The History channel had a similar program as this 10 years ago. It talked about casket science and demonstrated making a stainless steel casket. Also about burial in USA vs in Europe. Discussed the catacombs. In most parts of the USA a final resting place is final. I have never seen specialty coffins such as the shoe etc though. My step mom recently passed and she had a beautiful mother of pearl color stainless steel coffin with embroidered pink flowers on the inside lid.
Open casket funerals are common in the USA unless there was an injury, accident or fire that prevents the deceased from being viewed. And sometimes the deceased had prearranged funeral and wanted a closed casket. I have been to over 15 funerals and everyone was open casket. I kind of wished the funeral of my co-worker was closed casket though she was 37 and body ravaged by illness and diabetes.
@badgerattoadhall Normally, after the body has been prepared by the funeral director, a private viewing is held for friends and relatives at the funeral home with the coffin open before the funeral service.Prior to the service the lid is sealed down and is not meant to be re-opened- especially if the coffin is to be cremated. Another reason open casket funerals are uncommon is because the elongated hexagonal style of coffins widely used in the UK do not have lids that can open at just the top.
There are so many holidays, traditions, and rituals which center around the graves/tombs here in Japan that you're gonna end up going 2-3 times a year at the least.
I like the way death is approached with these programs. Here in America, you would NOT find anything like this on television. We are much more uptight about it.

Good videos. Such a taboo subject. It's scary but it happens to everyone, might as well get more info about it

I guess the old man has some nasty stuff inside his coffin thats why he doesn't allow anyone to look in.

Oh wow, if someone played Al Green at a funeral, I'd be a puddle....However, if my aunt was buried in a big ballet shoe, I'd pee with laughter.
