I'm a Christian Conservative, two groups that get the most mocked by the media. And guess what I do? I do this magical thing called "deal with it." I don't care what other people say and neither should anyone else.
And colleges are hipcorites. Taking off reasonable quotes but allowing students to have truly racist quotes or provocative pictures on their doors.
@gung: You are spreading a developmentally stunted, fear & hate mongering, tinfoil hat-wearing, conspiracy theory by saying that your holier than thou psycho-religious conservative belief system(s) are the most mocked by the media. That is just another defense of the idea that there are only two political belief systems in the world; right and wrong, and "If you're not with us, you're against us!"
By the time kids reach college, they're already taught conformity - all sitting the same way, all dressing the same, all giving approvable answers to test questions to get a better grade... if you want campuses to be bastions of free thought, start teaching free-thinking from the get-go. I went to RIT in the 90's, where there was self-segregation on the part of the students themselves - even sitting on opposite sides of common study areas, en masse. Blacks left, whites right, both saddening.
It would be fine if it truely was an election by the majority, but there was so much fraud in this election, it is not legal. I am so offended by the leftist comments that I want them to stop, but obviously they have a double standard. I have a right to offend you. Read the Constitution. If you don't like what I say, then don't listen or look. The colleges are dumbing down our children, so that they can be controled. Free thought, free speech, do they even know what that means anymore?
Nkaed Wombat is a retard. Conservites weren't protesting the electon, just the health care bill. And it was perfectly legal to carry firearms... so what's the problem? Can republicans not protest anymore? Or only the left be able to?

After all, initiatives for healthcare equated with Nazism? The fuss of Barack Obama's middle name? Bringing guns to a rally with the pres? Shouting at the president? Man, they just can't take the loss of a single election, which is weird since they allegedly stand for democracy (rule of the majority.)

But don't blame only the liberals for this attitude. I hear lots of mean and dismissive, belittling attitudes from those that call themesleves "conservative." (Se some in this forum too.) What do these terms mean anymore? And as to one party government, that is what we have been having with the Republicans, with a couple of breaks in between. Bush imposed the Homeland Security fascism upon us, ironically moving in the Nazi direction.
Is this satire? "Moving us in the Nazi direction?" What are you able to do today that you were unable to do under Bush? What symmetry do you find between the efforts of the HSA and the systematic round up and murder of Jews, the disabled, homosexuals, etc? What are some examples of conservatives attempting to stifle free speech?

Have a conversation on my cell phone or talk on a discussion list like this WITHOUT THE GOVERNMENT AGENCIES LISTENING IN. The requirements for search warrants or phone taps were considerably lowered. So various agencies of the government are able to regularly monitor what we say, type or listen to, without our knowledge or permission or without approval by a judge based on probable cause. Personal freedoms can be limited by the government simply declaring you suspected terrorist activities.
There is virtually no formal requirement for them to justify this. I am not personally worried. It is the long-term principle and implications that trouble me. I am definitely not the first person to comment on this. It is well-documented elsewhere.
This is contradictory. If they are fascist, they can't be liberal. If someone is liberal, they could not have fascist ideas. People who want to call themselves liberal need to evaluate their attitudes and see if they are repressive or liberating.
says who, u? they become fascists whn they stop tolerating others right 2 disagree, nt 2 mention freedom of speech, start labeling them w/labels like, hater, domestic terrorist, etc & work towards legislating these rights away & moving towards 1 party gov.
"Liberal" has become meaningless. It's just as stupid as "African-American" or "Black." It was originally the term for people who believed in laisez-faire capitalism and small government. Now it means leftist. People don't usually pay attention to the etymology of the labels they apply to themselves.
Great video. Great points. But *please* next time get rid of the music when people are speaking. It's distracting and reduces the focus on the speaker and his words. Thanks.
Thanks. For what it's worth, the music in the introduction was good, and it was well produced. It was just when Dave Barry was speaking that it was distracting. He was the focus, anything taking away from that reduces the impact of him and what he is saying.
@TheFIREorg Yeah, it's not that the music is bad--it's just so fast in tempo that it's completely out of touch with Barry's relaxed mood. If the speaker were really quick and loud, it would work, but not with Dave Barry.
@TheFIREorg Not only is the music distracting, but that scratching record noise when someone says something mildly surprising? Awful! When will people learn how clichéd that is?
Isn't it amazing that David Horowitz and Ann Coulter are met with firing squads at speaking engagements on campuses, but Aquavelvajad from Iran speaks to a perfectly civil audience at Columbia?
Inside every far-leftist is a totalitarian waiting to get out.
Get my facts straight? Here's a fact for you: The current Iranian regime kills homosexuals for sport. Ann Coulter is an author. I watched the speech the dictator made and he was met with less hostility than some Ann Coulter speeches I've seen. In fact, I work at Columbia University and I know damn well what kind of people they are.
Dude, I'm not saying that the mentality there isn't disproportionately misdirected. But did you actually watch his speech? They were yelling and jeering at him when he made the claim that there were no homosexuals in Iran. Like I said, there wasn't a riot like there would have been if, say Rush Limbaugh showed up. But they weren't exactly shaking his hands and begging his autograph either. They may be misguided fools there, but they're not COMPLETE idiots.
Dude, go back and read your last comment very carefully. Are you saying the students would be justified in rioting if Limbaugh showed up? If you do, then how the fuck can you compare a talk radio show host to a dictator that might cause World War Three? If they riot over Rush but not Achmedinajad then yes, they are COMPLETE idiots!!! I hope you realize you made my point for me with your inability to see who the real threat is.
Didn't some students try to smack Ann with a pie in the face at one of her college speaking engagements? I also seem to remember, was it tom tancredo whose speaking engagement was shut down with vandalism and near riot? I think there's even a video here on youtube of the event.

I believe that these Progressive (Liberal) ideas are the most INSIDIOUS and CONTROLLING plagues of our time.
The funny thing is that "liberalism" used to stand for maximum individual rights and liberty. Look it up on Wikipedia. But over time, in the US it has somehow come to mean censorship, government coercion and wealth redistribution, all of which fly in the face of our Founders' beliefs.
Our founders WERE liberals. But now, the name has been stolen, and you get to choose between the Democrats (fake liberals) and Republicans (fake conservatives), who both seem to hate liberty and individual rights.

@safe: The funny thing is "liberalism" has ALWAYS stood for maximum individual rights and liberty! It still does!! Our founders were liberals in a certain context, such as with the Boston Tea Party and freedom from England. (Which has NOTHING to do with the modern Tea Party movement!) But, many of them were racist, misogynistic, slaveowners, who were in these many ways more conservative than many conservatives today.
@safe: Political incorrectness is a conservative policy, not a liberal one, that is supported by conservatives much more so than those of ANY other political philosophy, including liberals!
You are a troll for pushing such a disgustingly stupid and politically and historically ignorant ideology.
Codes are always about controlling the behavior of others through the use of power.
While I agree with all of the rules you would include in you code, I reject putting it into any kind of formal code, as it has and can be used abusively to shut down voices of those with views that differ from those in charge of enforcement.
Look at all of the examples of ideas labeled "hate speech" these days.

Funfact: in Britain, university faculty members *can* be fired for voicing untoward beliefs in the course of their job.
Nobody seems to regard it as a bad thing, or as hypocritical, either. I can't quite get past that.

Rather than no speech code, where any one can shout down anyone else at any time, why doesn't FIRE promote a model speech code?
Something like:
- Allow for orderly debate and discussion,
- Be civil to one another, and
- Don't interrupt classes.
Just a thought from an old Civil Libertarian.
