  • Best version of this song. Strong vocals and smooth keyboards.

  • That was the second version back in 1984 with MJ's vocals

  • the song is so amazing !

  • The people who bash this guy are too stupid to realize he was a keyboard player for MJ. He didn't "steal" or "copy" anything from MJ. They were friends and music partners.

  • Great energy in this version! Many people will prefer MJ's "new" version & vocals but I prefer the instrumental backing here.

  • When i was young i got my azz whipped for singing the robot part "You just want to play my BA-LLS!!!!! LMAO!!! Sing that in the robot voice!!!

  • sounds more sincere than MJ's version.

  • Yellow Magic Orchestra is the best ....

  • Yellow Magic Orchestra is the best ....

  • Got to see MJ in concert in Germany. Greg was part of the band. Best part of the concert was the intermission. Everyone in the band had a solo. Greg kicked it off first. EVERYONE KICKED ASS!!!!!

  • This is the best version.

  • best version is Clapton

  • almost as good as ymo's version!

  • I love this song I like all these covers but MJ's is just in my opinion the best version of them all

  • W Greg Phillinganes historical keyboardman of Michael Jackson solo tours! Great musician and great voice! I like also recent posthoumous MJ's version.

  • Better than Eric Clapton's version, but nothing beats Michael's.

  • omg...what ever happened to MTV, VH1 and BET...and music videos!! where have they gone?

  • I Love Greg Phillinganes! This was my Favorite song in the 80's, he's a great performer and has done a lot in the music world for many years. Love it, Love it!

  • not bad but I prefere Michael's version, it is powerful.

  • @Wellenreiterable

Actually, Greg's version IS Michael's version, or at least MJ's Thriller version. This is how Michael's cover version of Behind the Mask originally sounded like, the only difference being Michael's vocals instead of Greg's vocals. The recent 2010 release of the song is actually a remix of Michael's version. It would have been more interesting to hear MJ's Thriller version rather than the posthumous one.

  • @Jagged85 Thanks for the information,I like Behind the mask and ,yes it would be interesting to hear MJ's Thriller version.

In my comment I mean I prefere Michaels voice.sorry

  • I really like Greg's voice. I can't believe he didn't become a superstar. I like it better than Michael's for this song.

  • I like the choire part in the end "OoooooHoooHooOUUuUuuuuu". They could have put that in MJs version too. Which is superior anyhow.

  • This version is marginally better. However, Greg is blatantly singing an MJ version with all MJ's vocal ad-libs intact. The version on MJ's posthumous album has basically been ass raped. If MJ finished it, it would have been leagues better than all versions.

  • @jl5000 Correct.

  • i actually like this and michael's version. i'm not a fan of eric clapton's version

  • Michael Jackson version is completely another world , he brought this song to a different level of entertainment.

  • The michael jackson version is the best.

  • Amazing song i like it very much

  • Y'ever heard of Songs in the key of Life? Give me the Night by George Benson? Lionel Richie? Rufus and Chaka Khan? Lee Ritinour? Paul Simon, Al Jarreau? Off The Wall and Thriller by MJ? Don't lets get started about this "nobody"...

  • nice version..... but Micheal Jackson's is way better!!!!!!!

  • THE GREG PHILINGANES VERSION IS BETTER THAN MICHAEL JACKSONS OR ERIC CLAPTONS VERSION !!

  • Wow! Greg Philingenes is not only great keyboarder. He is good singer too.

  • goldie lookin chain - your mothers got a penis

  • MJ is a indian giver Greg !

  • Well good, beautiful song but I still think I like Michael Jacksons version better- sorry folks! X x

  • i love this but i like MJ'S one better but who actually WROTE THE SONG? ? o.O

  • @celebrityfan1990 it was written back in 1979 by japaneese synth pop pioneers Yellow Magic Orchestra, but Michael added the lyrics and the new version was then sung by Greg Phillinganes in 1984 and he released it as a single in 1985. It was a huge hit for him. One year later, in 1986 it was recorded and relesed as a single by Eric Clapton andd almost simultaneousely a former member of Yellow magic Orchestra, Ryuichi Sakamoto recorded the song with Michaels lyrics and he too had a hit with it...

  • @vibria7000

Actually, YMO first produced the song in 1978 for a Seiko advert and they performed it live that year too, before releasing the studio version in 79. It was a revolutionary song, as one of the first pieces of synth-pop music, a genre that dominated the 80s. It had a big influence on the young MJ and producer Quincy Jones when they first heard it in the late 70s, so much so that they wanted to cover it in Thriller, but legal issues prevented it, despite Sakamoto's approval.

  • This is the MJ demo, sung by Phillinganes. We can even hear Michael beatboxing at the end.

  • @dirtydiana853 yeah your right, I can hear it

  • @JeroenK MJ only added lyrics. The song was brought to his attention by QJ when they were making Thriller. The guys who wrote the song are Japanese.

  • @ihabtara What are you talking about? Go and get your facts straight

  • What a amazing song i have heard eric claptons and michael jackson version of this song this one is really good i like all three versions. THIS SHOULD BE A NUMBER ONE SONG...............

  • Better than Jackson

  • Michael's version is so good.

  • it was writen for the jaksons 5 it was sung by marlen and was done also by magic yallow occhestra in 1979 and Quincy Jones taiked mj from releasing in Thriller in 1982 so Eric Clapton did it

  • i read it was for Off The Wall and considering on Michael it says 1979 I'm assuming that's correct. Eric Clapton also has a version. Same words or thereabouts so I'm confused who really wrote it. Mj's version is the best in my opinion. By far.

  • lol i just totally cracked up when Greg was doing "hee hee"

    only MJ can do that

  • Waahahahaah this is tragic. What the hell was this guy thinking covering a song that God himself, MJ, had already sung? Where Michael makes want to weep this makes me hurl. Phillingay or whatever his name is should eat shit and die, same goes for that Crapton dude, trying to cover the master. As for those Chinese guys who 'wrote' this song, I bet Michael walked by singing this on the street and they copied it on their tragic synthesizers. MJ rules all! Thumbs up if you are with me.

  • @JeroenK Hold on...Do you really know who Greg Phillingaines is? Do you know whose songs he's turned to gold just by playing and/or arranging them? His name should be right up there with Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones...Real musicians know. Do some research on this great man. If you don't know, child, shut yer mouth.

  • @craigmusic1707 Pfff, MJ's farts were more musical than anything Philingay or whatever ever producdd.

  • @JeroenK Don't say that about a guy who actually PERFORMED with Michael Jackson.

  • @JeroenK I like u, u made my day. M.J. walk by singing it on the streets & they copied it, (LMAO) but SO TRUE! M.J. could sing three blind mice & made it a Hit, even w/out music, because the passion he put in a song came from his Heart. That's what made him so F-ing Phenomical, then other that just let the lyric fall where they may. He felt what he sang, by placing his sound where he wanted it 2 go, deep down in ur Soul so we could feel it 2. I don't care what ppl say, M.J. was Heavenly SENT!

  • @JeroenK He is Michael's keyboard man and respected in the MJ community;.

apparently Mj himself gave him the song to record so are you bashing MJ''s

decision. We all know Mjs version is KING -but no need to be arrogant with

disrespect for Greg Phillinganes :( Eric clapton or the song writers who apparently

Michael himself admired. you are welcome to your opinion of course, im not wanting

to offend, just stating mine and I just disagree. yes 8 months later :)

  • @IM4MJ2 Thanks man, that was the balanced and rational reply I was looking for. ;-)

  • @JeroenK That you for excepting my reply so Graciously :-)

  • Michael's version BOO BOOS on Greg's vocals...it's like trying to make Dr. Thunder taste like Dr. Pepper...something just don't taste right.

  • michael jacksons version is AMAZING! gives me chills!!

  • BEST VERSION

  • @UrbanGuerilla88 one of the best joke I've ever heard

  • @8dreadLock8 In the words of the late comedian Bill Hicks, "The fact that you don't like it or get it - That's fine. The fact that you have to try and make everybody else feel bad for liking it - THAT'S what makes you an asshole."

  • hearing this now,it sounds like a demo track for MJ,Mike just nailed it...he owns it,totally.

  • Oh my gosh! Michael's version is amazing, epic. His vocals are just out of this world. The best version of this song. I can't stop listening to it in his new album!

Amazing!! Everything about Michae's version is top notch and soo incredible!

  • I dont remember this song at all, but the new version is really awesome....:)

  • Michael version of behind the mask is goin to be a number 1 hit

  • Who is the actress? She's really pretty.

  • Much prefer this to Eric Clapton's version but Micahel Jackson just kicks it hands down.

  • Greg's version is good , Michael Jackson's version is stunning. His vocal is just stand alone awesome :) x

  • Really? I know what I'm going to ask santa claus to bring me this year! :-)

  • wow...think about how amazing this is. this is a great song, but in 1984 everybody was worshiping michael jackson in pop music - fast forward two decades later and after touring the world w/michael jackson he wants to remake your song. that's got to be a great feeling.

  • @1suaveguy I stand corrected! michael jackson actually wrote some of these lyrics wow.

  • Michael Jackson is the best of all time!!!! He is just so far above what any other artist could ever even hope to be!!!!! Love this song!! but Michael transforms this into magic!!!!! Please support Michael's brand new album!!

  • I really want to hear Micheal Jackson sing this song now.

  • @catcookie buy the new MJ album then! :-)

  • @catcookie its on the new album :-) ....my friend, i must say, its pure magic, you can hear the Michaels old original style, the best track. In my opinion a huge hitwonder that will hit all the radiostations very soon!

  • @caNiBe3 lets all request it...we gotta get MJ to #1

  • michael s´ version is the best!

  • The whole Michael album that's gonna be released on Dec.14th is awesome. I listened to entire album on Michael's official website. The songs are awesome, however, I feel at least two songs on that album is not Michael singing. Monster and Breaking News doesn't sound like MJ. It sounds like a voice impersonator. My favorite song on that album is Hollywood Tonight. That song is off the hook! I like all the songs, except the ones that don't sound like Michael.

  • @barnesfam The album has really impressed me.

  • @barnesfam i agree. hard to duplicate the king

  • Just heard MJ's version. It was amazing. I like this, too. But Michael's voice just fucking ROCKED it.

  • You can tell this is heavily influenced by MJ.

  • i got the whole album with all the tracks...more details pm me ;-)

  • It is a great! great version i am just waiting to hear Michael Jackson version i am sure thst it wil be great too.

  • @survivor806 here u go ;-) watch?v=IqO-KsjgCzQ

  • @survivor806 You CAN hear Michael's version. You can listen to the whole album on Michael's official website. And when I mean the whole album, I'm not just talking about 30 ssecond snippets, I'm talking about the full songs.

  • @survivor806 ...my friend, i must say, its pure magic, you can hear the Michaels old original style, the best track. In my opinion a huge hitwonder that will hit all the radiostations very soon!

  • He cant sing, people listen to this song because ymo made a good track

  • 20:20-20:21 & 3:44-3:50 - love this, just like Michael!!!

That is why I've always loved this song

  • This ver is much better than MJ's!!.. ;/

  • @t00sm4rt yes.............and no.i like the music better in this version, but the singing..........helll nah

  • MJ song!! and i lov e 80is also!

  • SHIT this song is freakin' awesome!!! excuse my language, but OMG... I WISH I was born the 80s, I was born in '92, this song is.... just amazing. 80s FOREVER <33

  • @MrsMJLoveAlways i was born in 1980 :-) i know what you mean, i wish was i was born in the 70's

  • Greg Phillinganes is really cool.

Check him out rock out on the keys and backing vocals in the DVD Eric Clapton & Friends 1986.

And, of course, as a member of the band Toto.

He seems a darn cool guy, and apparently quite an underrated musician on the keys, in his vocal capabilities, and in general, as well as seemingly continually being underrated for his being a cool guy.

  • i would love to hear MJ's version

  • @Tangerinez77 Me too. I can't wait to hear his vocals on it, especially on the lines "Who do you love, is it me babe, is it him now, I don't know, HOO!"

  • @Tangerinez77 it's awesome, the old original Michael! the best track

  • reading these comments , looking forward to hearing mike version of the behind the mask awesome !

  • I've been doing some investigating on this song, and gained info from Chris Cadman & Craig Halstead's book called ''Michael Jackson- for the record''. It says it was written by Chris Mosdell & Ryuichi Sukamoto with additional melody and lyrics added by Michael Jackson, when MJ was introduced to this by Quincy Jones during the Thriller sessions. There was a legal battle over royalties which later were resolved. This song has been named as being one of the tracks on MJ's new album ''Michael''.

  • Geren4i: yep that is why Jackson could put credits on it although Sakamoto also wrote the refrain on the original and rerecorded the song in 1987.

  • 2:19 us a dead give away...this song is especial!

  • I can not imagine, how will the version of Michael Jackson?, rock pop...? the only thing I know is that MJ's voice is amazing

  • mike will be killing this song on his upcoming album titled "Michael"

  • song originally written by Michael Jackson, isnt it?

  • @Misayko the lyrics are, but the original song is by yellow magic orchestra. sakamoto is also on the phillinganes song.

  • @lumbia33 okay ^^ this song is on Michael Jacksons upcoming album. im really looking forwar hearing this :P i LOVED this song years ago and always wished Michael would have sung it <3

  • @Misayko yeah, i know it is... so is 'the way you love me', which, if it IS the same song was already released in 2004. so why would they put it again? i personally have no intentions of purchasing this album, as i am not lining the pockets of executives involved in the murder of someone who just "did good business" with them. this is where i stand on that. people are focusing on 'real or fake' songs as opposed to that death contract, and sony would love to keep it that way. peace...

  • I bought this on 12" back in 1982, This is the first time I have heard this in a age! Bloody brill. Love It

  • I bought this on 12" back in 1982, This is the first time I have heard this in a age! Bloody brill.

  • Absolutely awesome. Unfortunately, I foolishly recently sold off my 12"copy on vinyl as part of my record collection. Silly boy !!

  • the 1st time i heard this was on soul train-spring of 85. Lovin it

    ever since

  • I can see why GLC chose to sample this: Awesome!

  • @selbydate16 What GLC song samples this?

  • @TomKayW Your Mothers Got A Penis!!

Yeeesss I got to say it to someone I don't know lol

  • this song wasnt covered by goldie looking chain they sampled it for your mothers got a penis

  • Ryuichi Sakamoto

  • This came out in 1986 or 1987...it once featured on a programme on BBc 2 called No Limits...

  • this song was covered by Goldie Lookin Chain lol

  • @SaucyBegger25 sampled, not covered! nice to know there are more of us out there...

  • This song is nice!

  • amazing song.Greg did a good job.Tho I bet Mike would kill this song.Anyways.I've always loved Greg.He spent lotsa time with Mike, and he was one of his true friends.Love ya Greg,

  • Sorry, this song was written by Michael Jackson in 1979. It was to be used in the Off the Wall album but did not make the cut. Phillinganes was the keyboard player for most of Qunicy Jones songs including Off the Wall. This was the first solo song from Phillinganes in attempt to be a solo artist. Now you really know.

  • @whennif: You are wrong. So sorry, the music was written by Ryuichi Sakamoto (back then member of the Yellow Magic Orchestra) in 1979. Quincy Jones loved the song and showed it to Michael who, later, added lyrics to it. It is not sure whether it was planned for Off The Wall or Thriller, because the recording (if there ever was made one) never leaked. And now, you really know.

  • @EXTENDED91 It was planned for Thriller.

  • @EXTENDED91 and it would have been amazing on thriller. a lot of the non-album tracks from that session are actually better than what ended up on the album, in my opinion.

  • @lumbia33: I second that.. two of them def have to be "hot street" and "nite line".. those would have fit perfectly..

  • @EXTENDED91 'nite line's' arrangement is great! i'm not as into 'hot street'- the arrangement is too straight on. i prefer michael's more polyrhythmic tracks. 'the girl is mine' without mc cartney (and with the strings) is MUCH better than that album version. 'carousel' would have been amazing. and i like 'starlight' over 'thriller' actually. i prefer the positive message. michael's version of 'love never felt so good' (recorded by johnny mathis) is amazing.

  • @lumbia33: again, couldn't agree more.. I made my own thriller double album.. added some extended/instrumental versions of the tracks to the original album, and made a second CD with all these demo tracks..

  • @EXTENDED91 wow...

  • I like this song. It's hard to find it on mp3

  • This is a superb song

  • Greg should stay in the back on the keyboards. Can't sing, can't perform, ain't good looking.Stay in the back.

  • @n49s What's wrong with that?

  • Wow, rare video!!

    Thanx a lot.

(Did you check the YMO's orginal version ?)

  • It's not bad. I think the clapton version is most easy version to listen to and hasn't dated as bad. I think it's the robotic vocals... gives me hacky douche chills.

  • I don't care who wrote this song. MJ should have released this song with his voice. This would have been another huge hit for MJ. I do however like Greg's version of this compared to others.

  • @picposter67 agreed mike would've killed this, even though you can still hear and feel his influence.

  • @Dmixx101 Maybe I am wrong but I'd swear I can actually hear him beatboxing at the end?

  • this song written by ryuichi sakamoto in yellow magic orchestra 1980

  • Not in 1980, but in 1979.

  • Comment removed

  • @muse21100 Really? I love this song and have been looking

    for it for years!

  • @muse21100 1979

  • @muse21100 michael who wrote the song

  • @muse21100 ONLY THE MUSIC, not the lyrics. The lyrics were written by MJ and Chris Mosdell

  • @muse21100 and then purchased by Quincy Jones for the Michael Jackson's Thriller, sadly the song was never released, and the only version of this song avaliable it's with Greg Pillinganes

  • Always liked this song. Did'nt know it was a cover tho I did kno the Greg/Mike affiliation. Great song. Will check YMO version.

  • i like ymo's and gregs just the same...would love to hear mjs version!

  • This song was originally written by Yellow Magic Orchestra. Michael helped with the lyrics. I suggest suggest looking up the original, it kicks ass!

  • Michael Jackson wrote this song together with Philly for the Thriller Album .... But Quincy rejected.

    Michael Jackson R.I.P.

  • RIP Michael Jackson

  • The 12" version of this is brilliant. Thought it was made in 1980 though.

  • 1986

  • Thanks for the ride down memory lane. lmao.

  • The original is better. noone should try to cover a yellow magic orchestra song, ever.

  • This is great.

  • i am THRILLED i found this!

i thought it was a song that excisted ONLY in my head...but it's real! AWESOME *Giggle* it's in my favs so i can watch/listen to it ANYTIME now. Thanks You Tube and Franeckmjstranger!

  • @wandavelez yeah great song. check it on Michael Jackson's new album! It's the bomb!!

  • haven't seen this clip since the 80's on mtv. i love this song!

  • That little stupid dance he does at the end is too funny

  • Michael Jackson wrote this song.

  • YMO(Yellow Magic Orchestra) did.

  • i know ymo did

but michael jackson wrote a text

  • Michael wrote this lyric and recorded this song for "Thriller", but Kei Ohashi(song publisher) refused to put this version in "Thriller".

Few years Later Greg Phillinganes recorded this version using Michael's track. That's true story.
