Hey guys, I just did a cover of this song and I'd really appreciate if you'd go take a look at my channel and maybe some other covers! Thanks in advance!
P.s I we are talking guitarists, my list is Jukka Tolonen,Philip Catherine, Dan Ar Braz,Richard Thompson,Brent Mason. Corrado Rustici, John Mclaughlin to name but a few
@darktrhone63 vinnie moore is amazing, i saw him at a clinic at a local music shop, after watching him play with carmine appice i went home and practiced for hours, hes a major influence on why i play guitar.
@kustriani Hey , rating guitarists isn't a hobby for me . I listen to Vai a lot and I know that their styles of playing are different . So obviously I didn't 'rate' Govan and Vai in that comment , you can't compare guitarists who play two different styles . I only wrote that comment because I like Govan's music more than Vai's .
i share a music class with a few fuckwits who give really stereotypical thoughts towards people who do play fast and just accept them as mindless shredders like gurthrie here , its ignorant people like that you have to feel sorry for because they really dont know the meaning of feeling and expression in no matter what speed you play- guthrie is truly an amazing guitarist
Jerry Garcia, Eric Johnson, Guthrie Govan, Frank Zappa, and several others I'm too high to name atm. They're all some of the greatest guitarists that have ever lived.
Wow, This raises the hairs on my neck and also inspires me to wanna pick up my guitar even though it's 12:24am. Guthrie, thank you for making slides cool.

There is a demo version of this song recorded back in 1993 (search ''Waves 1993'') and it took Govan more than 13 years to do a studio version of this tune. He had these ideas for songs more than 13 years and he didn't want to rush... That's called PATIENCE. Now, 18 years later, these song ideas are still IN and definitely don't sound ''cliche''... He's a genius. :)
please help me. i want to have this album. the songs are absolutely fantastic, but i can´t find a website on which i can find "erotic cakes". the link on top doesn´t work.
@1empathy thanks a lot. i´ve written a mail to them, but at the moment it seems to be sold out. someone sells it at amazon, but for 300 pound :) i think, that´s a bit too much for me
The dick measurements between virtuoso guitarists in these comments is hilarious. Petrucci, Satch, Vai, and GG are all incredible guitarists with their own strengths.
I will say one thing though: none of those other guitarists can improvise like Guthrie can. You can give this dude any crazy chord progression and he'll turn it into a thing of beauty.
'Hey dad... you still have the receipt for my new guitar?' 'Yeah... why?' 'Gonna take it back I give up.' 'Oh but you are really quite good.' 'Listen to this guy Dad...' (5 minutes and 9 seconds later) 'Shall I get you a triangle instead?' haha.
I think that he is a monster, but he is not the best because there is no one best. I prefer Alex (personal opinion) but he is a damn God. Malmsteen was the best at early 80´s and he is a repetitive douchebag right now. He was a God and actually he is a Gold Idol (and also fat xD). For example i think JP is so good as Guthrie or maybe better than him, he has the same technique he controls all strange time signatures and he composes marvelous progressive music and dominates the 7 strings. Two Gods
@MrGuitarMadness95 ONLY IDIOT GUY SAYING JP IS BETTER THAN GUTHRIE.........GUTHRIE IS 1000000000000000000000000000000000000 TIMES BETTER THAN THAT BORING ALTERNATE PICKER JP
@hanifabidin90 No one is better than the other one you wanker. Different styles and also different playing between them. Have you heard Lines in the sand, Lost without you or Kindred spirits? They´re all the way really soulful solos. You´re a douchebag because you don´t take care about accepting other people´s preferences so people won´t take care of you.
there are 3 types of guitar players (IMO), those who give up after these vids and never improve, those that get inspired and get damn good, and those that dont watch stuff on youtube cuz they're practicing and they become guys like this
@ImmolateThyLord okay, your wrong in 3 ways. those 3 ways are petrucci, vai, and satch. They are all amazing guitarists. compared to guthrie, they are all amazing in their own ways. Guthrie is like all of those 3 in a way. He combinds all of their best assets and puts it into 1 basically, but those 3 do their best assets better than guthrie. Meaning Petrucci 10pts, guthrie has 7-8 of the 10 in that category and the same for the other 2. Yngwie, shouldn't be considered a guitarist but a shredder.
Personally, I think though they sound similar, Yngwie, John Petrucci, Satch, and Guthrie are all like way different plays in their own respects. But that's just me. They're all amazing for different reasons.
This guy is not a shredder, just like Charlie Parker, he can rip it up but is just a musician playing what he feels. A shredder is someone who is purposely playing fast for show. I highly doubt he thinks he's the best or fastest guitar player in the world so why claim he is or is not. He's an artist!
@OpethToolMetallica the rhythm in this may not be very interesting admittedly but check out sevens or erotic cakes or uncle snunk. those are a lot more rythmically intersting
@ImmolateThyLord as much as I love Steve Vai, I must submit to your comment. This guy can do anything really. His fusion is just lovely. He would be my king of guitarists so to speak, even though I do not like thinking that way, because each guitarist brings their own style, phrasing, etc, but this guy is never seems over-repetitious.
I remember Guthrie doing a masterclass at my school last year , we had an Yngwie DVD running on the lounge hall TV screen in the cafeteria....he sat and enjoyed the stuff with that childish guitar nerd dreamy look in his eyes and said like : "Guys , no matter what people say...Yngwie plays each note like it was the last note in the world, and THAT is what we shud all try to do !" ....such a huge guitarist , and such a dedicated music fan ! <3
@ImmolateThyLord I agree. He is an absolute God at guitar. Just how he composes his songs, doing the tricks he does. Every second of his playing is impossible to criticize. love it. Petrucci and Guthrie all the way.
@dorielementary No offense, but Daniele Gottardo has got nothing on Guthrie. I love listening to both, but Gottardo still has a really immature style, it has TONS of potential, but when I listen to it, I get REALLY bored at all the shredding that he does... it's almost like that's the only thing he can do.
@XAlphaZEROX Sounds like you have not heard his album. It is waaaay more mature than any of what Guthrie does. Gottardo can play jazz. Guthrie only dabbles on the fringes of jazz. Gottardo is also just far more original and has his own voice. Guthrie is great at mimicking other people's styles but really has no identifiable sound he has made his own just yet.
@dorielementary "has no identifiable sound he has made his own just yet." are you being serious, i have not heard any guitarist that sounds like Guthrie. He is, in my eyes the most unique and identifiable guitarist to have ever stepped on this planet
I'm not sure about him having more "quicky tricks" than Vai, because that implies that music theory knowledge is "quicky tricks" and that Guthrie know more theory.
I love Guthrie, but more musically complex than Vai? Not quite. Also not quite as technique savvy as Petrucci, but he's still better than 99.9 percent of all guitarists ever in both those respects and I love his work immensely, but not quite ready to topple Vai and Petrucci at their claims to fame.
From a guitarist point of view, Guthrie is by far one of the most talented players of all time hands down. His technique is amazing - He came to my college and played a few of his tracks before, and trust me when i say his fret board skill live would blow your mind... But from a listeners point of view - i would say that sometimes Guthrie does too much in his tracks which narrows down his target audience to musicians only, as opposed to Satch where anyone can feel the emotion of his melodies
@MotherLickerz I think you are hearing what you want to hear and not what there is to be heard. You find Guthrie to be overly technical for the standard listener but what you aren't taking into consideration is that the average listener will still feel a complex beat, that's why it is a beat. This music can put down a very serious and simple vibe if you want it to, or it can be a complex piece of art that you have yet to find every meaning to. Regardless its still a good beat with a calm melody.
@MotherLickerz Well screw everyone else, then. Guthrie can do what he wants as an artist - it doesn't diminish his music in the least that he chooses compositional complexity over mass appeal. People need to get rid of this notion that "good art is universally understood", because it isn't. Art caters to the audience it chooses to, just as it expresses what it chooses to. What qualifies it is how well it does what it's meant to do, whatever that may be.
@MotherLickerz While I see where you're coming from, I completely disagree. It doesn't matter how many times I listen to Erotic Cakes, I can feel the emotions coming from each and every note. I remember the shivers I had when I first listened to it... Oh, great times.
@MotherLickerz You might be right about the narrow audience, but I don't really mind or care. I think it's amazing the way it is! Everytime he pours out this enormous flow of emotion over me, it's mindblowing!
@MotherLickerz I've seen him live last week... couldn't be more true! He's just Amazing with a capital "A". I've seen Satch live, and it's hard to compare both of 'em. But in my heart, Guthrie comes first =P . Erotic Cakes has a great balance between shred, musicality, feel and simplicity (harmonically talking). Satch is a freakin' great player, but I feel Guthrie's music is more "alive"
But it's just an opinion ;)
Have you heard him with "The Aristocrats"? It's... well you gotta hear it! Hah
@MotherLickerz I totally agree. there are very few people that appreciate this music simply for listening quality, most of us are amazed by the skill level. I completely love the sound, but it would be different if I didn't understand the level of professionalism. It's a weird thing how perspective changes everything, it doesn't matter what you do.
Don't people realize that there is no point debating guitarist's skills? These people are who they are, no one is a "god". Guthrie is amazing but he's just a guy, people.
@ImmolateThyLord Ahh, I've been waiting for you, Satriani. We meet again at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you I was but the learner. Now I am the master: I find your lack of faith disturbing.
' He's good, not as quick as Yng, not as quirky as Steve Vai, not a technical as Petrrci, and not as cool a song writer as Satch-but he's good, though he needs to focus on his own style. Ju my 2 cents:)
@rmsolympic1 Normally I don't like comparing guitarists (since I'm a huge fan of all of the names mentioned), but Guthrie Govan is so unique in the fact that he can play ALL those styles almost perfectly. There's actually a video of him copying all the greatest guitar players in one go and except for the tone, note choice and phrasing is spot on. He's our modern Shawn Lane.
@XAlphaZEROX You make some good points, but I still want to see him focus more on his own style. As for the vid you refered to, it's amazing, but it doesn't outdo the copied guitarists in their ability to project their unique voices. And I don't see him as a modern Shawn Lane per se, though I definitely think that he has an influence similar to Lane, though Lane's stature was - at least for now - larger than Govan's. I am not bashing him but simply offereing another perspective.
@rmsolympic1 Is it just that the album Erotic Cakes is diverse that it doesn't really suit you? I can understand that... because even though the album is labeled as a "fusion" album, it really has other influences into it unlike something like Greg Howe's Introspection which is solely Fusion Rock or Yngwie Malmsteen's Attack! which is Neo-classical. I can see how it would slightly disgruntle someone who really wants just one type of music.
@rmsolympic1 No, not disgruntled. I really like some stuff on cakes. I coulda used more tunes like waves though, which i figure is probly definitively him per se. The album seemed to me a display of what he can do stylistically, as well as a snapshot of a man obsessed with different musical styles. Still, just because he can play all those styles does not make him - for me, at least - the greatest guitarist, let alone the greatest musician, on planet earth.
@rmsolympic1 OH MAN, just because you doesnt like Guthrie once, when you only seen him in video when he shreds, and after you listen to his album you doesnt wanna change your argument.........I'm often meet stubborn people like you..........okay, were not saying about greatest musician on earth, we just talk about how great guthrie is as a musician............but your stubborn brain probably dont wanna admit it..........
@hanifabidin90 Oh, man, you doesn't have to misunderstand me once. When you read only part my statements, you will not gets my points. After you listen to my argument, which that I lie some stuff of his and some is merely okay, you will not talk noise. Oh, man, you must read all my statements

@ImmolateThyLord I agree. He is an absolute God at guitar. Just how he composes his songs, doing the tricks he does. Every second of his playing is impossible to criticize. love it. Petrucci and Guthrie all the way.

@ImmolateThyLord He has nothing on Daniele Gottardo though.
dorielementary 6 months ago
@dorielementary No offense, but Daniele Gottardo has got nothing on Guthrie. I love listening to both, but Gottardo still has a really immature style, it has TONS of potential, but when I listen to it, I get REALLY bored at all the shredding that he does... it's almost like that's the only thing he can do.
XAlphaZEROX 6 months ago
@XAlphaZEROX Sounds like you have not heard his album. It is waaaay more mature than any of what Guthrie does. Gottardo can play jazz. Guthrie only dabbles on the fringes of jazz. Gottardo is also just far more original and has his own voice. Guthrie is great at mimicking other people's styles but really has no identifiable sound he has made his own just yet.
dorielementary 6 months ago
@dorielementary "has no identifiable sound he has made his own just yet." are you being serious, i have not heard any guitarist that sounds like Guthrie. He is, in my eyes the most unique and identifiable guitarist to have ever stepped on this planet

@ImmolateThyLord

I got to see this with The Aristocrats! It was amazing!! Marco Minnemann and Bryan Beller tear this song up
Fruitcake68 7 months ago
From a guitarist point of view, Guthrie is by far one of the most talented players of all time hands down. His technique is amazing - He came to my college and played a few of his tracks before, and trust me when i say his fret board skill live would blow your mind... But from a listeners point of view - i would say that sometimes Guthrie does too much in his tracks which narrows down his target audience to musicians only, as opposed to Satch where anyone can feel the emotion of his melodies
MotherLickerz 7 months ago 34
@MotherLickerz i know what you're saying man, but i don't think there are many non guitarists/musicians listening to satriani either.
Beatsmith2005 7 months ago
@MotherLickerz I think you are hearing what you want to hear and not what there is to be heard. You find Guthrie to be overly technical for the standard listener but what you aren't taking into consideration is that the average listener will still feel a complex beat, that's why it is a beat. This music can put down a very serious and simple vibe if you want it to, or it can be a complex piece of art that you have yet to find every meaning to. Regardless its still a good beat with a calm melody.
TheOldSchoolCrisis 6 months ago 2
@MotherLickerz Well screw everyone else, then. Guthrie can do what he wants as an artist - it doesn't diminish his music in the least that he chooses compositional complexity over mass appeal. People need to get rid of this notion that "good art is universally understood", because it isn't. Art caters to the audience it chooses to, just as it expresses what it chooses to. What qualifies it is how well it does what it's meant to do, whatever that may be.

@MotherLickerz thrut :D man i listen tpo all of them and now i understand guthrie..after 2 years profesionaly playing guitar
joja93x 4 months ago
@MotherLickerz While I see where you're coming from, I completely disagree. It doesn't matter how many times I listen to Erotic Cakes, I can feel the emotions coming from each and every note. I remember the shivers I had when I first listened to it... Oh, great times.
NeverLandQM 3 months ago
@MotherLickerz You might be right about the narrow audience, but I don't really mind or care. I think it's amazing the way it is! Everytime he pours out this enormous flow of emotion over me, it's mindblowing!
Foodie88 3 months ago
@MotherLickerz I've seen him live last week... couldn't be more true! He's just Amazing with a capital "A". I've seen Satch live, and it's hard to compare both of 'em. But in my heart, Guthrie comes first =P . Erotic Cakes has a great balance between shred, musicality, feel and simplicity (harmonically talking). Satch is a freakin' great player, but I feel Guthrie's music is more "alive"
But it's just an opinion ;)
Have you heard him with "The Aristocrats"? It's... well you gotta hear it! Hah
steveauclairguitar 3 months ago
@MotherLickerz I totally agree. there are very few people that appreciate this music simply for listening quality, most of us are amazed by the skill level. I completely love the sound, but it would be different if I didn't understand the level of professionalism. It's a weird thing how perspective changes everything, it doesn't matter what you do.

@ImmolateThyLord Ahh, I've been waiting for you, Satriani. We meet again at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you I was but the learner. Now I am the master: I find your lack of faith disturbing.
rmsolympic1 10 months ago
' He's good, not as quick as Yng, not as quirky as Steve Vai, not a technical as Petrrci, and not as cool a song writer as Satch-but he's good, though he needs to focus on his own style. Ju my 2 cents:)
rmsolympic1 10 months ago
@rmsolympic1 Normally I don't like comparing guitarists (since I'm a huge fan of all of the names mentioned), but Guthrie Govan is so unique in the fact that he can play ALL those styles almost perfectly. There's actually a video of him copying all the greatest guitar players in one go and except for the tone, note choice and phrasing is spot on. He's our modern Shawn Lane.
XAlphaZEROX 7 months ago
@XAlphaZEROX You make some good points, but I still want to see him focus more on his own style. As for the vid you refered to, it's amazing, but it doesn't outdo the copied guitarists in their ability to project their unique voices. And I don't see him as a modern Shawn Lane per se, though I definitely think that he has an influence similar to Lane, though Lane's stature was - at least for now - larger than Govan's. I am not bashing him but simply offereing another perspective.
rmsolympic1 7 months ago
@rmsolympic1 Is it just that the album Erotic Cakes is diverse that it doesn't really suit you? I can understand that... because even though the album is labeled as a "fusion" album, it really has other influences into it unlike something like Greg Howe's Introspection which is solely Fusion Rock or Yngwie Malmsteen's Attack! which is Neo-classical. I can see how it would slightly disgruntle someone who really wants just one type of music.
XAlphaZEROX 7 months ago
@XAlphaZEROX It's a little elevator music-like in spots. Good player though.
dorielementary 6 months ago
@rmsolympic1 No, not disgruntled. I really like some stuff on cakes. I coulda used more tunes like waves though, which i figure is probly definitively him per se. The album seemed to me a display of what he can do stylistically, as well as a snapshot of a man obsessed with different musical styles. Still, just because he can play all those styles does not make him - for me, at least - the greatest guitarist, let alone the greatest musician, on planet earth.
rmsolympic1 7 months ago
@rmsolympic1 OH MAN, just because you doesnt like Guthrie once, when you only seen him in video when he shreds, and after you listen to his album you doesnt wanna change your argument.........I'm often meet stubborn people like you..........okay, were not saying about greatest musician on earth, we just talk about how great guthrie is as a musician............but your stubborn brain probably dont wanna admit it..........
hanifabidin90 4 months ago
@hanifabidin90 Oh, man, you doesn't have to misunderstand me once. When you read only part my statements, you will not gets my points. After you listen to my argument, which that I lie some stuff of his and some is merely okay, you will not talk noise. Oh, man, you must read all my statements
