If the Stones had ever had a vocalist like this guy I would have owned every album they ever made! Wot ever appened the days when rock bands pushed it to the edge, especially in the vocal range? This is reaaalllll rock singing. Lets hear someone try this at a karaoke night.heh heh heh.
Extraordinary singing by Steve Marriott but to me not his greatest moment. Somehow this is about the Rolling Stones and these guys try too hard! Interesting.
I went to see Cactus and I think it was 10 Years After at the Forum around this time. The MC comes out and says Cactus will not be able to play due to a sudden illness. He says they managed to scrounge up a replacement act, and would Humble Pie be all right?
@alsaxe1 oh sure man I know who Jerry Shirley is , I always ldid like his powerhouse approach . I agree with what you say , the Pie had some fantastic musicians . Wasnt Shirley a founder of 'Fastway" later on ? They had a great sound too .
@Cincinnatus1869 i never heard of fastway....shirley is a keith moon type drummer w/more control..lol.. Keith would play all over the place while jerry would hold a "Powerful" beat and then wail away on the kit.....i think musicians, for the most part, have forgotton how to make music like all of my 70s hero's did

@Cincinnatus1869 looks like we're on the same page. It's all about rock music being dominated by guitar work. I never liked Cobain's music nor any of the alt stuff from the 90's. I hate out of tune guitars, which is what nirvana's music sounded like to me...My influences are all 60's-70's bands....the production, for the most part, was more in your face and raw than it is today...

@1968tjg I'm a little late to the party...found some amazing small faces stuff tonight but Stevie kick my ass in Humble Pie...god I wanted to sing like him...love ya all Stevie lovers...

Right-o buddy, but I'll tell you I'm really grateful for what these guys gave me as a snot-nosed 13 year old trying to stay awake to watch them on Don Kirshner's rock concert. They are my heroes to this day, and like you....God I miss stuff like this. If you can track it down, get a copy of their concert for the "King Buscuit Flower Hour". @tomshea69 I have news for you, record companies STILL run the show. Some artists are still toured to the max, & if they don't sell, they're OUT. They are still commodities, but fortunately now they have better management. Not like the slime & crime bosses that robbed Marriott of his money.
@tomshea69 I agree, this band had a great potential to be listed in the line of groups like Zeppelin. And Marriot had a great rock voice. The Small Faces is also a great example of this faith. A shame, they were both great in their time.
@tomshea69 Ah Yes It''s a 2 edged sword as that same busy schedule is what also allowed them to hone their skills further. Can't beat stage time to get your sound right.
this band was awesome, they gave the stones a run for their money and they had peter frampton before clem clempson. steve had one of the most original voices in rock and roll and losing him was an enormous tragedy. I seen them several times and i was lucky. where do you sign up to induct steve marriot in the rock n' roll hall of fame ?
Humple Pie Live at the Fillmore East ranks among with Made in Japan, Allmanns live at the Fillmore, Wishbone Ash Live Dates, Live at Leeds, Hendrix with Band of Gypsies, Little Feat live and only very, very few others.
@pretorious700: Your right. As you may know Keith picked that tuning up from Ry Cooder. Come to think of it, maybe things like that set the Stones apart from other bands. Cleverly borrowing from other artists, beside having the talent to use it in their own way.
it's not about what Stevie thought...it's about what WE the fans think...he should be inducted...and stevie can say "fuck you" from beyond the grave for all I care...matter of fact that would be appropriate ..and who the hell are you to say what is relevant or irrelevant?...and what Stevie would think?...jeez...the arrogance of some ppl...
good point Tecumseh...and I apologize for my previous post cause I think I misread you...I get your point now...it's all bullshit as far as the R&R Hall of Fame goes..heh..and nice turnaround on the "ignorance" thing...well done!...man I guess at some point it just meant something to me ...but I think you're right "so what does it really mean anyway? Fuck the hall of fame"....still....it bothers me....forgive me for that...:-)
okay I'm going to try this again cause I don't see my reponse coming up on this page...I apologize and agree with you Tecumseh...Fuck the hall of fame...nice turnaround on the ignorance thing...heh...I just feel if others make it (like friggin Madonna?)...christ Marriott should be there? but you're right...wtf cares...
I agree with Dukabor...Steve SHOULD be in there. I know to some the RRHF is being called The Rock n' Roll Hall Of Shame, and rightfully so of its inductions with shallow no feel people like Blondie and Madonna. But the RRHF was meant to honor the greats in Rock, so therefore Steve Marriott SHOULD be in there. How we "cleanse" the shame from the RRHF is to de-duct goofballs like Madonna & Blonde & any that didn't sing/play with feel & induct a singer/guitar great like Steve Marriott.
@freekoss He should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame---with the original Small Faces. That's where the heart of Marriott's reputation lies and always has when all is said and done. That's also where he proved himself a genuine soul singer and (with Ronnie Lane) an excellent songwriter. Good as they could be, Humble Pie wasn't even close.
@freekoss Where do I sign? Was in very early teens when I got turned on to Marriot and the Pie. Almost all music now is just total CRAP. Thanks Steve and everyone! lv2rddesert
Wow ! Even though the audio has its limitations, Steve Marriott shines through ! I have the live concert CD of this tune of Humble Pie featured on "the King Buscuit Flower Hour " Awesome stuff !
This is what scared Jagger off when Steve auditioned for the Stones. Richards was very keen on having him, Mick was scared shitless and wanted no part of it.
There's a book out, written by a Marriott insider, John Hewitt and Paolo Hewitt. It's title is "All Too Beautiful" and the info's in there. Something a lot of us Marriott fans knew about decades ago. Marriott was called in by his close buddy Keith Richards, they did an auditioned, Keith urged Steve just to play guitar, not sing. But he couldn't help himself and Jagger had a fit. While part of me likes Jagger, that doesn't surprise me one bit. Mick knew he'd get blown off the stage by Steve.
Whilst it's a fairly mouth watering prospect...in retrospect, the Stones were simply 'too small a town' for both Jagger and Marriott; it's a shame Steve and Keef never got something together between them both. Watching this reminds me of what an unbelievably brilliant performer SM was....RIP Steve.
p,s, this was right when Humble Pie was shutting down and Mick Taylor had just left. Marriott was in stellar company, almost anyone of them better than Wood.
Americans Wayne Perkins and Harvey Mandel, and Badfinger's Joey Molland were in consideration as well as Marriott and Wood.
thank you--this performance was a big part of my life-i only ever heard it and loved it,,now ive seen ,,and im a better man for it,,,thank you--thats all,,,,,
If you like a lead singer I recommend to check also his previous band out - Small Faces. Songs like Tin Soldier, Song Of A Baker, Rollin' Over, Afterglow Of Your Love...shit too many good stuff to mention!
Small Faces are hailed the best UK band never to hit it big in America-probably because they never toured there...
Check out the Small Faces band before his Humble Pie. Small Faces definitely good stuff, as good as the British Invasion groups. Small Faces was THE mod band of the 60s. Mod was a style of life for some then. Cool, mod, whatever. Steve became a long haired rocker, the best.
I am sorry mate but Ronnie Wood was never part of the Small Faces. You mean Ronnie Lane. Marriott, Lane, Jones &
MacLagan were the Small Faces. Rod Stewart & Ronnie Wood (2) replaced (1) Steve Marriott when he left & went on to form Humble Pie.
The Small Faces never ever toured America that is why they only had 1 or 2 hits (Itchycoo Park). Had they been to America they'd have been huge there like they were anywhere else. Have a good Xmas & Happy 2010 for everybody around the world.
Noone & I say NO ONE was better in rock music to me then Marriott! No one EVER will be.Not only was he the finest but he had the ears too, he always picked the BEST people to play with. His Humble Pie with & without Frampton was & is the greatest ROCK band ever IMO. LISTEN TO THS ! Plant & Hendrix copied, Weller wishes, Jagger not even close! Only the Who, Gallagher & Kinks had the rock blues street smarts to compete! aww I miss Marriott - just the best - case closed.
You have no idea what a flashback you gave me. I saw them in September 1972, and they looked and sounded exactly as this vid! Thank you for the great memory!!
Man I wish this entire show was available on video. I know it exhist somewhere I just wish someone would release it. At this point they could have played the MacDonald's menu and brought the house down. What a singer, what a band!!!
I LOVE CLEM CLEMPSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fuck the hall of fame"....still....it bothers me....forgive me for that...:-)
Dukabor 1 year ago
okay I'm going to try this again cause I don't see my reponse coming up on this page...I apologize and agree with you Tecumseh...Fuck the hall of fame...nice turnaround on the ignorance thing...heh...I just feel if others make it (like friggin Madonna?)...christ Marriott should be there? but you're right...wtf cares...
Dukabor 1 year ago
see my response to Tecumseh...heh
Dukabor 2 years ago
I agree with Dukabor...Steve SHOULD be in there. I know to some the RRHF is being called The Rock n' Roll Hall Of Shame, and rightfully so of its inductions with shallow no feel people like Blondie and Madonna. But the RRHF was meant to honor the greats in Rock, so therefore Steve Marriott SHOULD be in there. How we "cleanse" the shame from the RRHF is to de-duct goofballs like Madonna & Blonde & any that didn't sing/play with feel & induct a singer/guitar great like Steve Marriott.

@freekoss where?
slvideo1 1 year ago
@freekoss He should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame---with the original Small Faces. That's where the heart of Marriott's reputation lies and always has when all is said and done. That's also where he proved himself a genuine soul singer and (with Ronnie Lane) an excellent songwriter. Good as they could be, Humble Pie wasn't even close.

Marriott - God Bless Him!
rockon1898 2 years ago 3
First I'd heard of Marriott auditioning for the Stones! Where can I learn more about that?
blakedawg76 2 years ago
There's a book out, written by a Marriott insider, John Hewitt and Paolo Hewitt. It's title is "All Too Beautiful" and the info's in there. Something a lot of us Marriott fans knew about decades ago. Marriott was called in by his close buddy Keith Richards, they did an auditioned, Keith urged Steve just to play guitar, not sing. But he couldn't help himself and Jagger had a fit. While part of me likes Jagger, that doesn't surprise me one bit. Mick knew he'd get blown off the stage by Steve.
rockon1898 2 years ago 14

What other rock vocalist could just grab a mic and belt out that kind of soulful raunch?

Never heard of this band before and I really like them!
UberPiroxsFriend 2 years ago 3
oh cool , imo this is a very underrated band :)
If you like a lead singer I recommend to check also his previous band out - Small Faces. Songs like Tin Soldier, Song Of A Baker, Rollin' Over, Afterglow Of Your Love...shit too many good stuff to mention!
Small Faces are hailed the best UK band never to hit it big in America-probably because they never toured there...
xJayWalkerx 2 years ago 3
You GOT to get familiar with Marriot!
He was more influential than you know.
Brilliant guy and such a loss to those who loved him , which spans millions.
Yeah, check out the Small Faces for sure!
sisterdiggins 2 years ago 4
Check out the Small Faces band before his Humble Pie. Small Faces definitely good stuff, as good as the British Invasion groups. Small Faces was THE mod band of the 60s. Mod was a style of life for some then. Cool, mod, whatever. Steve became a long haired rocker, the best.
panktainter 2 years ago
kick ass band ...Marriot, Kenny Jones ...Ian Mcglain Ronnie Wood...Jeez
db95018 2 years ago
