@TheHoodedStrider Constantine the Great wasn't the last Roman Emperor. He managed to regain control of both East and West and converted to Christianity, but the Western Empire died with Romulus Augustulus in 476 AD, and the East with Constantine XI in 1453.
@DeMVanAap I think rather than blaming a specific aspect of society for killing things we have to look at people, as Aristotle said problems in the city don't arise from the institution of the city but from human wickedness, and likewise Machiavelli said that humans will always give rise to their wicked impulses, i think that people are horrible to each other no matter what they believe in and frankly political conflicts have caused far more deaths than religious conflicts. The problem is people
What words do they sing!? It is likely either Greek or Latin, but perhaps not our modern dialect. It could be also they sing just sounds of no language, they sometimes do that in video game music so it does not endorse anything... but they did not with many other songs in Civ, so again i must ask, what are the lyrics!
@Ravie3 No, the Byzantine ADMINISTRATION spoke Latin up until the time of Emperor Heracleus in the 7th century when he change the official language from Latin to Greek. Even during the time of Justinian, the most common language in Constantinople was Greek, not Latin.
While playing this game I realized it was ἐν Ιορδάνῃ βαπτιζομένου σου Κύριε, the hymn of Theophany in the Greek Church. It is the model melody for whatever this piece of music is. Now can take my word on this since I have a level of authority with regards to Byzantine music, or you can go here: watch?v=ITojhvuyJg0 ... this realization of the melody is not exactly the same, but if you read the Kypsele edition with a Karas school of ornamentation, you will achieve the melody played in this video.
You niggas and your theological disscusions are gay. Besides if someone killed Christ when he was born at childbirth the world would have been a lot better off that way. Hail Ceasar!!
@LtBriJMAC how would the world be better if we didn't have religion? First if everybody followed religion, specifically Christianity, Islam, or Judiasm we wouldn't have slutty-ass whores having sex at 14! Also it gives people something to believe in, and it would teach us ways to peace and love of all cultures, religions, races etc. apparently something you lack you rasisct fuck.
@Cotif11 Wouldn't that be more SOCIAL? And who says they have to be whores? Sex is natural. society defines natural thinking. So does Religion. Take it out, and people will, naturally, make it again. Tose three monotheistic religions? Shit, then, you'll have poly theism, or if anything atheism. All have benefits and disadvantages. If you hate what religion does, then change the society it's in. Both define the other.
@danuisortiz I would rather be a Hindu or believe in a chubby guy so smart and enlightened the he was zapped up to heaven, than be an atheist, and yes sex is natural, but it would be better if they were to follow religion, specificaly Christianity because it states not to have sex out of the sanctaty of marriage, and this new bullshit about not talking school holidays off because they don't want to favor a religion, well FUCK THAT!! I'll take an entire week off for Christmas if I please!
@Ascensiam Confucianism and Taoism is something people believe in, those mythologies are just from the word itself myths it used to be religion until it became too unbelievable to be a religion.
Well, Hellenism used to be taken seriously just like Roman religion. If Christianity didn't take over it would've changed shape, just like Hellenism and Roman religion did (in later stages I wouldn't call them 'mythology'). Mayhap Mazdaism would have taken over (a derrved form of Zorroastrianism).
The Abrahamic religions and its God stems from mythology itself, by the way. I think that if Abrahamic religion nor Mazdaism took over, we would've compared best with Hindus (w/o the caste system).
@kalefles Also, the Bible itself, especially the Old Testament is mainly comprised out of mythology. Far from every Christian takes it literally (as if it were a history book), because it's too unbelievable. In this regard many old Hellenist philosophers didn't literally believe in Greek mythology (Plato for instance, didn't believe it literally) but it didn't make them irreligious.
@frostyguy1989 to a point, but the orthodox church was a fundamental part of the eastern roman empires society for a much longer period than what catholic church was to the western roman empire. Christianity ran alongside the western empire only lasted about 150 years before the empire ended. After that it wasnt really under the control of a romanl government.
@Kennychan222 Really? The Byzantines were famous for their overly elaborate and complex bereaucracy, plus they had a habit of gouging out the eyes of their enemies. Be careful what you wish for.
I personally prefer to stay in Medieval era and never evolve into the modern age. Because of that beautiful Renaissance music you will hear when you take a look from the distance.
Btw I dont think the byzantines should even be a civ, I hate shit like that, because its a later incarnation of the romans basically. I think Justinian should have possibly been incorporated as a Roman civ leader, and Charlemagne as a german leader etc
@Undertaker5712 The Byzantine Empire was always the Roman Empire. "Byzantine" is a term made up by a German to give the Holy Roman Empire more legitimacy.
The Byzantines called themselves and their empire Roman until its collapse in 1453. They never used the term Byzantine.
sumeria is an ancient civ so that could go either way, but babylon is close enough so i dunno. netherlands definitely are, had a major trade empire and were a huge power during the 1600s and 1700s. ethiopia, no, mali half. zulu not really
@Ascensiam nah i said the sumeria was historically significant in ancient history, so its borderline but it can stay. netherlands definitely. mali to an extent, zulu and ethiopia no
@sociopathicregret Netherlands and Mali both had an impact on commerce, but that does not make them major, they did not posess vast territory, big armies, or construct any of the monuments that many people know of today.
Now you may think of The University of Sankore, but i highly doubt many people know of it.
the dutch had a huge fucking empire of colonies in america, the indies, asia, etc. they did posess vast territory. they also controlled much of the seas. mali i said was HALF, so iffy.
@sociopathicregret I'd include Ethiopia, they have a long history of civilisation in the area, the Axumite Kingdom had a fine architecture tradition and flourished until the islamic conquest of egypt cut it off from trade with the byzantine empire and italy. There was then a dark age with the empire becoming semi nomadic with the capital being not much more than a makeshift military camp until the 1600's when some fine castles were built and a new capital at Gondar.
ethiopia would certainly been great considering it was only longlasting and uncoquered african empire, but so little is left out of that great civ, todays ethiopians have been absorbed by the ocidental culture
@sociopathicregret Charlemagne should have been French... He was of a german tribe, true (just like the Vikings were considered -germans- at the time) and did rule over territory today known as Germany, but his major works were in France and his capital was Aix-la-Chapelle (in France). And Holy Roman Empire came later in History... Zulu, Ethiopa and Mali... Not major, but seems like accurat Civ. Charlemagne just confused me here X_X And Byzantines were Greeks, so very different from the Romans
@sociopathicregret the byzantine empire definately took on a character of it's own, when it dropped latin and dissolved what was left of the tradition of the senate (in the 600's) it practically became a different kind of empire, civilsation, even. It was then roman only in name.
Although, you have a point in that Justinian did consider himself a true Roman, as seen by his desire to reconquer the fallen west. Maybe the Byzantines should have had Heraclius instead as their figurehead.
This music is so beautiful. I looked up the name of the song (something like Judex Justinian or something) a few days ago, but I couldn't find a real song to connect it to.
Orthodox church chant (and Catholic church chant for that matter) is some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard. I just can't help myself from thinking of those ornate cathedrals I've been fortunate enough to visit.
If this is a real song, with a real name, and not just a Civ music track, please tell me about it.
Byzantine has the incredibly overpowered Cataphract unit during the middle ages..I mean they are friggen scary during that point, but much like real life, post middle ages, they aren't all that special, Spiritual is more or less the most beneficial early game, so if you are an early conqueror they're one of the best factions to play. Personally, I prefer more late bloomer civs like Germany or the US.
@Othaur Spiritual is good throughout the game if you constantly take advantage of civic switches, or even state religions for diplo bonuses. It can be really strong early on swapping in and out of caste+pacifism.
@goodolarchie Oh I realize, but I tend to go with a democracy asap, again I'm more of a tech hound and prefer Germany, Greece, US, or Even France under Louis XIV. Though I'm not denying Byzantine is a tough faction, if I play them I tend to aggressively advance for chivalry and quickly expand, the Cataphract is just too huge of an advantage not to be aggressive with them.
the byzantines are really great because there is no anarchy from changing civs(probably because of the frequent dynasty changes) and because it is easy to build lots of cities to expand
Another advantage to Byzantium is their UU, the Cataphract. Not sure about you guys, but I find that that I do most of my war mongering (or am victim to it) in the middle ages, and the Cataphract is certainly a powerful unit, even against the earliest gunpowder units.
My favorites are Elizabeth I, Justinian I and Brennus. I am now playing as Justinian I, renamed myself Cillian Finlaigh and my state - Irish Empire. That music sounds very Irish Celtic to me.
Curiously, in Civ 3, the Byzantine leader was Theodora, who although was a prostitute, helped him to bring the Byzantine Empire to its Golden Age, if there's a new expansion for Civ IV and a new leader is for Byzantium, it shall be Theodora.
Justinian I was a peasant. Who happened to marry that prostitute. And then proceed to rise to power, reconquer most of western Europe, and kick major barbarian behind. Awesome.
His uncle had been chief commander of the Byzantine army, and later Emperor. The uncle, Justin, invited him as master of his household guard, and adopted him. Thus, when Justin I died, Justinian was the heir. The awesome one was actually the uncle, who was no one until he joined the army and rose through the ranks until the Imperial throne.
It should be Basil the Macedonian, or Basil the Bulgar Slayer. Even Manouel Komnenos, the Great. But having Justinian already it would be a bit redundant.
Being American, I see a cultural melting pot for what it is. Both a point of beauty and contention. All I know is that every bit of Turkish AND Greek cuisine I have eaten was delicious.
Thessaloniki was the second largest Byzantium city (next to Constantinople) and it was captured by the Greeks many years after Byzantium fell. The city still stands today, and it is an amazing city, i have been there before. However, Constantinople was captured by the turks in 1453, and is now called Istanbul.
Byzantium actually never existed (Excepting the Greek ancient city). Is the Roman Empire, the new capital of this empire was changed of Rome to Constantinople, even before the empire's division... I think the Roman Empire really falls in 1453, not in 476 (here just fall the west part). Byzantium was a name invented by Occident historians of the XVIII century with the purpose to separate them of the classic Roman Empire of Octavian or Cesar...
Truly, they never had a state language, the Romans gave them freedom, and the Byzantines were mostly composed of Greeks so Greek was the normal language there. If it wasn't then why would the Byzantines have worshipped god in greek??
Byzantium was never a major power in the middle ages after Justinian, to be honest. Their destruction was actually a huge BENEFIT to medieval Europe due to Byzantine scholars scattering and revealing Roman secrets, I believe. So no, they didn't really need a new leader. If I remember correctly, Justinian's WIFE is the Byzantine leader in Civ3!
Up until the 11th century so called "Byzantium" (It was the Roman Empire in fact) was not A mayor power, it was THE mayor power. It was the mayor power of the middle ages for a period of 500 hundred years - after Justinian's death. Not the destruction of the Empire was a benefit, its long existence was the benefit. Without the walls of Constantinople western Europe would had been conquered by the Arabs or turks multiple times.
A pity no one put a later Byzantine Emperor in the game.I am surprised and disappointed that one of the most developed (in social and cultural aspect) medival civilizations such as Byzantium doesn't have a leader with a philosophical trait.I myself am peaceful and always win either diplomatic or time or cultural victory and always choose a Philosophical leader-a pity my favourite is Suleiman.
dammit, i hate this guy. he always asks for everything and if u dont give it 2 him, he has a period and declares war on u. it gets annoying after a while
Each game he is always pissed at me but only seldom has the balls to declare war to me.... he is a bitch who likes to stab you while youre busy at another front..
This theme fits Justitian and the Byzantine in general. The Western Roman Empire had fallen not long before Justitian was born, and there must have been the thought in Constantinople that "We are what's left of Rome." surrounded by "barbarians".
The only thing that I can find wrong with Justinian's theme is that it's sung in Latin (if I'm not mistaken). It should be Greek as this was the language of the Roman patricians and, in the Eastern Empire, the majority of the people as well. Despite this little error, it's tied for my favorite Civ IV theme (along with Gilgamesh's early theme).
Actually in Justinian's time Latin was still the official language of the Empire and the man himself favored it according to Court historian Procopius. The organ bit is a bit dull though, I like better the a capella singing. And I agree, it's a fine piece, one of the best in the game.
Do you remember those earlier instructions I gave you? When you reach the Sid Meier's Civilization IV folder, instead of going to "Assets", go to "Beyond the Sword". From there on, go to "Assets", "Sounds", "Diplomacy".
I love playing as the Byzantines. I liked it in Civ III as Empress Theodora, and in Civ IV as Justinian. I wish thought that they had re-included Empress Theodora as one of the Byzantium leaders.
Theodora would actually be quite a good in-game leader :P As far as women goes in her time, she was pretty significant. And she was said to be at times a better ruler even then Justinian. Hehe, just my thoughts

I would disagre that Spiritual is a early game trait.
Switching Bureacracy-NAtionhood, Rep-PS, OR-Theocracy is very useful.
Lots of tasty civics are available in the late game & turns of Anarchy are more painful in the late game.
In case of Justy - Imperialistic is early game trait, while Spiritual is late game trait
Byzantines usually get all it need throgh medieval.

Another advantage to Byzantium is their UU, the Cataphract. Not sure about you guys, but I find that that I do most of my war mongering (or am victim to it) in the middle ages, and the Cataphract is certainly a powerful unit, even against the earliest gunpowder units.
StoanPhrogg 1 year ago 3
Musketman has 9 strength, cataphract has 12. only rifleman stands a chance in the open.

Neither of the Turkish leaders are raging dicks like Monty, and I'm a builder so I usually leave them alone.

I love this music SO MUCH. From BTS, this is way out in front, though Ragnar, Brennus, Genghis, Charlemagne, Washington and Isabella are pretty cool.
goatshredder 2 years ago
My favorites are Elizabeth I, Justinian I and Brennus. I am now playing as Justinian I, renamed myself Cillian Finlaigh and my state - Irish Empire. That music sounds very Irish Celtic to me.
BadBoy1968 2 years ago
Even though they sing in Greek.
Ennio444 2 years ago
@Ennio444 - is that Greek???
The music sounds very Irish style to me.
BadBoy1968 2 years ago
Irish? wtf? This sounds generally like church music.

@Ennio444
greek?
no latin in the eastern part of the roman empire?
ForsakenProt 1 year ago 2
My fault, the chants seem to be in Latin. But Greek was the language of the Empire since the reign of emperor Heraclius.
Ennio444 1 year ago
Justinian I is an OK leader. I always play as him, Charlemagne or Augustus.

I'm actually pretty sure this isn't Deux Judex Justus: there's a link to the actual song and it sounds nothing like this.

Curiously, in Civ 3, the Byzantine leader was Theodora, who although was a prostitute, helped him to bring the Byzantine Empire to its Golden Age, if there's a new expansion for Civ IV and a new leader is for Byzantium, it shall be Theodora.
Grax638 2 years ago
Justinian I was a peasant. Who happened to marry that prostitute. And then proceed to rise to power, reconquer most of western Europe, and kick major barbarian behind. Awesome.
PKMNEmerald 2 years ago
His uncle had been chief commander of the Byzantine army, and later Emperor. The uncle, Justin, invited him as master of his household guard, and adopted him. Thus, when Justin I died, Justinian was the heir. The awesome one was actually the uncle, who was no one until he joined the army and rose through the ranks until the Imperial throne.
Ennio444 2 years ago
that or Basil or one of the Comneni/Comnenoi
Carnivorousbutterfly 2 years ago
It should be Basil the Macedonian, or Basil the Bulgar Slayer. Even Manouel Komnenos, the Great. But having Justinian already it would be a bit redundant.
Ennio444 2 years ago
How so?

Being American, I see a cultural melting pot for what it is. Both a point of beauty and contention. All I know is that every bit of Turkish AND Greek cuisine I have eaten was delicious.

Thessaloniki was the second largest Byzantium city (next to Constantinople) and it was captured by the Greeks many years after Byzantium fell. The city still stands today, and it is an amazing city, i have been there before. However, Constantinople was captured by the turks in 1453, and is now called Istanbul.

Didn't like the animation they made for him though, looked kind of crappy compared to the other leaders.

BeautyNeverFades 2 years ago
Truly, they never had a state language, the Romans gave them freedom, and the Byzantines were mostly composed of Greeks so Greek was the normal language there. If it wasn't then why would the Byzantines have worshipped god in greek??
MrThebadguy 2 years ago
Byzantium was never a major power in the middle ages after Justinian, to be honest. Their destruction was actually a huge BENEFIT to medieval Europe due to Byzantine scholars scattering and revealing Roman secrets, I believe. So no, they didn't really need a new leader. If I remember correctly, Justinian's WIFE is the Byzantine leader in Civ3!
LinkMarioSamus 2 years ago
Up until the 11th century so called "Byzantium" (It was the Roman Empire in fact) was not A mayor power, it was THE mayor power. It was the mayor power of the middle ages for a period of 500 hundred years - after Justinian's death. Not the destruction of the Empire was a benefit, its long existence was the benefit. Without the walls of Constantinople western Europe would had been conquered by the Arabs or turks multiple times.

A pity no one put a later Byzantine Emperor in the game.I am surprised and disappointed that one of the most developed (in social and cultural aspect) medival civilizations such as Byzantium doesn't have a leader with a philosophical trait.I myself am peaceful and always win either diplomatic or time or cultural victory and always choose a Philosophical leader-a pity my favourite is Suleiman.

this is by far one of the most amazing Byzantine hymns i have ever heard... And its through a game? Wow! What an amazing Empire.
kstrat88 3 years ago 3
This theme fits Justitian and the Byzantine in general. The Western Roman Empire had fallen not long before Justitian was born, and there must have been the thought in Constantinople that "We are what's left of Rome." surrounded by "barbarians".

The only thing that I can find wrong with Justinian's theme is that it's sung in Latin (if I'm not mistaken). It should be Greek as this was the language of the Roman patricians and, in the Eastern Empire, the majority of the people as well. Despite this little error, it's tied for my favorite Civ IV theme (along with Gilgamesh's early theme).
aroguegurklis 3 years ago 2
Actually in Justinian's time Latin was still the official language of the Empire and the man himself favored it according to Court historian Procopius. The organ bit is a bit dull though, I like better the a capella singing. And I agree, it's a fine piece, one of the best in the game.

Do you remember those earlier instructions I gave you? When you reach the Sid Meier's Civilization IV folder, instead of going to "Assets", go to "Beyond the Sword". From there on, go to "Assets", "Sounds", "Diplomacy".
GigaNerd17 3 years ago
I love playing as the Byzantines. I liked it in Civ III as Empress Theodora, and in Civ IV as Justinian. I wish thought that they had re-included Empress Theodora as one of the Byzantium leaders.
TechnoBIan 3 years ago 4
But then again Justinian and Theodora were husband and wife. I don't think that would work.
KoreanKol 2 years ago
interesting...why not?
TechnoBIan 2 years ago
Theodora would actually be quite a good in-game leader :P As far as women goes in her time, she was pretty significant. And she was said to be at times a better ruler even then Justinian. Hehe, just my thoughts
