  • In Trainz 12 The Engine Sounds on the SP SD45 are exactly the same as this! and it come with a highly detailed route from Bakersfield to Mojave. In the southern pacific / ATSF Era.

  • Love that Mars light.

  • Is this the PFE reefer block?

  • Love to hear them put pedel to the metal! Great video. Totally dramatic.

  • GREAT sound quality .....

  • What great memories with my dad! We chased SP and Santa Fe freight over the mountains to the Loop! We used to park hear and watch 'em climbing hard up the grades. The Mars light, the rumble, the diesel, the smoke, the grit, the horns!!!

I do miss seeing the Southern Pacific in action. At least I can re-live it in some small way with my N-scale SP trains! :)

    Life is good! :)

  • filthy, grimey SP engines w/the old typeset "southern pacific" on the side-with an occasional "cotton belt" loco in the same lineup ....YEAH!!!

  • One person doesn't have a soul!

  • Great video! Were those SD 45's locomotives? They sure sound like it! I remember those old grey and red SP's!

  • that union pacific's thinking "i may not be leading this train yet but soon, soon sp will see the power of up!!! "

  • Those UP SD40-2's are a sign of things to come....

  • dope. I just blew out my speakers blasting this video.

  • excellent sound of 645!

  • Wow. thats gotta be the best sounding EMD lash up ever!

  • vintage SP, today's railroading will never compare to the glorious past of the SP.

  • @Illifornia2000 Correct, that is why it is hardly worth railfanning these days. All the best roads went to hell.

  • How awesome is EMD power.................those turbo 645's sound brilliant!!!!!!!!!!, please correct me if I'm wrong are the loco's SD45, SD40, SD40T-2 and a "snoot nose" SD40?, either way great video and thanks for posting.

  • The full throttle and horn say 'Outa my way"

  • great video of throttle up on the old EMD's. i miss the SP.

  • @JoaoT805 no kidding those fruit block reefer trains were famious on SP over donnor pass and on Tahapcapi pass I miss the Mrs lights and SP Nathen P3 horns

  • Where is Caliente? Is it in California?

  • It's in California, between Bakersfield and Tehachapi on the UP line over the Tehachapi mountains

  • @cz17west there is also a Caliente in Nevada and it's a railroad town as well.

  • @cz17west UP line. Right! Only because they bought it. They never did anything close to accomplishing it.

  • That reminds me of standing at Glendale, CA station as a train cleared Taylor Yard behind it (heading north) and got under way hard for that long climb on out through Palmdale etc, great stuff.

  • I love SD 45s....and mars light even better. Great video

  • agree with you 100% Nathan P3's twin beam Mars lights and flashing ditchlights now that would be a combonation on the UP tunnel motors I miss the SSW/SP myself.

  • I love it when he opens it up at 00:30

  • Man those were the days!! It makes me cry to watch UP creeping over these grades like they're scared of them. Super video !!!

  • I agree with every thing you said. One thing though. SP never went away, they just went north of the Canadian border. I'm being sarcastic when I say that, because CP Rail is exactly like SP.

  • WOW, you gotta love this engineer. He didn't blow his horn to let us hear the engines throttling up. Great video!!!

  • if you have more stuff like that than upload away

    5 STARS great video!!!!!

  • Another GREAT ONE! Love the sound of SD40's going through the Notches to full throttle!! This train was gearing up for the start of the 2.3 % grade for the next 17 miles!

  • Always love SP...great video and audio of the incline

  • An awesome video! Love the sound of those locos.

  • Amazing video...nothing like the SP! Gotta love the Mars light...very cool. DRGW and SP Forever!!!

  • Mars lights rule espically when its on a KCS ICG or SP/SSW it would be awsome to have Mars Lights and Falshing ditch lights that would be too cool Andy Bowe what kind of Horns did SP use?

  • Even as a 5 year old back in the 60's I loved SP engines. I remeber my dad pulling me back at the yard as I tried to get closer to the power of them. I wanted to be right next to the engine when they throtteled up.

  • If UP would have had the attitued like BN and left things be, then It would have been a cool merger, but because UP took over SP like Germany took over poland They forever destroyed SP. Shame things couldn't have worked out differently.

  • DUDE, what u smokin BN took over ATSF Like germany. UP is so screwed up in the numbering systems. We got patched units 10 years after the merger Atleast i can say i saw Tunnel units unpatched, I cant say that about SD45 OR F45

  • Long live the SD45's

  • Awesome video!! That sounded so cool, and that mars light was really cool!! Great video!!

  • Run 8, outta the gate, Sweet sounding 645's

  • In this video, a hint of things that sadly eventually came. You may put the S.P. out of oblivion as an independent company, but you can't take the S.P. out of the Southern Pacific fans. The S.P. lives on.

  • Classic SP Man! Doesn't get any better than this!

  • Zrtok, back then in the 80s UP and SP always ran in power pools!

  • Note the Union Pacific getting started on borging the SP...

  • 1980's railroading (in the west), SP style.

  • Oh man, six motor EMDs thottling up, fantastic! Even some orange PFEs! Got any vid of the GEs from that era, U30/33Cs?

  • Cool Mars light.

  • He has 2 other videos of SP mars lights in action dude

  • I Loved the Mars light!

  • Keep the SP videos coming! Great Stuff! This one has a lot of foreshadowing with those UP engines on the train.

  • good point right there

  • Another one to add to SP action

Did this train have mid train helpers?

  • Don't know. Could have with the way it was accelerating

  • If i know my railroading correctly on the SP most trains heading up mountain grades had 4 diesels on the front and 6 units at midtrain as helpers on Techahapi and Donner (example the eastbound between Bealville and Cliff that you shot)
