Yeah Darius, I dont know how you can make a case that the Germania of Roman times has no connection to modern Germany. It was Germans, ancestors of today's residents of Deutschland and Great Britain, who defeated the three legions and forever halted the Roman Empire at the Rhein.
The alliance of Germanic tribes you call COWARDS were fighting for their homeland. Everything that's necessary to defend ones homeland against the aggression of a superior foe is also appropriate. And so did Arminius. Would you call Czech, French, Polish etc. members of the resistance in World War 2 COWARDS? They also had no other way to fight against the Nazis than ambushes and bombing. More COWARDISH acts a superior might that attacks small countries.
Thank God, or better: thank Tiwaz, history shows repeatedly that the fight for freedom and homeland was often won by the Davids and not by the Goliaths.
look...i'm not arguing he was wrong...of course he was right defending his land...all i'm saying is that he wasn't much better than the romans if you see how he acted and you are confirming that...so i wouldn't call him hero (in the romantic meaning) ;)
"look...i'm not arguing he was wrong...of course he was right defending his land...all i'm saying is that he wasn't much better than the romans"
Arminius was a former officer of the roman
army, he wanted to unify german tribes and
make himself a german king, that´s why he was murdered some time after the great victory
over Rome´s legions. It was still to early in time for such an idea. Germanians were proud tribal people and considered themselves as free men, they didn´t accept a king.
Arminius believed in Rome at first. He joined the Roman army and fought in the Balkans. When he saw what Roman "government" and occupation was really like in Germany, he decided then to fight against Rome. But he knew the odds against him. So he planned his opening battle in the best way possible. He did the right thing, in the right way, at the right time.
What are you on - progressing loss of reality most likely... I F somebody slaughtered women and children, then it were the heavily armed Roman legions. They ambushed the tribe of the Marsi - and the Romans even did it cowardly AT NIGHT. Also, the Roman ways to fight the Cimbri & Teutoni were anything but heroic - they pretended to negotiate with Theutobold, only to lure him into a trap - nothing of an open battle....
Arminius if i don't recall wrong, was working with roman as officer and there he learned the way romans act in battle. After that he betrayed them and kill them all in a deadly trap hiding in the bush as a snake and not in an open field. he killed hundreds of woman and children not only the legions....i wouldn't call him a hero. ;)
You are absolutely right. However, we didn't call him a hero but a "liberator" and he let the Romans also in this movie in a trap. Clearly he is, if not the good, but the better guy in this flick. Since this movie is mainly entertainment and not really historicaly accurate, you shouldn't be to harsh with this Arminius ;)
oh ok but tell me. what's the connection between arminius and suisse? by the way his real name was probably sigfridhuz, arminius was the latin name (according to the historicians)one of the destroyed legions came from my town (Pisa middle Italy) see ya switzerlander

Ancient Germany is not like Germany today.
Ancient Germany was a barbarian country and Romans started a war against Germans because they are barbarians and uncivilized people.
But Germans today are completely differents. It is absurd to regard Arminius as a "german" hero.

Germans of that time are NOT germans of nowadays: only in english they are called in the same way:
in italian we say Germania for the country,
GERMANI, the barbarians who lived there
and TEDESCHI the germans of nowadays

Yes they where their ancestors. But they were the same people with german as their language.

Not really, many other German tribes later mass migrated into other parts of Europe such as France and left forever.

But the thing about Arminius was that he lied to the Romans that he's loyal to them and tricked them into an ambush.
