Thanks for demo-- Looks nice- One question though, How do you upgrade different applications (e g firefox or skype) ? Do you need to uninstall or re-install them again from App Store? if this is the case, all the personal setting will disappear
Okay I just tested out Presto myself, and yes it boots up fast and shuts down fast. Of course the first boot up takes a little longer, but after that boot time on my laptop - from choosing Presto on the bootup screen to having the desktop fully loaded - is about 8 seconds, and shutdown is about the same. And MP3s play out of the box in RealPlayer 11. For those who wanna just surf the web and watch YouTube videos and listen to MP3, this is actually a pretty decent OS.
Xandros Presto looks like it uses XFCE as the desktop environment...the file manager looked like Thunar. Sort of like "Xandros Meets Xubuntu Meets Wubi", since Presto installs sort of like Wubi.
I did try Presto, install went quick enough, boots really quickly, everything working, but found it was a bit too locked down for my liking, however I think its OK for a Linux novice.
BTW fave distro here is Ubuntu.
For those complaining about the modest $20 price tag. Yes GNU/Linux is a free operating system. But that 'free' means freedom as in 'free speech' and necessarily 'free beer' :). Software costs money to develop and support.
Actually, I switched to Ubuntu when I discovered a hardware bug in Xandros 4 which made my laptop think it was running 1/10th of the CPU's actual speed...the same thing happened on my desktop.
No way Ubuntu can boot in 10 seconds, not even with a fresh install. This is supposed to be a quick boot OS, for people in a hurry to have as a second OS or for people with little knowledge about computers to be able to use. I wouldn´t pay the 20 bucks but I guess it is an ok price for this useful aplication.
On what computer? softpedia (reliable) had a computer ext4 filesystem which is better than jaunty's ext3 default system and it booted in 21.4 seconds...
$20!!!!!!! How dare they charge even 20 cents! Linus Torvalds released the Linux kernel under the express condition that anyone could use or modify it so long as it stayed FREE!
Wifi setup we found was done automatically on the two laptops we tried Presto on. Just had to find the network icon, enter our WPA pass phrase and we was online.
The 'Free' part of Free Open Source Software, means freedom to use it, study it, modify it, and redistribute it. It's does not necessarily mean free of cost.
I tried this on our HP AMD Quad-Core with 64 Bit Vista and Presto is AWESOME! I get a little error, but it continues with boot... And boots in less than 10 seconds!!! And you can browse the web and stuff. This is very nice to have when you use Vista!
I have an EEE too.. but can't find something that boots faster than the hibernation of win7 (didnt use this feature before so maybe its quick on xp/vista too).

U can make Ubuntu live CD and it's instant too. It's slow though when u boot OS from DVD, but as an emergency solution it works.
TheCheshireCat86 2 years ago
It's not instant, no matter how fast your drive is. And also it's not really that helpfull for netbooks that DON'T HAVE A CD DRIVE...

i disagree with xandros 100% you should not have to pay for linux. but 19.00 aint bad.

I had my eye on this. It looks neat but I don't think I would purchase it. Waiting a little bit longer for Windows to boot ain't so bad...
BTW, what theme is that for XP??? It looks even better than the zune theme. :)

Theres a topic on the official forum that details how to make things minimize just like in windows :D Just search customize presto on their forum.

No way! 8 seconds?
Velo boots that same time with GUI. Without GUI it can be up and running in about 3 seconds. Record is 2.4 seconds.
Dojan5 2 years ago
I don't think it's a competition ;)
but compared to vista even this is super...
jkkmobile 2 years ago
Sorry. But I always get a little over my head when it comes to boot times. Especially if my OS proves quick.
Dojan5 2 years ago
Great video as always. Presto looks nice but how easy is it to get rid of if you were to decide it wasn't for you?
ShaneSGC 2 years ago
it uninstalls same way as installs... click uninstall icon :) easy

That's fantastic! I'll have to grab the beta now :P
Thanks for the quick reply!
