The switch to 990cc four strokes in 2002 was the end of the two-stroke 500cc era. It then went back down to 800cc from 2007-2011 and now going up to 1000cc for next year. The change isn't quite as dramatic as a doubling of capacity would suggest.

you would of heard a two stroke its the scooter or common dirt bike noise.

A 4 stroke cycle is on the first rotation it blows the exhaust gas out then sucks the air/fuel in. On the 2nd it squeezes the gases the sets them alight,

A 2 stroke does all 4 in 1 rotation of the engine but at the cost of poor lubrication and dirty emmisions.

@ulverup The difference is in the amount of strokes a cylinder takes to complete a cycle of intake, compression and ignition, and exhaust. I don't remember the exact differences, but a two-stroke makes power roughly twice as often as a four-stroke. Wikipedia has some excellent moving diagrams.

I couldn't tell you where to find it as I received it as a gift =\
