Your english is very european, which is an odd english accent to learn for a brazilian, I would think, since american english is much different and closer to Brazil. "color" and "collar" are not incredibly different, here. In fact they sound so extremely alike they can be confused, especially with faster speakers. However there are sooo many different American dialects, and I'm speaking from the east coast. I know vowels especially get completely changed within American dialects it's crazy.

@PeidoLord In standard british and I believe in standard american only the plural form men is pronounced with 'e' from pé. The singular form is pronounced with 'ae' as in cat, but there are many people that don't know about this.
@icangetover I can't generalise that in american english you don't distinguish 'colour' from 'collar' for example. A lot of Brazilian speakers that I met pronounce 'colour' as in 'collar'. In standard british and I'm sure that in the US (maybe not in the whole US) the two words are pronounced differently.

Esse é pra ajudar os brasileiros q aprenderam a falar o ingles com os sons da lingua portuguesa (assim como eu) devido ao proprio sistema das escolas de ingles. Qdo vc chega no exterior vc percebe q n entende os nativos direito, mas qso vc aprende a pronunciar com os sons da lingua inglesa, esse problema desaparece pq os mesmos sons q vc aprendeu sao aqueles q os nativos usam.

I was born in Brazil and I lived for many years here in the U.S. The fact is that each area has a different accent. @digofarias pronunciation changes when the accent changes. if u make a comparision between U.S english and british english, u'll see that same words are pronounced in different ways... here is one of them: "little"

Nao venha me dizer que, por exemplo, brasileiro pronuncia think como 'FINK' porque ele sabe que la em East London o pessoal fala assim. I'm afraid it's not a free dictionary but you can check it for free (just google dictionary cambridge, it's the first link). The 'ʌ' symbol from 'co' (colour) is the same symbol used in mo (from mother), bro (from brother) and lo (love). So, I was wondering if you could tell me what is wrong. All the best
@digofarias Dude, you teaching people some next cambridge accent, you dont want them to look fresh. I've never heard anyone say colour like you did. Have you watched movies? well ofcourse you did. If you find a famous person saying "caller" in a movie scene, you will never find it. In my mind, it is still wrong.

Language is about communication, for being such, body language, facial expressions, fluency, eye contact, smiles and so on, are as important as pronunciation (accent doesnt matter at all). I made it clear that I'm giving some TIPS (not teaching!) on how to improve brazilian english speakers' pronunciation (not accent!) and people always get the wrong end of the stick.. haha, but that's life.
@digofarias The problem is that when you say we say things WRONG just because they are not native-like, that is, wanting or not, a way of patronizing. It might not have been your intention, but that's what someone that sees your video should think, because that's what it's actually passing. Hope you don't stand up for this terminology of "wrong" (to define non-native pronunciation) and "right" (to native pronunciation)... @BrazilToAbroad There is a difference between ACCENT and PRONUNCIATION. I'm very clear on the video's description that when I say something is wrong, I'm talking about the pronunciation, not ACCENT. Sou brasileira e estudante de Letras-Inglês da UFES e você realmente está confundindo as coisas, todos os estudantes de qualquer língua já no primeiro período aprendem que não existe uma forma "correta" ou "errada" de falar. Os erros que podem vir a acontecer é na parte de intonação, que algumas línguas quando uma palavra é falada de duas ou mais formas gera novo significado. Agora você fala que tem gente pronunciando errado? Não existe só um tipo de inglês meu filho. Seja menos ignorante.
@nettolarissa É com esse tipo de pensamento que os brasileiros quebram a cara qdo chegam na Inglaterra ou USA. Eles acabam sem entender o que os nativos falam e apesar de a maioria das vezes serem entendidos pelos nativos, existem palavras q os proprios nativos nao os entendem falar. Pq sera? Por isso que aconselho sempre que as pessoas tenham a mente aberta e nao sejam iludidas por opiniao de professor em universidade. Devemos aprender a pensar por nos mesmos (critical thinking).
@nettolarissa Bom, Nos 2 testes que fiz da Universidade de Cambridge de ingles eles avaliam a sua pronuncia. Adivinha pq? Pq existe pronuncia aceitavel e nao-aceitavel. Ex: vc n pode pronunciar THINK com som de 'S' por exemplo. Isso é considerado erro de pronuncia, nao de sotaque. Isso vc nao tem que discutir comigo, mas sim com as universidades mais respeitadas do mundo: Oxford e Cambridge. Eles quem sao os ignorantes :)

Defendo que as pessoas busquem competência comunicativa e que a língua seja utilizada como ferramenta de interação. Ilude-se quem pensa que vai "falar igual um nativo da língua"...
No entanto, devemos buscar um "accent minimazing"(redução do sotaque), pois auxiliaria o entendimento internacional do "nosso inglês"(cada um tem o seu modo de usar a língua). Para que eu seja entendido melhor, o Willian Bonner possui qual sotaque (em português)?
Ele não usa mais o seu natural. Ele buscou uma linha mediana, um standard. Assim TODO o Brasil pode compreendê-lo bem. Isso também é possível no Inglês, claro, com a dificuldade adicional de não ser nossa língua-mãe.
Por isso defendo o ensino, produção e treinamento dos fonemas ingleses para que possamos manobrar com as palavras corretamente, "enxergando" através da escrita fonética como se produz realmente cada som da língua.

Acredito que o sotaque que temos é importante marca cultural. A forma como as palavras são pronunciadas não deve ser uma barreira para que se fale a língua... O importante é compreender e ser compreendido.

Hi Rodrigo! Great job. Keep going. I don't know where the reference for "correct pronunciation" you're using comes from, but the way you say as the "right" one sounds like a great-grandfather from a far far away land such as the backlands of Australia or New Zealand rather than the standard American or Canadian modern English pronunciation, but I confess your pointing out of the mispronunciation mostly done by non native speakers is awesome. What may sound odd to some may be ok to others. Cheers
@TheJulioCode Hi Julio! I use to say that "accent" is completely different from "pronunciation". What matters for me is the correct pronunciation. I don't care if I've got a weird accent at all. My goal is to make you understand everything that I say without the need to ask me to repeat. On the other hand, this video aims to make brazilian english speakers aware of some common pronunciation mistakes that I used to commit whilst studying english. Cheers
@TheJulioCode He is teaching British English pronunciation, as the title of the video implies, hence his reference for "correct pronunciation" comes from the standard British English as used in England.
Obviously England has many regional dialects and accents, just as there are many differences between the Portuguese spoken in Santa Catarina and Bahia for example. To me, his pronunciation is absolutely perfect. He has the best English of any Brazilian I have ever heard (and I've heard a lot.)
Dizer que algo é "certo" ou "errado" é muito complicado.. especialmente sem se considerar o falante, o sujeito e a subjetividade. Ou a história. Enfim, vídeo interessante, mas não é a palavra final em termos de pronúncia. Os falantes nativos que ouvirem as "correções" que você mencionou vão pouco dar atenção, até porque o Inglês tem muitas variações..

Boas dicas! Ninguém melhor do que um brasileiro para saber as particularidades ou dificuldades de um brasileiro ao pronunciar uma palavra estrangeira. Não acho que o vídeo foi criticar o sotaque, também não vejo nada de mal ter sotaque, o problema é quando o sotaque atrapalha no entendimento da informação, por exemplo: love dificilmente pode ser confundida com outra palavra porém uncle/ankle pode tornar a frase confusa like "I hurt my unkle/uncle" ;)
Muita gente critica o nosso sotaque, mas todo mundo sempre vai ter, independente de pais. O frances por exemplo e muito forte e nem por isso eles morrem por causa disso. E so uma questao de ouvido!

Rodrigo, your pronunciation is quite good! Nice British accent and just little Brazilian influence. Just take care when pronouncing the word "English". The rest is OK. Ah, one more tip: the pronunciation in "love" is not actually the same as in "mother", right? "love" has the same sound as in "up", "above", "brother", "touch", but not the same as in "mother", which actually has the same sound as in "hot", "not", etc. Right? Regards.
@danielsacavalcante Thanks for the compliment mate! My goal in my studies was just to pronounce the words correctly, not to speak with a british accent. Actually, I have to speak english with a brazilian accent as I'm brazilian. :) I double checked the cambridge advanced learners dictionary here and "mo" from mother is pronounced the same as "up". About the "English" word I double checked me pronouncing it and I wasn't able to spot my mistake. Do you mind on clarifying that for me?

I had been pronouncing it wrongly for 5 years and was so sure I was right that I'd never checked it out before, sorry for correcting you where there was no mistake. Concerning the word "English", I guess I've heard you pronouncing it as "[eŋglɪʃ] instead of [ɪŋglɪʃ ] at 0:29. Cheers.
That's awesome video mate, thanks for sharing with us. I live in Australia for two years, got married with australian and I still have more brazilian accent than you. You're doing great!!! I found a few english leassons on piratebay and some other websites and the trick to be fluent is exhaust your brain studying and listening: human brain learn by REPETITION, read repeat and do again we memorize vocabulary and improve our pronunciation. So when we speak it won't sounds soooo brazilian. Cheers

@alexstorn4 I agree with you that there are many accents and mancunian accent pronounces "love" differently, and so forth, but be aware that this is just a test video as I said in the description and for brazilian english speakers I reckon it's a good tip as they usually speak based on the brazilian portuguese accent they already know. It's also worth to note that not just brazilian but any foreign people can be aware that english vowel sounds are different from their native language.

I was born in Brazil and I lived for many years here in the U.S. The fact is that each area has a different accent. @Ezekias10 Eu nao estou criticando a pronuncia dos brasileiros. Apenas estou repassando os erros que eu cometia na epoca que estudei ingles no Brasil. Nao venha me dizer que, por exemplo, brasileiro pronuncia think como 'FINK' porque ele sabe que la em East London o pessoal fala assim. Eles pronunciam pq os professores deles de ingles nao corrigiram eles. Eu tb pronunciava pelo mesmo motivo e apenas coloquei algumas dicas aqui pra o pessoal que acha interessante, sem magoas :)

E também nem os próprios falantes da língua falam tudo perfeitinho então eu acho que se pode ter uma certa liberdade no jeito que você fala outra língua

@TuianePestana @TuianePestana According to Cambridge English Pronouncing Dictionary the correct pronunciation is /kʌl.ə/. I'm afraid it's not a free dictionary but you can check it for free (just google dictionary cambridge, it's the first link). The 'ʌ' symbol from 'co' (colour) is the same symbol used in mo (from mother), bro (from brother) and lo (love). So, I was wondering if you could tell me what is wrong. All the best

@digofarias Dude, you teaching people some next cambridge accent, you dont want them to look fresh. I've never heard anyone say colour like you did. Have you watched movies? well ofcourse you did. If you find a famous person saying "caller" in a movie scene, you will never find it. In my mind, it is still wrong.

Language is about communication, for being such, body language, facial expressions, fluency, eye contact, smiles and so on, are as important as pronunciation (accent doesnt matter at all). Rodrigo, seu inglês é muito bom e você nos forneceu dicas que, pelo menos a mim, amante do sotaque inglês, foram extremamente valiosas. Não ligue para os ignorantes que comentam! Quando se aprende uma lingua, o objetivo é SIM, falar como o nativo, ter a pronúncia correta das palavras, mas isso somente se conquista com a constante interação com os mesmos. Isso não é domínio cultural, isso é aprendizado. Se você se dispõe a aprender uma língua, é importante saber como falá-la corretamente.

It might not have been your intention, but that's what someone that sees your video should think, because that's what it's actually passing. Hope you don't stand up for this terminology of "wrong" (to define non-native pronunciation) and "right" (to native pronunciation)... Sou brasileira e estudante de Letras-Inglês da UFES e você realmente está confundindo as coisas, todos os estudantes de qualquer língua já no primeiro período aprendem que não existe uma forma "correta" ou "errada" de falar. Os erros que podem vir a acontecer é na parte de intonação, que algumas línguas quando uma palavra é falada de duas ou mais formas gera novo significado. Agora você fala que tem gente pronunciando errado? Não existe só um tipo de inglês meu filho. Seja menos ignorante.

@nettolarissa É com esse tipo de pensamento que os brasileiros quebram a cara qdo chegam na Inglaterra ou USA. Eles acabam sem entender o que os nativos falam e apesar de a maioria das vezes serem entendidos pelos nativos, existem palavras q os proprios nativos nao os entendem falar. Pq sera? Por isso que aconselho sempre que as pessoas tenham a mente aberta e nao sejam iludidas por opiniao de professor em universidade. Devemos aprender a pensar por nos mesmos (critical thinking).

@nettolarissa Bom, Nos 2 testes que fiz da Universidade de Cambridge de ingles eles avaliam a sua pronuncia. Adivinha pq? Pq existe pronuncia aceitavel e nao-aceitavel. Ex: vc n pode pronunciar THINK com som de 'S' por exemplo. Isso é considerado erro de pronuncia, nao de sotaque. Isso vc nao tem que discutir comigo, mas sim com as universidades mais respeitadas do mundo: Oxford e Cambridge. Eles quem sao os ignorantes :)

No entanto, devemos buscar um "accent minimazing"(redução do sotaque), pois auxiliaria o entendimento internacional do "nosso inglês"(cada um tem o seu modo de usar a língua). Para que eu seja entendido melhor, o Willian Bonner possui qual sotaque (em português)?
Ele não usa mais o seu natural. Ele buscou uma linha mediana, um standard. Assim TODO o Brasil pode compreendê-lo bem. Isso também é possível no Inglês, claro, com a dificuldade adicional de não ser nossa língua-mãe.

Hi Rodrigo! Great job. Keep going. I don't know where the reference for "correct pronunciation" you're using comes from, but the way you say as the "right" one sounds like a great-grandfather from a far far away land such as the backlands of Australia or New Zealand rather than the standard American or Canadian modern English pronunciation, but I confess your pointing out of the mispronunciation mostly done by non native speakers is awesome. @TheJulioCode Hi Julio! I use to say that "accent" is completely different from "pronunciation". What matters for me is the correct pronunciation. I don't care if I've got a weird accent at all. My goal is to make you understand everything that I say without the need to ask me to repeat. On the other hand, this video aims to make brazilian english speakers aware of some common pronunciation mistakes that I used to commit whilst studying english. Cheers

@TheJulioCode He is teaching British English pronunciation, as the title of the video implies, hence his reference for "correct pronunciation" comes from the standard British English as used in England.
Obviously England has many regional dialects and accents, just as there are many differences between the Portuguese spoken in Santa Catarina and Bahia for example. To me, his pronunciation is absolutely perfect. He has the best English of any Brazilian I have ever heard (and I've heard a lot.)

Enfim, vídeo interessante, mas não é a palavra final em termos de pronúncia. Boas dicas! Ninguém melhor do que um brasileiro para saber as particularidades ou dificuldades de um brasileiro ao pronunciar uma palavra estrangeira. Não acho que o vídeo foi criticar o sotaque, também não vejo nada de mal ter sotaque, o problema é quando o sotaque atrapalha no entendimento da informação, por exemplo: love dificilmente pode ser confundida com outra palavra porém uncle/ankle pode tornar a frase confusa like "I hurt my unkle/uncle" ;)

Rodrigo, your pronunciation is quite good! Nice British accent and just little Brazilian influence. Just take care when pronouncing the word "English". The rest is OK. Ah, one more tip: the pronunciation in "love" is not actually the same as in "mother", right? "love" has the same sound as in "up", "above", "brother", "touch", but not the same as in "mother", which actually has the same sound as in "hot", "not", etc. Right? Regards.

Actually, I have to speak english with a brazilian accent as I'm brazilian. :) I double checked the cambridge advanced learners dictionary here and "mo" from mother is pronounced the same as "up". About the "English" word I double checked me pronouncing it and I wasn't able to spot my mistake. Do you mind on clarifying that for me?

I had been pronouncing it wrongly for 5 years and was so sure I was right that I'd never checked it out before, sorry for correcting you where there was no mistake. Concerning the word "English", I guess I've heard you pronouncing it as "[eŋglɪʃ] instead of [ɪŋglɪʃ ] at 0:29. Cheers.

I found a few english leassons on piratebay and some other websites and the trick to be fluent is exhaust your brain studying and listening: human brain learn by REPETITION, read repeat and do again we memorize vocabulary and improve our pronunciation. @digofarias That's amazing. I mean, I've been studying English for 5 or 6 years now but I haven't gotten an accent like yours. Mine is more american-oriented since I've studied american english for a longer time than british, but I hope I'll end up mastering the british accent as you do (I assume yours is from Southern UK since I have a few friends in that area)

hahaa my husband is brazilian .. and i have some funny examples of where these words have caused some trouble lol. But this guy is great is you need help because sometimes you don't know you are saying it incorrectly. Rod, I hope you have one for problems with english speakers while speaking portuguese since more people are learning now!!

I think it's soooo fancy your brittish accent and then when I try, sounds sooo fake in voice, so I'll stick to my californian-brazilian accent! But nice tips ;)

@marcelviannafilho Exactly Brazilians do not usually pronounce correctly some english words!! many should learn to speak a better english. Accent is not what he is talking about. You should be more polite.

@digofarias I think it's just that it *sounds* like your'e saying that ppl are supposed to say those words correctly. It just sounds a bit hostile in your video.

@gabriel1812 I'm sorry about that. Of course people can speak the way they want. I know that pronunciation only matters to the point where we can be understood correctly. I didn't mean to be hostile, instead I tried to give some tips on some english words.

hey mate wtf,is it cos are wrong you know why cos i been living all over uk mate and i know for sure that your (fake) accent form london south i would say, theres that pronunciation but go to manchester ou evem south uk and realize that is normal to say words like three pronuonced life free , and and people talk realize that the accent is making the soud a bit diferent , so dont say love is (lave) cos in north they say love( love ) what you are tring to do is making everyone talks likeu

@alexstorn4 I agree with you that there are many accents and mancunian accent pronounces "love" differently, and so forth, but be aware that this is just a test video as I said in the description and for brazilian english speakers I reckon it's a good tip as they usually speak based on the brazilian portuguese accent they already know. It's also worth to note that not just brazilian but any foreign people can be aware that english vowel sounds are different from their native language.
