when you are holding it with your hands, you are mesuring the resistor in parrallel with your body witch can have from 1k ohm to 50k, witch can influence your results :P

@SwanzSkate no, the 555 is only a cycle generator, you can make a tone generator that can make similar sounds but theres no programming the chip.

555's take dc and turn it into ac you can make square waves and send them directly to a speaker and it will make buzzing sounds etc. alter the frequency and it changes the pitch.

I'd say arduino beats picaxe, its more capable, whats more, the arduino can do LOADS without shields:

arduino also has built in serial out, and the mega has 4 SERIAL OUT, it also can direct drive LEDs, resistors aren't NEEDED they are RECCOMENDED.

Oh yeah, and did i mention its cheaper in my country to get an arduino compatible freeduino than a picaxe, usb cable for it and the other parts.

The basic 8 pin picaxe has 4 programmable pins that can all output serial, plus a full-time serial out pin, That makes 5.

As for the cost you don't need the usb lead you can use serial and make the lead yourself. Cost to get started is around US$3 that's the picaxe, 3 resistors and a plug.
