If you are willing to part with some coin (initiation fee), it isn't a bad idea to get into the Operating Engineers union. If you can ride out the slow times, you'll probably get called to work sooner than you expect, and thereby have the chance to prove yourself. But then again, it depends on how busy the industry is.
