Apparently some people haven't heard any of Joni Mitchell's music since Big Yellow Taxi... this brilliant version of the Floyd heartbreaker is representative of her musical style at the time, I find it compelling in a way the original isn't though you'll get zero complaints from me about anything Roger Waters does. A musical genius performing a work of genius, what could there be to complain about?
I absolutely love Joni Mitchell! But I must say that this song did her no justice whatsoever. not her vocal style or range at all. Love Floyd, but don't dig Joni singing this one.
Very diferent for joni but she done well and her interpretation was fitting to the mood of the arrangement. Its just a difficult song regardlesss of how simple floyd can make it sound especially live,
@mrph1983 Her voice went through so many changes. Used to be very high to med. range and completely smooth (which takes massive power), then she lost it all, and I think here she's either trying to return or on the way to when she lost her voice. Mine went through the same epic fail you mention. Surgery, etc., yrs later now have big bottom voice and high head voice, struggles galore in the middle. Good post, anyway!
@swifturtle12 it seems unavoidable that music should be reduced to biological determinism. In that sense, music it is nothing more than a sport. The strongest voice wins.

She was invited to sing, is it prohibited? People come up with the same bullshit about David Bowie singing Arnold Lane.

As a Floyd head from way back I find this a pool copy. It sounded like Tina Turner. I like her old stuff.

James Galway's flute is understated and absolutely exquisite!

@cupperoni thanks for pointing that out

awesome!the better version!

I think her voice is awful. That vibrato is totally out-of-control. You want fabulous, try ann wilson's version of this song.
tudorhistoryguy 3 years ago 2
Oh it's not 'awful', she hasnt even got that much of a vibrato anymore.
jmiller05 3 years ago
I have to agree, her voice kinda ruined this part of the concert for me.

Joni Mitchell has been a big influence on both Ann and Nancy Wilson.

shows her incredible mastery of the art after all these years. She's like Alberta Hunter, she just gets better with age.Ilfrance
