Maybe we should petition Elektra to release his other material. From everything I've read, he has more music that has inexplicably gone unreleased for almost two decades.Contrary to popular belief, he did live to record songs for a second album, and there were other songs recorded before SKIN. To me, he could be the black Jeff Buckley(the posthumous album king) if his fans pushed his label hard enough.
@TheJaycob1990 I'm agreed. Especially as some persist on here (larrybfresh20 - Mr Lewis's 'Summer Lightning' live) consumed by the pre-occupation of spreading falacy surrounding the singer's unreleased discography. His second album, in my opinion, would have had been triumphantly acclaimed and far out-sell debut album 'Skin'. Is there a deceitful game plan? Possibly. Time distorts memory, and at that point a new release is heard sung by a new artist, triggering a cloudy thought: Lewis's songs?
@muzo56281721 If you type in Ephraim Lewis Glen Ballard into google, then you should get an interview with Ballard in which he says that he completed some songs with Ephraim. And if you visit Ephraim's Facebook page(Ephraim Lewis-The Great Lost Singer) a former producer says in the page description that he has demos of songs, some of which are better than the ones on SKIN. In my opinion, SKIN's lack of sales and the failure of black british male singers in general has led to the lack of material
@TheJaycob1990 Thanks for links. Mr Lewis had a fantastic second album in the making. Vocally, he focussed on utilising his acting skills to transform his lyrics. Instantly I believed this concept would be the catalyst to herald Mr lewis's big break-through. Interestingly, he had two completely different musical versions of the same song on demo for album 2: He had the agonising decision making of which one would eventually feature on the released album! Both were great, such was his talent!
Ephraim Lewis' music has been a part of my life for the past two years now. I play Skin more than any other album in my collection. I really wish that he had lived to record another album. As far as his death...we all make mistakes. I do believe that he would have come down had the police not messed with him. This was post-Rodney King after all. Killing promising black people was/is nothing new to police. Look at what they did to Aiyana Jones, a seven year old girl in detroit, or sean bell.

Sometimes, while experiencing a seemingly rough day of academic studies...I take a break and listen to this beautiful, and enchanting song. It re-energizes my senses. When it was first released I played it over and over-singing every-word; my boyfriend stopped picking me up. The song was better to me, than he could ever be...smile. I guess he said, "Either you, or the CD," I kept the CD!
heard a cover of this, remembered a long time ago I heard and loved this song, somewhere, and never knew who was. SO happy to find it again. Thanks for posting and sharing the genius of E. Lewis
I really love this song. This is the song I desire for my audience to listen to as they are gathering to embrace my wedding nuptials. He addresses the trees, and I appreciate the trees. His sound is sooting and perfect for an event for my Lion of Judah Candle Edifice, for Valentine's Day. All by the seaside where couples can hold hands and walk together before the crowd. Ephraim, I was in Kroger's yesterday, and they played this song and I nearly cried-the moment was right.
I was so happy to find this on youtube! This has been one of my favorite songs since 1993! it holds so many wonderful memories for me. It just makes me sad that this man was taken in the prime of his life in a tragic shooting by police....I hate that he is gone...gone too soon. BUT atleast he left us "Skin" to continue to hear his beautiful voice.
I agree with your assessment 100% from the kazaa comment to the poor quality of the fodder [use of the 's' word would easily suffice here] being presented to us today as music. As for Skin, I recently (May 2010) listened to it and had to take it to my Dad. I had forgotten I had it and had not given my Dad the pleasure of listening to the late Mr. Lewis. Cheers.
I love this song, how did he died?? this is terrible, I discovered his music just few years ago, some peoples legacy is gonna live forever, no matter what!!!!!
This widely unheralded genius left this world in tragic fashion in '94 at just 26. Those who were "in the know" back then compared him to a Marvin Gaye meets Seal, his mega superstar status was already written in stone. He lived with a certain uneasiness about his sexuality and had only near the end come to terms with it, he'd found peace. His sole album, Skin, is a one in a million that you'll like every song. I sang "Drowning" to my infant son every night to lull him to sleep.
He was angelic in voice, spirit and body. Beautiful in every way though I've never had the pleasure of meeting him. I swear I can see hie aura and know him for who he truly was. R.I.P. brother Ephraim.
Wonderful song... ecclectic, elegant and timeless... fits in the same category as Sade... sorry to hear of his passing it is a loss for all of us music lovers... may he rest in peace and wake up to a new world and sing again... God bless his family
pbase36 - your video explaination is very well put. Though his death was tragic, I think of him in a positive light because of this beautiful track,. May he rest in peace.
I was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia when this came out. I remember listening to this sitting in my car before PT. Brother was way ahead of the pack on this one! RIP Mr. Lewis... Classic!!!
I REALLY wish Mr. Lewis was still alive today. This is one of the romantic songs I've ever heard, and it would have been great to see what he would have recorded moving forward.
Mi Lindo, this song is just so pleasant when we're together and it expresses just the way I feel when I look into your eyes. I hope you have a wonderful day today and always. Miss you much Ojos Lindo...P.M.
I Myself was not there on that day/night when he was taken from us but there were eye witness that saw what fuckin L.A.P.D. did to him they taserd him and he fell head first from a 4or5 story Condo building. and what i wish is that Ephraim Lewis !HAUNT! the whole Fuckin L.A.P.D. for the rest of life period! he has my Blessings! R.I.P. i love u #21
TRAGIC! I owned this album in 1992. Loved to it often. Lived to it well. So sad, the way he died. LAPD sucks. They surely shocked him over the railing. Pigs. RIP, Ephraim Lewis.
Too many discrepancies in his murder, imho. The taser didn't kill him but falling to his death, did. I believe his unique voice would have taken him places. God rest you, Ephraim.
I've loved this song since I 1st heard it in '92. I didn't even know he'd died til now. What a tragic loss. Guess it's true that Heaven's got a helluva band...
wow! i did not know this super talented brother had passed and how it happened is a shame wow.his music will live on because its so real.rip my brother.
Yes. He was brilliant and slated to be a very big star. However, it is conveniently called a suicide by the L.A. Police that had a large part in his death. Unfortunately, he was not himself at the time and their excessive use of force led to him plunging to his death.
Not suicide, he was murdered. This was not a hardened criminal nor drug user. Something happened to him outside of himself that led to his tragic and unnecessary death. Also, read the comment left by bitstreamstudios, below.
his songs are great but kinda sad , as he had talent to go all the way , i like his style and smooth vocals , very sad britain and the world lost a very talented man
Geesh, I didn't know he had passed. I love this song and will keep it always on my mp3 player. Its a song to make love too so I'll continue to think as such.
@Lupo059 Yes and The great SELENA QUINTALLINA Is a good example to our present day hispanic & latino artist.Hispanic artist and latino artist need to behold SELENA QUINTALLINA"s style and manners
@Lupo059 His voice was magical, but his death (you know, where he got high on drugs, went ape-shit and was combative with the police?) not such a good example of style and manners...
I heard this song back in '92 when it first came out. Loved it then. I was very sorry to hear he had died. What a beautiful voice, and what a tragic loss. RIP
It has an ethereal quality to it. It's like you can't quite touch the emotions you're tapping into. Not too many songs can emit different emotions from the same listener. This is one of those rare songs
One of my all time favourite songs , not anything today can compare . Inever knew was a black man singing though . I used to think it was Johnny hates Jazz from the 80's
beautiful and sad. i wish he would have lived to record his second album with glen ballard as planned. it's a shame that he doesn't have a cult following like the late jeff buckley. he does have some unreleased music that his family/label could put out.
i read somewhere that somewhere that he was there celebrating his album release and someone slipped something in his drink, causing him to act loopy hence getting tazzered.
This song has been a staple in my life since I first heard it around 1992. One of the most beautifully haunting songs ever. It brings back memories of love lost... but I still love it. It's just an amazing song... gives me goosebumps everytime.
I'm so shocked and saddened to hear about Ephraim's death. I didn't know he had died.
God Bless him and his family.
Rest in Peace Ephraim and may you sing with the Angels forever.
It's one of my all-time favourites too. What a sound. God bless you Ephraim.

Lewis. Cheers.

What a great loss for us, but greater loss to his family. My deepest sympathy.

I just discovered him and wow such a talent its a shame he had problems that led to his suicide.
fickenshiskoff 2 years ago
Yes. He was brilliant and slated to be a very big star. However, it is conveniently called a suicide by the L.A. Police that had a large part in his death. Unfortunately, he was not himself at the time and their excessive use of force led to him plunging to his death.
Now that's tragic!
bitstreamstudios 2 years ago 4
@ fickenshiskoff
Not suicide, he was murdered. This was not a hardened criminal nor drug user. Something happened to him outside of himself that led to his tragic and unnecessary death. Also, read the comment left by bitstreamstudios, below.

It has an ethereal quality to it. It's like you can't quite touch the emotions you're tapping into. Not too many songs can emit different emotions from the same listener. This is one of those rare songs

beautiful and sad. i wish he would have lived to record his second album with glen ballard as planned. it's a shame that he doesn't have a cult following like the late jeff buckley. he does have some unreleased music that his family/label could put out.

He didn't "jump." He was tazzered by a LAPD and fell to his death.

i read somewhere that somewhere that he was there celebrating his album release and someone slipped something in his drink, causing him to act loopy hence getting tazzered.
