Ronnie didn't burn - he dies from complications of a broken leg. James Hunt pulled him out of the burning car, but the flames never got Ronnie. F1 had no plan on what to do if a driver got hurt, Ronnie would still be racing if this crash happened 5 years later.
Its always easy to look back in hindsight and say this or that, but I cant help but feel that those drivers, were a different breed than todays drivers.
maybe they are slower than today drivers due to lack of tecnhical background but i wonder why they look so "man" while today f1 pilot looks like silly pussy,,, I don't want to say this cause i respect actual drivers, but formula 1 seems far away a hero sport in those 1978 days....

the irony is that Giacomelli was thought to be more seriously injured. Ronnie died of something that can happen to anyone who breaks a bone. Dr Sid Watkins gives details as to what happened in the hospital in his book "Life at the Limit" a must read for any formula one fan.
Great video, stunning to see all the childhood-heroes in a row like this. Thank you. A great loss is truelly shown, yet we all know the competitors he drove against. So many men, so many competent and skillful. And then so many losses.
Ronnie Peterson was killed by the medics who, just to show how good they were convinced to be, reduced all the fractures in just a single surgical operation. An embolism was inevitable and it claimed the life of the Swedish driver.
@stefanorso An embolism it was, but its not for sure that it was because of overconfident doctors. He suffered massive traumatic fractures, causing great harm and suspectedly chock - and thereby also risking system collapse. It was a medical decision, not a overconfident one.
Very cool video. Not to say the events of that day. You can kinda see the look of a warrior in their eyes. They know what could happen, but thats what they do, and thats partially why they do it. The risk is part of the reward.
Absolutely rare and face enlightening of the drivers of the time and the emotion that we do not see anymore. Can you imagine such an horrific accident in F1 now days ? Amazing how times have changed so rapidly, yet the machines were just as awsum 35 years ago - and much more dramatic and spectacular and easy on the eye...
Mario andretti, Emerson fittipaldi :D , Niki lauda, Gilles villenueve, Ronnie peterson, Jackie ickx, Jody sheckter, keke rosberg, j.p jabouille. Holly all of this guys are legends D: . I wish I can see this racing but am born 13 years later
Excellent and very enjoyable, brought back some good childhood memories of watching these heros of a past era with my farther (and what a great era). Thanks for posting.
Hard to remember back to a time when the cars actually carried the driver's name in readable sized print. These days just setting aside a 3X5 inch piece of body work for the driver's name on the side of the car would probably result in the loss of $1 million in advertising fees.
those drivers were masters, pure machine and manual gearbox, no electronic devices as now. What could do pilots of today if they would have to drive such machines like those?
Nice work Mike.
Cheers.

They might not have been so aerodynamically efficent as the cars today...But by god they were Beautifull and different.
Remember the scream of the 12 cylinder Ferrari's on full chat down Hanger Straight Silverstone?.
Go to the Donnington Museum they are all in there.
