or the athlete? Most young people now don't even know who Roberto Duran is.
They didn't take my comment because it had a url? Anyway, Sly did an interview where he talked about trying Duran for a potential Rocky 3 opponent too, though he went with Mr. T. Duran was too much for him. Stallone let's everyone know that he wasn't beating up Duran in a million years. Duran would've killed him even as a lt wt. No offense to Sly who's tough for an actor. Just search for Duran, hoeno & Stallone, you'll see the site pop up called ''Say what?''. Go to the main page, 2nd post down.
I like the comment were someone say,s Stallone was gettting the better. I,m laughing as am typing. I was a shit boxer but cruel as it sounds I would hold Stallone up for a couple of rounds. Duran was the man his timing speed and power were a wonder to behold. If you had a clue about boxing you would agree

good thing rocky didnt hit him hard tho. if duran said 'no mas' i dont think stallone would have understood spanish. duran was training to fite leonard in the rematch when this was made

@viglen4 look at duran vs bucahanan he had good conditioning when he wanted
theman1819 10 months ago
@viglen4 Conditioning was definitely not durans weakness, all the boxers and trainers at the time say that duran worked like a dog training. His weakness was food. He would go from 130 to 200 then back to 130 all the time. That takes a massive toll on the body.
Dyaxia 10 months ago
@viglen4 over eatingand under traing washis weakness. he proved manny times that he had good stamina.
ghns1133 8 months ago
NathanHotDogs 2 years ago
Hearns could and did get reached on numerous, i repeat NUMEROUS occasions. he's the only fighter out of the greats in that group to have been knocked out the most, the only one who got knocked out in his 20's by a relative no name, and the only one to lose his 2 biggest fights at his 2 best weights. The victory over Duran means nothing if he cant beat a real middleweight. knocking out cuevas means nothing if he couldn't knock out leonard..let's not even talk about the rematch with barkley
ksjb85 2 years ago
Benitez lost to leonard and didn't even NEED a rematch. Duran went up 12 lbs and beat leonard. period. if benitez was so great he couldn've pulled something out of his ass to beat leonard or hearns. his biggest joy is waiting for duran to move up to middleweight after no mas and take advantage of his slowness at that weight. then he lost to Moore, Hamsho, and the list goes on..don't use the "he moved too high in weight" excuse either becuase someone can easily say the same for Duran
ksjb85 2 years ago
at 24 Leonard wasn't that inexperienced; and Ray NEVER almost KO'd Duran in their rematch. What people forget about Duran is: he was only a lightweight 135. Who fought and beat the greatest welter of his generation; and the greatest middleweight as well on roughly even terms.
judaschongo 2 years ago
how is ray inexperienced with one less fight? Does one fight make that much difference or is there something more to the story?
Piglatinsuperstar 2 years ago
i couldn't agree more. Nathan Hot Dogs just doesn't like the fact that people talk about duran more than Hearns and Benitez. If Ray was so inexperienced when he fought benitez wouldn't that mean that it would take MORE skill to beat Duran in 1980 than Benitez in 79'? that fucks up his whole argument that benitez was better
ksjb85 2 years ago
benitez wasnt better than duran.
Piglatinsuperstar 2 years ago 2
A dummy DURAN was a fuckin lightweight, his best fightin weight would have been light-welter but he bypassed the division to go after leonard. leonard hagler hearns benitez were naturally bigger men, DURAN was the greatest fighter who ever lived and IF he could have kept in shape he would have never lost!!
viglen4 2 years ago 5
mira duran lo obligaron a rendirse por cuestiones de dinero y ademas le habian prometido una tercera pelea con Leonard, y despues milagrosamente a Leonard se le cae la retina, si Duran hubiese peleado nuevamente con leonard lo hubiese matado...

Hey nathan hot dog,..Duran DID MOVE UP AND DID REAL WELL..HE MOVED UP TO FIGHT LEONARD, AND WON,..SOMETHING NO ONE HAD DONE IN 40YRS,..SINCE ARMSTRONG..and won against davey moore for jr middleweight,..and middleweight against barkley!
northpoint43m 2 years ago 5
all fighters move up in weight like Hearns and Leonard and they all do well. So why couldn't Duran?
NathanHotDogs 2 years ago
Duran won world titles at four different weight classes, from 135-160

id like 2 see manny imitate a middle weight title 21 years after the start of his career
avalino79 2 years ago
similarities stop there tho eyotan..manny is lefty,..hasnt half the record that roberto does,..but there's still time. i like pac,..luvd duran,..seen almost all his fights and actually shook his gloves once in a fight in chicago...my hero.
northpoint43m 2 years ago
duran was pound for pound the greatest fighter ever (when he was properly conditioned).
To quote Sugar Ray Leonard "Duran was the best"

markbennett147 3 years ago
Yes, it is the Great Roberto Duran, the year is 1978 around the time he relinguished the lightweight crown to move up to the welters.

What? duran looked like an undernourished boy against hearns! that wasn't a fair fight. duran was great at his natural rate. never overrated at all!

Duran was out of his prime at 28? And he fought another 21 years. He was not out of his prime, he was overrated.
NathanHotDogs 3 years ago
'Duran was overrated'. Wow. Just wow.
huthut91 3 years ago
duran wasn't overrated. he shud of never left lightweight because he completely dominated that weight. But he went up in weights and thats when he started to have problems. Duran being overrated is the most stupid thing i have ever heard.
Futur3B0x1ngL3g3nd 3 years ago 4
Futur3B0x Remember Duran won 3 more titles as he went up...that made him the legend he is.
mutantes98 2 years ago
Hard to trash Duran for not beating Hearns. The guy was past his prime at that point. But let's look what he did outside of his prime: beat Sugar Ray, Barkley at middleweight (who beat Hearns twice) and gave Hagler a hell of a fight at middleweight. He was one of the top two or three lightweights in history and an all-time great, period!
jesses469 3 years ago
are you kidding me. You are trying to say chavez can beat duran and that so could de la hoya? lol...
Assface2k 3 years ago
Stallone is a joke. Great Actor and movies but terrible boxer. Why are you guys surprised Duran outclasses him? Fact is Duran never outclassed Tommy or Wilfred or Ray.
Boxing1977Boxing 3 years ago
He beat Ray in the first fight, no excuses for that one. Ray can say all he wants about fighting Duran's fight but Duran made him fight his fight that's why he won.
cosmic112 3 years ago 2
what the fuck are you talking about? of course duran would run rings around stalone, one of them is a boxer and one is an actor do you want me to explain which one? and secondly the thing is completely scripted do you think they were in for real? and what would you rather see an absoloute terrible acting performance from some former boxer, or a terrible boxing performance and a half decent acting job from an actor?
scottglynn1 3 years ago 3
Shut the fuck up man Stallone is an ACTOR, hes not even a boxer. No one cares, we watch Rocky because its inspirational not because we think its real.
He takes like 300 clean shots to the face every fight in the series, anyone would be dead if they somehow stayed on their feet for that long.

to los005 yeah your right i actually take it back duran would have beaten chavez he had a little more boxing true true ive actually studied films on him now that you mentioned it and yeah your right he would have looking at it from a neutral prespective your right but it would have still been a great fight wouldnt it

Duran wouldn´t beat Chavez NEVER. Chavez is the greatest latin american fighter ever. undestrucible at hi prime. duran was great also but only is second to chavez.. i even wonder if duran would have beat de la hoya
hessiquio 3 years ago
your kidding right, did you see how easy Randall knocked down Chavez, duran could box and could take a good shot and had tremendous ko power, he would of destroyed chavez and de la hoya as well as trinidad.
cosmic112 3 years ago 5
Man, I'm a huge Chavez fan and he was my favorite fighter growing up, but Duran is the best Lightweight in history. Almost everything Chavez did Duran did at least a little better, whether it be offense, movement, energy, (Duran didn't have the slow starts that Chavez usually did Haugen fight aside) head movement, foot movement, etc.
Fan of Chavez or not, if the two fought while both at their best, I'd be betting money on Duran.
thewandering01 3 years ago 6
Ah my friend, what a fight that would be. No running, no hugging, just walk up to the middle and throw bombs until one went down.
I, however, would put my money on chavez. but either way, the winner would have his share of bumps and bruises to show off.

Who cares who the better boxer is. Who's richer and has more longevity and popularity, the movie star or the athlete? Most young people now don't even know who Roberto Duran is.
LockmanTom 3 years ago
Some people want to be popular/movie star some people want to be real fighters. not everybody has the same motives in life

listen man, if you don't know who duran is your knowledge about boxing is pathetic.
juandi2570 3 years ago 2
They didn't take my comment because it had a url? Anyway, Sly did an interview where he talked about trying Duran for a potential Rocky 3 opponent too, though he went with Mr. T. Duran was too much for him. Stallone let's everyone know that he wasn't beating up Duran in a million years. Duran would've killed him even as a lt wt. No offense to Sly who's tough for an actor. Just search for Duran, hoeno & Stallone, you'll see the site pop up called ''Say what?''. Go to the main page, 2nd post down.
Methos5000plus 3 years ago
I like the comment were someone say,s Stallone was gettting the better. I,m laughing as am typing. I was a shit boxer but cruel as it sounds I would hold Stallone up for a couple of rounds. Duran was the man his timing speed and power were a wonder to behold. If you had a clue about boxing you would agree
