The election process was rigged long before 1970, they just used a different method to rig it. They had been rigging it so long, and people were believing it that they got lax in the early 70's with this new system, which is actually more transparent. My parents were refused the right to vote at the Caucus. They have been registered Republicans in Iowa for over 20 years. There was undoubtedly something fishy going on. I lived in Iowa for 23+ years, and I can tell you, the Caucuses are certainly rigged.

I was a precinct chair and am a county chair in Iowa. I am also a Ron Paul supporter. There were plenty of opportunities on a local level to skew the results. All it takes is a crooked chair, reporter and "observers". I can think of a number of ways that I could have cheated. But I didn't. I did my best to see that the process was fair and honest. The Iowa central committee had better be just as committed to honesty or the results would be questionable, and not just by a handful of votes.

Why should we so naively assume that this was a mistake. Politics is filled with power-hungry and corrupt individuals. To cheat a bit on the vote is just politics -- like buying votes, or raising money by cutting deals with the rich and powerful, or promising what you won't deliver, often what you have no wish to deliver.
