If you are an automotive technician and do your homework, the 4g63 is actually cheaper and easier to fix then the box motor of the sti, it is just awkward and not many shops have experience with it. Other than that, it is pretty much the same all around. The best way to do it is keep your warranty and do no attempt to void it. My special edition evo 9 is 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, mine is only at 32,000 and had the car for almost four years now, save money and time.

I am an auto technician & I'll be the first to tell you that the 4G63 is not cheaper to fix than the EJ, just cheaper. You're right though, most Subaru shops are in the Northern states & there aren't many of them but that's because Subarus tend to keep going with very little problems (except for the older EJ25s). It's good to see someone treat their car like a work of art instead of racing it every night. It's good to have fun but respect given is respect earned, even with STis/EVOs.

The thing that made me pick the STi is that it's a 2.5L and with the Crawford S5 it's even bigger, if Mitsubishi had taken the same step and made their EVO 2.5 or 2.8 then that would be different, the lag you get from a GT35r evo is un acceptable.

I really dislike the evo instruments so my preference is the Subi. These cars are just so similar in performance the decision has to come down to the detail. I like the boxer rumble better too.

Performance wise it's easier to make big power on the Evo (the 4g63 is tried and tested). It can be done with the STI but usually requires more work and money. Simply put it's easier to make 700WHP on an Evo than STI... but the STI can still make it.

Aesthetically pleasing.... I prefer the STI, Evo looks odd. If someone gave me the choice of only one for free I'd choose the STI... well it would have to be before 2007 cause Subaru fucked up with that Tribeca nose on 2007 and the ugly hatch now.

Agreed love I love both too, but I think both have their downsides. Mitsubishi doesn't have too good of a safety rating and are quite notorious for their recall history from what I've heard.. subaru's have a weird almost tank like driving feel to them + the less then spectacular understeer. From a performance point of view I think the evo is superior, but subaru just seems more solid to me from a mechanical pov.
