  • I came across this song in a book I am reading (Son Of Hamas). It's strange to imagine hearing this song being played endlessly at times, recieving interrogation and torture at a Palestinan/Israeli prison. . . awful descriptions accompanied by an awesome song.

  • Very good song!

  • « even though he was built to see the world this way, he was also built to disregard, to be free of the way he was built to see the world »

  • Having first heard Leonard Cohen in a school common room in 1969 he has been a great source of pleasure to me ever since. Fantastic lyrics, beautiful music, thank you for your creativity and excellent musicality, you are a unique star.

  • I saw Mr Cohen in Melbourne in November last year for the first time since becoming a fan in 1974. It was an amazing show. I heard he lost a lot of do re mi in the crash and it was the reason he decided to tour again. I don't care. It was one of the five concert highlights of my life.

  • THIS MAN IS THE BEST EXAMPLE FOR EVERY ARTIST AND PUBLIC FIGURES , NOT DRUG ADDICTS LIKE [ELVIS,MJ,] LEONARD COHEN ONLY MADE A BETTER SOCIETY

  • @avidan39

I think he did have his moments - he is only human after all, like the rest of us. What was his poison, you will have to ask him.

  • @avidan39 The man has his own demons and always had. closertofiftythanyew is right I guess.

  • @avidan39 Don't mean to be rude - Cohen IS the exemplar of people who made a better society - but he used to be known as Captain Mandrax, and his history of substance, er, Enjoyment, is well known. If you're brilliant, you can improve society while ignoring its mores. It's only if you're not as talented as Cohen is that you have to behave nicely: genius follows its own rules.

  • @probabilissimus well said :)

  • @avidan39 Listen to Enrique Morente's cover of this song and enjoy...

  • @avidan39 atually, he took quite a few drugs in his youth. the trick is to stop in time.

  • @avidan39 actually, he took quite a few drugs in his youth. the trick is to stop in time.

  • @catyule13 nah the trick is to do more and more till you die

  • @RandyLahey911 nah the trick is to do so many you live forever.

  • @avidan39 ...just like your not a very good example with your angst...show some compassion and stop looking to others to lead you... "REPENT REPENT I WONDER WHAT THEY MEANT"

  • @avidan39

LEONARD COHEN ONLY MADE A BETTER SOCIETY

dial a cliche you cunt retard

  • THIS IS FARAWAY ABOVE THE CHEAP MUSIC PLAYED BY THE VERY BIG NAMES [ELVIS,MJ] THIS IS SMART MUSIC

  • he was a great folk songwritter and writter too. this album is quite representating of the eighties, and even if it's not my favorite it's a quite good albulm a little bit too eighties...maybe. my favorite album is new skin for the old ceremony, and i really love song of love and hate. But all his album deserve to be listen

  • @powerotoc WAS?

  • ...ah don't like your fashion business mister. : )

  • I thought I was completely ignorant of him. I didn't know that I knew so many of his songs. What are his better albums?

  • @toddandhisdog I started with Various Positions and worked my way up. The ones I didn't like at first soon become favourites. If you like him, take a look at Tom Waits too. (with an open mind;)

  • @moyadapne I ain't saying Various Positions was HIS first....just mine. (Before I get shot down by the experts).

  • I am still stunned that I know so much of his work and only now do I realise how prolific his talent is. Awesome discovery thanks to your posting this. I can't thank you enough for opening the door for me. Thanks for the Tom Waits tip, but I'v already been a huge fan for years. I had Franks Wild Years as a young'un and loved it while friends didn't get it. nearly 20 years later, Heart Attack & Vine, Bone Machine and Mule Variations are all on the MP3 player too.

  • God Bless Leonard Cohen.

  • this is a very interesting song.

    how creative artist is he!

  • TUNE.

  • Yea! Take DC..BO is a disaster and a communist.

  • you all do know this song is all about the trains to aushvitz, etc,? heathens to reality

  • @closertofiftythanyew

I know it isn't 100% reliable but according to wikipedia : 'The song refers to the "naivety and narcissism" of the West German Red Army Faction, "...designer terrorism by celebrity terrorists, as much about radical chic as about real politics."'

So it's more about post-war Germany than wartime Germany - if wiki can be believed.

  • @alstaniforth Yes, I read that too. Only way to actually find out is ask The Man himself. Could be about a daytrip to the coast to see the sea and the gulls, as far as we know.

  • This song is asociated to a very special period of my life........ unforgetable

  • Leonard Cohen should be studied as one of the main poets in XX century.

    Just the poet!

  • El Rey de la música británica...

  • Very cleva song about opening a reastaurant in Manhattan and then also in Berlin and dominating the industry .Cleva!

  • favorite part 0:00- 5:47 leonard cohen=beethoven=piaf

  • n the three fates weep...death to the pigs..

  • Therefore, Germany was not obligated to declare War against us. Yet, he did. The only time he decrlared War against any other /Nation during WWII. If he hadn't, we probably still wouldn't have declared against him. Unless he fought alongside Japan against us. Which they never did, I don't believe. The bomb was originally meant for Germany. Finally, there was no great debate whether to use the bomb. Other than worrying it might be too big an explosion. Why would there be?

  • @unabnats Genau. Hitler did FDR the biggest favor by declaring war. I think after the Howler(world cup term is appropriate) at Stalingrad with the 6th Army, that Hitler knew it was over(everyone else did). The maniac simply wanted a bigger catastrophe. It sounds crazy but I believe it. Regarding the A-bomb, of course it was correct to use it. Hindsight is so easy. There were still young radicals in Japan that wanted to kill the Emperor and continue. It had to be done.

  • We did not declare War against Germany after Pearl Harbor. Germany was sinking our ships before Pearl /harbor. We (US) discovered plans for the occupation of South America by Germany before Pearl Harbor. Japan attacked Guam, Philippines among other US territory on Dec. 8th. I doubt even Roosevelt would let Phillipines fall on purpose. We did not know we would win WWII. If Russia fell, we might not have. Japan did not declare War against Russia. It never attacked Russia during the War.

  • @unabnats Japan attacked the USSR in July 1938. That fell within the time frame of WWII if you count Asian battles. Had Japan been successful, it would have continued. I completely agree though that the U.S. needed Russia to stay alive. Russia never faced less than 70% of German forces. Usually much more. This seems to not be recognized by many Americans, glad that you do. Danke. I think the U.S. knew, at least deep down, that it would win no matter what. Just helped that Russia was there.

  • Watchmen!!!!

  • why did they cut the head of of john the baptiste once he returned and and spoke not

  • Gosh, this song is just amazing. Its a debate between this song or Hallejuah as my favorite. Both great songs from an amazing artist!

  • I found the one thing that makes up for Canada's mistake of having Justin Beiber. Leonard Cohen, you are awesome. That is an understatement of course.

  • @JohnBrentMachina Don't use Leonard's name in the same sentence as that other dude's name :p Leonard is my god!

  • @crusiatusblack amen brother! I have never cared to chase movie stars (they all look short in real life). However, I'd love to sit for a cup of coffee and hear this man speak. I feel blessed to live in the same time span as Leonard Cohen. I've seen ever show I could and have been moved each time.

  • @aminevich Amen! The words of this man are golden.

  • Chill out it is just a song. there is no Pearl Harbor nor Roosevelt nor Yanks nor whatever CRAP you guys want to talk about instead of listening to the song.

  • Very cohen - dark, sexy and brilliantly written and sung - possibly his greatest

  • first we work for satin then we by our feredom

  • @TheFriedLiverAttack Hate to ask, but is English your 3rd, or your 4th language?

  • @HolyMotherofGrid no its before recorded history... get it your holoaust and your inqusition is nothing... except what saint paul said... paradise fell...do you remember? the end of all >

  • @TheFriedLiverAttack ok........ he says, slowly backing away from the insanity of the "virtual world", lol!!

  • This songs send shivers up my spine!!! Brilliant =:)

  • I literally cannot put into words how much love and respect I have for this man's lyrics

  • yuo are the best leonard cohen

  • @isabel9004 "it"s young free and single?

  • So you are a rapist/ Asshole.

  • The song refers to the "naivety and narcissism" of the West German Red Army Faction, "...designer terrorism by celebrity terrorists, as much about radical chic as about real politics."

No one would write anything nowadays with such a theme, obviously this specific topic is out of date, but it's still so awesome =]

  • nice

  • Love it!!!!!

  • Manhattan is in SO MUCh TROUBLE.

  • LC really does look like Spock. I thought Spock was in an Obsession commercial at first. Is this song really about fashion? I'm just going to pretend it's some kind of stewie griffin/antichrist anthem cause that's more fun.

  • Leonard Cohen is like an English-speaker's Serge Gainsbourg. Simply fantastic.
