Parachutes can and have taken tails off planes before and when that happens its a split second between stable flight and complete loss of controll combine that with a full load of skydivers and they would be lucky to get anyone out alive.

For those that think they didn't "try to help", the best thing they could've done was push him out. It's what you're taught to do if someones pilot chute comes out before exit unless you have time to jump on it. He looked fine, probably chopped it, had a fun reserve ride, and owed some beer when he landed. Blue skies!!

@TheWebcamcomedy The best thing they can do is get the heck out ASAP. Proper procedures would be to push the jumper out of the plane. If you are inside the plane when your parachute goes out the door you will most likey be pulled into the rear of the door and that will cause the side of the plane to get ripped out. Reason for everyone to bail is to lighten the load on the aircraft and make it easier for pilots to control until jumper can get free. This was at the WFFC, everyone was OK.

@joerover22 They exited because of the tail strike (and it was jump run anyway). Parachutes around tails of aircraft have braught them down many times before and exiting from a plane with a damaged or removed tail can be extremely violent and difficult. The safest and best thing to do is exit imediately which they did. There is nothing anyone on board the plane could have done to help the guy, the only thing he could do (which he did do) is cutaway and use his reserve.

Nice video!. At slow speed can be noted that his pilot chute remains in the container while the main container flies away. We must remember to check more frequently the conditions and tension of the main container loop, and not to try to extend the loop life because it can cost the life of jumpers, pilot, or the plane since it can loose the control.

@MrPotatoes11 it didnt. He was using a BOC throw out pilot chute and not a ripcord, his pilot chute remained stowed. His main bag fell out of the container which extracted his main parachute and finaly his pilot chute. The most obvious reason for this was a lose or worn closing loop as in the loop holding the main container closed either broke or dislodged in the plane.

Probably one of the best experiences you could ever have.

Out of 2 million jumps per year, there are on average 20-30 deaths. Most of which are caused by human error. Not malfunctions with equipment.

That's why you do a pin check in the plane RIGHT BEFORE YOU JUMP. It seems as if his pin wasn't secured, which is why the container opened and his pilot chute deployed. (Effectively deploying the main in the process!) Rule to remember: If it doesn't look like a smiley face (If the pin doesn't point up towards the reserve) fix it! Don't take any shortcuts when it comes to packing and checking!

That being said, I hope the guy is okay! Hopefully he had the sense to cut away and fly the reserve!

The pin holding his parachute in the container must have been pushed loose in the plane. You can see the bag holding the parachute come out first with the pilot chute still stowed in place, then the bag pulls out the pilot chute. This is why we should always check our pins before we leave the plane.
