This trailer is somewhat misleading---it's really not the cartoonish comedy they're suggesting. But I guess they couldn't think of any other way to sell it.We'd have to wait for "Wall*E" for a robot love story to be a hit.
This movie killed Kaufman at the box office and got him and his writer tossed out off the movie lot. I remember when this came out and it played for maybe a month.
I love Andy Kaufman, but it's because of this movie that he was unable to do his dream project The Tony Clifton Story that would've been a classic. However, because this film bombed at the box office Kaufman couldn't make the film.
still though, this film is kind of a guilty pleasure for me. it's really strange and silly, but in a good way,
also, is it just me or does the little robot Phil-Co look like Wall-E, but with a bigger head?
Please don't! I own the movie! just bought it yesterday for 3 bucks at Big Lots. It's one of the worst movies i ever saw! i don't want it in my movie collection!
I love the year it came out (the year I was born,) I love the two stars in it (especially Bernadette Peters,) I love that its a comedy, I love that its about robots, and I LOVE that John Williams did the score. I have the score on cd issued by Varese Sarabande. Limited Edition of 2,000 copies :)
Yeah, it also lost to American Werewolf. in London. Quite shocking at the time because Stan Winston had campaigned heavilly for Make up Artists to get nominated. He andRick were nominated the same year, yet Rick became the very first winner of the Make Up Oscar.
Stan was dissappointed, especially since Rick was once his apprentice.
one of the dumbest fucking movies i have ever seen. id rather pierce my dick with a desert eagle then be forced through another viewing of heartbeeps-leonard maltin.
Watching this now on Cinemax and yes, I even have the barebones dvd. It's not as bad as some movies but because of this movie bombing at the b-o, Universal scrapped the Tony Clifton movie that was planned...Which may have been a good or bad thing.
This movie had so much potential. Then again, I kind of liked it when I was nine. The write up in "Electric Company" magazine made me want to see it...
this movie is horrible. I would say they were on crack.....but crack wasn't around then. musta been on 8balls of cocaine. but I can't blame that on cocaine. worst movie ever made.

Well on Letterman, Kauffman said he would refund all of his fans who saw this movie. You gotta love Andy

I remember seeing this on HBO as a kid, then Romeo and Juile-8. Odd times those early '80s were!

Not a bad flick, didnt really seem to be a comedy. At one point it seems to drift into comedic territory only to be brought right back into drama.
In any event I am sure it mostly bombed due to its limited release. (I actually saw this in the theater. had to go to philly to see it.)

I can see why this was nominated for a "Best Make-up" Oscar, but it looks a bit creepy. Probably why it bombed!

He did win 4 more afterwards, however.

Lol I actually laughed quite a few times from that.
It's got Raccoons!
Random and pointless humor...I like it.
