I came across this song in a book I am reading (Son Of Hamas). It's strange to imagine hearing this song being played endlessly at times, recieving interrogation and torture at a Palestinan/Israeli prison. . . awful descriptions accompanied by an awesome song.
Having first heard Leonard Cohen in a school common room in 1969 he has been a great source of pleasure to me ever since. Fantastic lyrics, beautiful music, thank you for your creativity and excellent musicality, you are a unique star.
I saw Mr Cohen in Melbourne in November last year for the first time since becoming a fan in 1974. It was an amazing show. I heard he lost a lot of do re mi in the crash and it was the reason he decided to tour again. I don't care. It was one of the five concert highlights of my life.
Love you Leonard.....you're a champ......but.....take Berlin if you want it.....but Manhattan still does and will always belong to Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II. May God Save The Queen....don't forget, it's all on 99 year lease - LOL

@avidan39 Don't mean to be rude - Cohen IS the exemplar of people who made a better society - but he used to be known as Captain Mandrax, and his history of substance, er, Enjoyment, is well known. If you're brilliant, you can improve society while ignoring its mores. It's only if you're not as talented as Cohen is that you have to behave nicely: genius follows its own rules.

I know it isn't 100% reliable but according to wikipedia : 'The song refers to the "naivety and narcissism" of the West German Red Army Faction, "...designer terrorism by celebrity terrorists, as much about radical chic as about real politics."'
So it's more about post-war Germany than wartime Germany - if wiki can be believed.
@alstaniforth Yes, I read that too. Only way to actually find out is ask The Man himself. Could be about a daytrip to the coast to see the sea and the gulls, as far as we know.
Therefore, Germany was not obligated to declare War against us. Yet, he did. The only time he decrlared War against any other /Nation during WWII. If he hadn't, we probably still wouldn't have declared against him. Unless he fought alongside Japan against us. Which they never did, I don't believe. The bomb was originally meant for Germany. Finally, there was no great debate whether to use the bomb. Other than worrying it might be too big an explosion. Why would there be?
@unabnats Genau. Hitler did FDR the biggest favor by declaring war. I think after the Howler(world cup term is appropriate) at Stalingrad with the 6th Army, that Hitler knew it was over(everyone else did). The maniac simply wanted a bigger catastrophe. It sounds crazy but I believe it. Regarding the A-bomb, of course it was correct to use it. Hindsight is so easy. There were still young radicals in Japan that wanted to kill the Emperor and continue. It had to be done.
We did not declare War against Germany after Pearl Harbor. Germany was sinking our ships before Pearl /harbor. We (US) discovered plans for the occupation of South America by Germany before Pearl Harbor. Japan attacked Guam, Philippines among other US territory on Dec. 8th. I doubt even Roosevelt would let Phillipines fall on purpose. We did not know we would win WWII. If Russia fell, we might not have. Japan did not declare War against Russia. @unabnats Japan attacked the USSR in July 1938. That fell within the time frame of WWII if you count Asian battles. Had Japan been successful, it would have continued. I completely agree though that the U.S. needed Russia to stay alive. Russia never faced less than 70% of German forces. Usually much more. This seems to not be recognized by many Americans, glad that you do. Danke. I think the U.S. knew, at least deep down, that it would win no matter what. Just helped that Russia was there.

LC really does look like Spock. I thought Spock was in an Obsession commercial at first. Is this song really about fashion? I'm just going to pretend it's some kind of stewie griffin/antichrist anthem cause that's more fun.

LC really does look like Spock. I thought Spock was in an Obsession commercial at first. Is this song really about fashion? I'm just going to pretend it's some kind of stewie griffin/antichrist anthem cause that's more fun.
