  • That is some mighy fine bass work! Wow...

  • Why don't you just play all of it at the top of the neck?

  • @Lordwatson303

'cause thats the way i play it dude.

  • by far and away the most accurate and un-plodding of all the Smiths bass cover-ers on here.

  • Thanks for sharing and thanks for putting the tabs on it!!!

  • Hello chiasson65, thanks so much for the tab, I did a version for you. it's no where near your level of competency and I just wanted to say thanks for being such a cool chap and posting the tab with your awesome vid. will you check out my version if you get a chance? all the best stay cool and thank you again

  • Amazing!

How long you play bass? And how much time did you pass training in the week?

  • @rafadelboni

i've been playing for 30 yrs and practiced an average of 20 hours a month, give or take..... that would be my best guess.

  • I love what you and rourke do at 1:10. AMAZING. is there a term for that

  • Brillliant

  • For tuning advice open the "show more" tab...............

    cheers,

    kev

  • sweet, very sweet playing, this has got to the hardest Rouke riff (Bigmouth IS easier!)

    thanks for this

  • Wow! Nice man!

  • For anyone who doesn't understand what "Sharper than standard" is let me explain.

I have been trying to play it too but somehow I couldnt because when you play it in standard its sound out of tune because. For example the first note of the bass is neither A# nor B its rather a note in between A# and B. A quarter tone.

So if you want to play this just tune your bass according Rourke bass or just shift the songs pitch until it sounds ok with your standard tuned bass.

  • your a freaken beast XD

  • i play it but it doesnt sound the same doo i tune it differently.?

  • Great cover man

  • Great cover man

  • HEY! CAN YOU MAKE A BASS COVER OF 'THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE'! PLZ YOU ARE AMAZING AT THE BASS... SOOOO THE NEW COVER WILL BE AWESOME

  • Classic bass playing. Morrissey's voice ..Just so beautiful. Treat to listen.

  • WOW THE BEST 'THIS CHARMINGMAN" BASS COVER I HAVE EVER HEARD I SEEN OUR OTHER SMITHS COVERS REALLY GOOD! PLZ POST MORE!

  • nice video bro thanks for the taps

  • great work ,the smiths rule ,end of story!

  • ,good job.watch my vídeos !

  • your the 1st person i've seen put tabs down with also a decent clear video which is hugely helpful. for the breakdown/chorus, you play the riff differently to how you've tabbed it. they all seem to be th same notes as far as i can tell but would you be able to tabbed it out the way you've played it?

  • cracking job + really helpful

  • Good job man.

  • So, to be crystal clear: does the tab shown in the video correspond to the bass tuning of F#-B-E-A? Or is it standard tuning?

chiasson65: What do you mean when you say "it's close to standard just a bit sharper?"

  • its a bit sharper than standard

  • @chiasson65 Thank you.

  • awesome vid man, real helpful!!!

  • doesn't sound the same without a pick...

  • I love your covers :) Helps me out for the rhythm when i can hear the bass clearly in the songs. But i have to cover with a guitar -.-

I just have one question : what bass would you recommend for wants to learn bass ?

  • hella good. you make me wanna go buy a bass right now. lol.

  • holy shit....for a second there i thought it was andy playing. you're hella good.

  • Awesome man i really like this, I'll try and learn it from this video.

  • MOst Smiths stuff was in F# on bass.

  • Andy Rourke is probably one of my favourite bass players, and you did this really well man!

  • Strewth.. I have to learn this for a gig on Friday. Think I will try the F# tuning first. Great playing, old chap. I salute you. Not a fan of the Smiths but no denying the quality of musicianship. Johnny Marr's contribution has long been acknowledged but Andy Rourke should be recognised equally. Ah, the lot of the bass player!

  • use a pick

  • Good man ....congratulations!!! good play!!! This charming bass!!

  • Wow great , Bravo, that is quiet a hard one. I did it as i was youngest , but spent a whole year on it, and finally find the clue, the key, the how to...thanks to share it.

  • Nice one for having the tab up. You should publish it on the internet; all the others are badly inaccurate. Good video.

  • Thanks so much, I can play this now because you were good enough to supply on screen tabs. PS. Check out my Smiths videos

  • Andy Rourke was without a doubt the Paul McCartney of the 80's :-i Greatjob!

  • Did you pitch shift this song up half a step?

  • no. this is the original recording. i did have to tune my bass a bit sharp to play it though.

    kev

  • Learnt. Thanks for the easy lesson.

  • Nice bassline, great cover.

  • very good!

  • Ahh mate class :) Im gonna learn this Smiths are Fantastic :) Is There other ways of playin this When i Tab it on Like Ultimate guitar And 911 Guitar there different ? :) Wb thanks

  • I so want to learn to play bass T__T you're great fellow x

  • Andy plays it with a plectrum, that's why you haven't got his twangy sound!

  • People always comment how incredible Metallica were at writing music and playing the guitar (especially Hetfield) at such a young age... and rightly so..

Well, for me The Smiths have them beat. The quality of Bass Lines (majority written by Johnny Marr) played by Rourke, the lyrics of Morrissey, the guitar sounds, rhythms and playing styles of Johnny Marr... and even the drumming of Mike Joyce... for guys at such a young age... still amazes me!

  • @wiganowl05

you are mistaken, Andy Rourke wrote all the bass lines, it pisses me off when people say this shit!!! if in doubt...ask Johnny Marr

  • @wiganowl05 rourke wrote the bass lines

  • @wiganowl05 morrisey is the only good thing they had other than that there music was trash

    Metallica is ultimate

  • @wiganowl05 : I read that Marr was 23 when the Smiths split. Incredible really...

  • @wiganowl05

Uh, Andy wrote all the bass lines AND Mike Joyce was an awesome drummer, there's no need to under appreciate their contributions to the band.

  • @wiganowl05 I don't think marr wrote the basslines

  • Yeah, that's how I play it. I find I just have to tune it slightly higher than standard tuning. Playing in the positioning you do also is good practice for making your fingers move faster

  • That's funny you say that, I just learned that song (well, my way, by ear) recently on my friends bass. Great song and fun to play

  • Wow excellent ! This was one of this first songs I tried to learn when I first started learning bass - quite a challenge, and fast tempo (rewind, stop, play, rewind...) sigh.. I wish I never gave up

  • don't give up. Try another Smiths song like There Is A Light That Will Never Go Out

  • Can write tabs for The Night has openend eyes??please

  • wonderful!

  • Just great, you make it look effortless!

  • Hey i am new can any1 teach me how to tune in F#? how is it? F#BEA?

  • you are correct. just tune your open E to an F# and tune the rest of the bass in 4ths, F#BEA. bear in mind this tab is NOT done with the bass tuned to F#. it's close to standard just a bit sharper.

  • A joy to watch, great playing!

  • Excellent stuff, been trying to work out the Hatful of Hollow version

  • great cover, cheers for the tabs btw, all the ones ive found online were rubbish

  • Completely flawless! You makes us all proud!

  • hey, great job

    is it standered tuning?

  • its a warwick steamer. or summin maybe a rockbass we carnt see the head stock.

  • warwick thumb next through body

  • i think this is the best bass cover of this song ive seen on youtube. good job!

  • thats a cort of some sort, right?

  • Looks like a warwick to me

  • nice job, man!

  • Are you cranking all of your tone nobs?

  • not quite but fairly high on the treble side.

  • well played,iv always loved this bassline,i dont know why tho but whenever u work out and are able to play a bassline u love it loses a lil bit of its magic

  • i no wat u mean

  • u kick ass at bass

but not as good as andy with a great deal of respect

  • God!! I love this song!!!! this is soo beautiful!! :) greetings from Poland!! :)

  • MINT!!

  • Thanks for the tabs

  • i love the bass in "this charming man" and this is fantastic !!!

  • Thank you for posting the tabs! Please do the same for the other Smiths bass song when you get a chance. You're going to heaven for this!

  • grr i wanna play this song on the bass soooo bad but i cant figure it out.

    help??

  • i'll try and get the tabs superimposed on the vid but it'll take me some time.....keep checking in.

    kev

  • That was very good!

  • So gifted! I'd love to play like this..

  • superb !

  • Yeah, I tuned everything a quarter-step up. Its pretty close.

  • the first note after the guitar comes in is a B. you have to tune up (if i remember correctly) to meet the tuning that the band uses.

  • What tuning are you in for this?!

    It sounds great! Wonderful.

  • fantastic man, the best iv heard!

  • Sweet baby you got in your arms!!!

  • I wish you could make one where you hear only the bass because you are good as hell

  • great man!!!!!!

  • Excellent bass part!

    Best on youtube

    Sounds just like the original

  • Finally! Someone who actually can do this bass line! Thanks for posting!
