  • Every yearI I watch this a few times. One of my favorites. Do you still have the origina on tape?. I wish we had it a little more HD on here. It seems to be getting blurrier... maybe i'm getting older.

  • He btw wrote "Heartbreaker" about his brief relationship with her. She then met Mickey Deans, a New York night club manager and moved to London with him where they married in march 1969..3 months before her death on 6/22/69.

  • I believe John Mayer wrote this. Judy had befriended him in the fall of 1968.

  • goodbye Judy and thanx ... You are unforgettable!

  • does anyone know who wrote this song??? so beautiful

  • Wow this may be my fav Judy clip it's tears me up her emotions just came out here wonderful poignant and sad! Judy I wish I had been born 50 years earlier and seen you live! Xxxxxx

  • Yes Judy, it was the best Christmas ever! I miss you so!

    Taffs

  • I watched this live when I was 18, and I cried my heart out then as now. Thank you, fabulous Judy. You are at peace at last, I hope.

  • as judy would say MARVELLOUS i f***ing love this woman

  • God Bless Her Always... she was a true artist and the biggest talent... there is no one that i admire more than her.

  • It may be depressing, but it is one of the great songs.

  • this is the most depressing XMas song ever

  • Torchy, touching & supremely soulful, Judy looks and sounds magnifcient and this wondrous legend knew how to rebound over and over...sadly gone six months later, this lasting performance is one to savor and enjoy...Bravo Judy!

  • Wow ! All I can say is Wow ! God bless you Judy !

  • Imagine being able to turn on the TV and watch this Legend? In one book I read a passage that at the Harry Reasoner the TV news anchor mentioned a few things that have changed for the soldiers returning after the end of the Conflict. He said the soldiers will be returning to a world where there was no Longer a Judy Garland in it. That was the impact this woman had on our world.

  • The greatest entertainer in the world--Judy Garland. Thanks for this post.

  • I keep hoping someone would finally post the whole Judy segment From Johnny's intro all the way thru her interview of her talking and singing. I enjoyed the June 25th 1968 Tonight Show although she didnt sing on that show she was a delight when she told all those funny stories.. I think Judy looked great on both shows.. even though she passed away the following year in 1969.

  • what year was this?

  • @wilburbonzo This aired December 17th 1968 one of Judy's last appearances on American Television. Her Last time on American television was on the Merv Griffin show later that December. Judy Once as a guest then as Guest host on Merv Griffin. One of those shows had Margaret Hamilton who played the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz.. Too bad they only have a bootlegged version but its silent footage of the Griffin show. I read Judy asked M.H. to do the evil laugh she did & Judy laughed so hard.

  • i think even the crass belated Johnny Carson was moved by this piece. classic song from Judy's "later" career. enough said.

  • Judy was not drunk, stop this inuendo please.

Watch carefully how she carries this sad and moving song.

No one is as brilliant interpreting these three minutes than Judy. This is a must see for any actor.

Phrasing and timing is dead on.

  • thank you.

  • Was it customary at this time, for guests to perform from their seat? Was she too weak/drunk to stand? Is it a technical issue?

  • Many performers at this time "sang from the chair" - it was orchestrated this way to give a feeling of intimacy and casualness to the viewer.

  • @MrThomashope On the same show, she sang another song on the stage and there was a chair she sat in there too... with a set behind her and a mike stand. I never saw that before. She was out of it.

  • o my god some one 98 pounds sat down to sing well, what about the song. drama, drama.

  • she sat on many stages to sing and on other tv shows, and too the others..she didnt write the song, she just sang it well.......

  • wow. a great talent and singer, but this song is one, sad song. yikes.

  • That sounds disturbingly like Liza Minelli...

  • in her dreams. with no nasel res. just throught.

  • Her singing "Merry Christmas" from her 1949 film In the Good old Summertime Is a very great Christmas song too. I wonder why no one has posted it this year.

  • Since this was posted I have watched it time and time again I am a singer and teach but have learned so much from this performance alone and so judy is still passing in her gems long after her leaving. Rest in peace Judy xx

  • I finally got to sing this song in a show (just before christmas) and still hats off to Judy, its not an easy song, especially for a man to sing in the same key, its still got a bit of a range on it, but shows how great she was at making it look so easy! love singing it though!

  • Its hard to believe as many TV appearances, concerts, etc and as talented as she was, that she was "drunk" or "wasted" as the legend tells, and too be able to remember as many lyrics and songs she knew...she gave us a lot...i think ppl need to relax on the other and focus on the great songs and shows she gave

  • Much agreed, thank you!

  • Something feels very final about this appearance. Maybe it's the fact that the song's arrangement is in so many minor chords. Beautiful and sad at the same time. God rest ye, Judy.

  • Musically she still commands my respect . . . "something" about her magic always endured!

  • I remember the first time this aired and remember thinking that she looked considerably better than she usually had at this time (her hairstyle here was a vast improvement over that severe upsweep that never flattered her). But it IS about the music and her delicate phrasing and knowledgeable shading was still evident. Thank You for posting this as well.

  • This is as haunting as Judy's version of "Happy New Year"--what a song, what a voice, and what a GENIUS. Thank you so much for sharing this.

  • It's as if she was saying goodbye to us. The tears are flowing-she gave us all she could right til hte absolute end. Thank you my dear Judy. . .

  • Was this Christmas 1968, her last holiday? If so, this song truly gives chill bumps....

  • @gootenslog It was

  • This is close to the last we will hear her and she does a spectacular job on this number.

  • I hope God is taking care of Judy now.

  • @Michaelbos GOD created all of us but he blessed Judy w/the Greatest voice of all time. The Capitol Record yrs esp between '55-'57 & then in '61 @ Carnegie Hall, her voice was @ its Zenith. It was rich & full no one w/so much powerin their voice like Judy. Judy IS the "VOICE" not Sinatra. Prime example, Carnegie Hall broke records. Everyone knows her voice whichis why She's remained unbeatable and Still " The World's Greatest Entertainer! " Thank you GOD for giving us Judy Garland!

  • @Michaelbos Of course...why not?

  • I love this song almost as much as have yourself a merry little Christmas. I do a fair version of Have yourself a Metrry Little Christmas on youtube. Thanks.

  • Judy was part of all in some ways .

She seems like a wonderful person and sometimes not very happy . Yet she tried to be as joyful as she could .She is still the smame little girl on wizard of oz to me .God Bless thank you for sharing :)

  • It is the best, I love Judy. and her last appearance on T.V. It is a gift to have her for this last time!!

  • how can a person get a copy of the entire show? it must exist in it's entirety.

  • i have it i got it on ioffer

  • May sound stupid: what is ioffer? would like to see the entire show/segment --thanks

  • thanks for the information-I got it-it's nice to see those interviews from 1968 on Carson's shows

  • ioffer

  • are* shes still here;)

  • I love this clip of Judy. It shows she had it right till the end. She died 6 mos. after this was shown. Her voice is deep and rich. As much as I love Liza, I've always thought Judy had a better voice--more range. Liza's of course, the survivor, it's too bad Judy didn't have the kind of help kicking her addictions, that Liza's had. We might still have her.

  • Garland was a supreme song stylist....even with the great voice fading away near the end of her life.....her musical phrasing & subtlety of approach in this performance is simply stunning...

    Luigi ~ nyc

  • stunning indeed

  • Too have been so frail, Judy was still very much in control of her performance. We all knew she couldn't last forever, yet her death a few months later shocked the world. Even many who had personally known her since the MGM days. There'll never be another entertainer like Judy Garland. Capitol Records should have followed her around, recording songs whenver possible. Stupid Capitol-ists!!!!

  • I have always loved the last decade of Judy`s life the most.... Because NOW she`s the woman, the soul, the singer..... all production values left behind at MGM and Warner.... no more tramp outfits.... Just those huge brown soulful eyes... she has been a part of me for 30 years.... and always will be... to coin a cliche; "when she sings.... she sings for ME.... and my soul..."

  • Whether you're a fan or not, it's a performance full of honesty. Rare in a time when most singers we see in the public forum have no idea the meaning behind the lyric they sing. She sang from the heart and bared her soul for the world to see. The simplicity and complexity of Judy's "conversation" happens more when she's not even singing (between phrases, during music interludes, etc.). Brilliant. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

  • Love everything about this clip

  • I was in the 9th grade, and a friend knew I liked Judy and told me he saw where she'd be on the Tonight Show that night. I stayed up to watch her. The following summer, her husband found her, dead, on the loo in their England home.

  • Miss Garland was the greatest singer ever born. She is my all-time favorite!!

  • A superstar is what you are watching. I preformer who never gives anything but their all for their audience. Judy gave that and more. God Rest her soul. I say all of her fans who watch these clips, should say one prayer each for thismarvelous woman's soul. I know I do at night. She part of my family. I grew up listening to her and wacthing her when most kids my age were into different music.LOL I was not a hermit. Judy had great taste in singers

  • All true, and I despise the negative comments about her. These people do not realize how hard she tried to beat her problems: she gave it her all, just as she did with her performances. Just think, if she had had the medicines then that we have now, she would most likely still be around. There is no one now in her league - perhaps Celine Dion might be close. Critique her singing if you must, but please - not illnesses that she did not ask for, tried to lick, and simply couldn't.

  • @bjobe1964 Exactly which medicines do you mean, to treat which diseases?

  • This is the Judy I love.... I love the way the used her gifts the last decade of her life.... she used her talents and emotions to the extreme during that period - and though others have done so as well - no one has captured that magic.... Well Liza has and does.... it`s in her genes.,,,, this was Judy`s last christmas by the way.... six months later she would be gone.....

  • Whenever I read the negative Posts of Judy and how ppl feel theyhave to bring up her personal problems, which we all have, is not fair. After Judy died everyone finally realized what the world Lost. When the Vietnam ended in 1975, 60 minute commentator said the Soldiers will be coming back to a world there was no long a Judy Garland. That is how talented this woman was and what she meant to the world.

  • AMEN. They make it sound like she asked for these illnesses. There were no real "medicines" for her in the 1960's - she tried so damn hard and handled it as best she could. At least her daughters allow these posts, they could claim copyright violations, but they never have done so. So don't you know it hurts them to see negative remarks about the personal problems of their mother? Liza leaves them so the world can still enjoy Judy and appreciate her talent.

  • is there anyone out there who knows if there is a posting of the entire show of Judy on the Tonight Show ?

  • would anybody know how to get an MP3 of this performance?

  • Judy = Perfection!

  • A Judy Garland fan can see through all her problems and just enjoy her.She was a human being like all of us but had something extra to communicate with everyone who hears her voice. She's mesmerizing.I became a huge fan at 6 yrs old. I was being punished for something and was crying, the tv was on, it was Liza intro Judy segment on That's Entertainment, I never heard her other than as dorothy. She soothed a little boy's heart and for that I will be forever grateful because I was that little boy.

  • thats a very nice comment

  • Oh, and I forgot - her phrasing is still FLAWLESS. I just hope that wherever she is, she's found the peace and happiness she deserves.

  • Even with her technical powers somewhat dimished here, the level of talent and emotional honesty is STAGGERING. The voice is rough in places but there are still beautiful tones here. She was simply the best.

  • biggeroo is a loser.......

  • One would have to have a dead heart to not understand the beauty of this performance or the greatness of this talent. Shut up, open your heart and LISTEN!

  • Tahnk you for posting this. So beautiful and sad!

  • The lady had it all.. love you Judy !!

  • Even firing on one cylander she is still the best.

  • The comments of bigeroo show the ugly side of anonymous commentary. Aside from being foolish , they're rude. A 'true musician' hearing this performance, I think, would be devastated by the talent producing it. It reminds me of some of Michelangelo's final sculptures, where the whole thing was not quite resolved or polished, but all the power and force and meaning remained to stun the observer. If there is a better performer than Judy Garland who ever existed I don't know who it could be.

  • Agreed 100%!!!

  • I do not understand criticism of Judy, especially in this performance. We all have a pinacle and then it is a long slow journey down: whoever you are. She may have been better, we all have been. She would be dead soon, but she did have to eat and she did have the will to try to go on........many entertainers should have quit sooner, but she could not. So you are a musician who finds this hard to listen to...she is and was and always will be....JUDY GARLAND....who in the hell are you??????

  • i love this woman

  • I love how Carson knows what a moment it was. He sat back with respect, and, by example, instructed the audience members to cast aside judgement and allow themselves to enter into and be moved by a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

I'll never forget when Bette Midler first appeared on his show. She was great, but HE was thrilling. She sang, sat down on the dais, and after a long pause, Carson said, quietly, "You are going to be a very big star."

  • Unless I miss my guess, this was December, 1968, Judy's last television appearance in America. It's as if she's begging her fans to just stay with her a little longer. This song is both tender and heartbreaking. Having spent many lonely and loveless Chritmases, it's something I can relate to. Facing Christmas alone is very hard, as I'm sure many can attest to. I think Judy knew what I go through, tho she died before I was born. She was nothing short of amazing. I love her still.

  • Even running on 1 cylander, she's still better than anyone.

  • Nope, wrong, sorry.

  • EXACTLY! This performance is sorry. AND it is wrong to showcase a legend when she is at rock bottom!

  • yes, bigeroo,....If this is your definition of 'rock bottom', may you hit it soon, You'll be swell!.....Garlands' 'rock bottom performance' must be the reason the studio audience, ( not usually known for unrestrained shouts of "Bravo!" ), &c., even Carson, and about 95% views here are more than positive. It's nice that you prefer the 'younger Garland'. Many clips here of her while still w/ the Gumm Siters,...Enjoy.

  • Biggeroo-Your comments are completely without merit. What do you mean by showcase? It was an apearance on the Tonight Show. She'd done many before. I saw as a teenager when it first aired. If we only had her here today at "Rock Bottom" as you say. There is nobody performing today that

can even come close to her as an artist. As the great Peggy Lee once said.

  • Comment removed

  • You really need to look at it for what it really was...a MIRACLE! She was so F*ucked up and still manages to give a performance that can tear your heart out. And while SITTING IN A CHAIR! Do you have any idea how difficult it is to sing while sitting down? Yes she was amazing when she was younger but even here she was still a star! As demonstrated by the audiences shouts and screams for more when she was done. I suggest you watch this again with a more open mind.

  • For you to make a comment like that means you no nothing about the greatness of Judy Garland. It is not a great song but she makes it magic. Flawless interpertation of a very weak song. If you can't hear that in her voice you don't deserve to listen to it.

  • Judy's interpretation of the song makes it, no doubt, but the song is not without merit. Having faced many lonely Christmases, I understand the sentiment of the song. There aren't too many Christmas songs that speak of this kind of emotion, and I'm glad this treasure has been uncovered.

  • To captainsmith. Thank-you for the e-mail. My first comments were in response to biggeroo. Yes I do agree with the very potential for loneliness during the Holidays and Judy understood everything deeply. I fortunately had the extrordinary gift of seeing her perform in person twice. She is

among the GIANTS of the ARTISTs of the 20th Century.

  • I love this clip, it shows her emotion and I think the tone of her voice is right on with the feel of the song. It is not always about perfect pitch, that makes a good singer; timing, phrasing, and emotion make the legend.

  • Wrong

  • The only mess here is your weird mid-sentence capitalization. Go elsewhere to some studio induced and enhanced pop stars youtube uploads.

  • Beautiful......

  • I wouldn't trust myself to listen to this during the holidays.

  • What a beautiful song. Waiff55 is right, she sounds perfectly lovely and in full command of her artristry even if the voice is not her 25 yr old belting voice. It is rich and warm and sensitive and subtle and beautifully pleasant to listen to. I love this song. I'm so sick of people saying she didn't have a voice at the end. What is this, then? She sounds exquisite.

  • Exactly sisalrug . . . very delicate in its phrasing and delivery . . .

  • I think she sounds REMARKABLY good here. This song doesn't push what was left of her range, and it's in her key--for years she sang in her more youthful key, further straining her voice. I like John Meyer's songs for her in this penultimate period. His "memoir" was unecessary and in bad taste but his music for her was good. I think this appearance is quite lovely. If only she could have secured a record contract!

  • Lovely . . . in its own way -- taken in its proper, accurate context. . . Thank You for posting this haunting rendition.

  • i think this Judy is VERY real. The raw emotion in this.

Particularly as she died so soon after this.

Isn't she singing to the audience she's loosing? Pleading with them not to leave her?

  • Regardlless of how she looked or sounded she is timeless. Proof isn that we are still talking about her and her wonderfull legacy!

This is a talent that is not appreciated any more. There is NOT and will EVER BE ANY legends to be found on that damn American Idol Tv. None could ever measure up to Garland!

  • god, beautiful. she looks so bad though.

id say that was a 70 year old.

  • Judy took one last trip to NY in May '69 and was visited by Richard Rodgers. Judy told him she worried about losing her audience and Rodgers told her, "Only bad material can do that." I think he was referring to her last appearances on Griffin, Cavett, and this appearance on Carson. This is not the real Judy, who, under normal circumstances, would not have sung this song.

  • Amazing. Whe wasn't in the best of voice...but is still amazing. This song breaks my heart. Judy Forever!!!

  • I gotta say. This one makes me cry every time. I love Garland.

  • This was one of three songs (another one was titled "Hate Myself in the Morning") that John Meyer, one of Garland's last lovers, wrote for her. Garland and Meyer's tumultuous--and fascinating--relationship is chronicled in Meyer's well-written memoir "Heartbreaker"--read it!

  • Umm... she died in June. I don't think it's quite 30 days before she died. Unless we were celebrating Christmas in July in 1968! Actually, did some looking today only and this was from 12/17/1968, so just six months before her death. Looks like she was on the Tonight Show twice that year. This was her last appearance.

  • WOW.........I want to sing this song. Judy G. is mesmerizing as always. Every word of that song...she knows what it means. And that arrangement with those lilting piano interludes is pure magic. The breaths and breaks she takes are textbook for any singer....too bad no one has written THAT textbook! Don't we miss Judy...even those of us who never lived when she did...we miss her.

  • This was just a about 30 days before her death !!

She never recorded this song this is one if not he only time singing it!!

  • Okay, that' an arrangement that should have been recorded in studio for a label. Great song, great chart, great singer.

  • Stunning & sad.

  • Judy was perfect, even in the worst of times. As always, her performance captures the essence of the song. It is the epitome of sadness and longing!
