Throughout the match, every time Martina gets the point, she seemed so confident that she can take on the great Champion Steffi. Steffi being the great player as always, and ever so humble, the exact opposite of her opponent (Martina's arrogance didn't last her to be the no.1). I love Steffi and I like the way she moves in court, there is that certain grace I've never seen in other players. Shame time has come for her retirement. Watching ladies' tennis is not the same without her.
you clearly have no idea what you're saying. "being in a different league" in english means a _huge_ difference in playing levels. if this were to be true, hingis would not have won a set in this very match.
but ill agree that steffi has the more astonishing record, both on and off the court.
Let's face it, Graf gave Hingis all sorts of things to think about by beating her in the FO 99 final. I'm sure that Hingis thinks about that match even today now and then ...
Hingis was 16 here and was entering her prime. She won Filderstadt and Oakland just before that Masters and by January 1997, she was pretty much in it.
Steffi Graf is so amazing. I wonder, how could she do it with a predominantly slice backhand?! She just keeps it so deep and is so consistent with it. I don't see such a deep slice in many players today. Not at all.
I think Steffi is a great champion! the only one my favourite player. Her sliced backhand used to be sooo good. She even could make so winners with it!!
Has Martina Hingis and Justin Bieber ever been seen in the same
room together???

I'm sure she does, not too much about Graf though, because she was on her way beating her in straights.

Many players "were on their way to beat" Graf in slam finals.
Navratilova at FO 87, Wim 88, USO 89, Sabatini at Wim 91, Novotna at Wim 93, Fernandez at FO 93, Sanchez at 96 FO come to mind ...

seles FO90, 92, AO93... oh no sorry seles actually won those ! :p

Doesn't change the fact that most of the time Seles lost to Graf.
Sometimes even 06 16 or 26 16.

Therefore the uptight selection of words, the meticulous retrieval of information, the close-to-insanity attention to details and the twisted mind.
I'm really not surprised :)
i work in communications. Being online is part of the job :)

why did they play 5 sets! martina was 15 here...who let such a thing happen

Was Graf's fault. She should have won in 3 sets. Was injured, though (Steffi that is).
Hoffenheim08 2 years ago
Was injured every other set? lol Ok.

Was injured during the whole match.
Hoffenheim08 2 years ago
Sure. So was Hingis, 1, 3, 5.

Hingis lacked stamina.
Same as in later years.
When she faced top opposition in slam finals she usually faltered.

Steffi makes using slice look so cool. Even though her backhand drive wasn't great, she made it look special by using it occasionally :)
I just hope her wimbledon exhibition gets aired on TV this year.
