QUESTION AND LITTLE HELP!? I want to explore my musical horizons, but I'm not sure where to start. I like sooooo much melody of this song and am interested in music in the style of this song. Can anyone recommend a similar music?
when u hear this song with open ears and all 3 eyes...its a totally liberating meaning...i was 8 when this came out but LOVED IT and still do...religion is the smile on a dog...
@serfcity1 the late 80's and the early 90's was kind of the same scene musically, this was one of the early examples of this sound, Alice and Chains also came out with Man in the Box around this time, Cracker came out with Teen angst and Smashing Pumpkins came out with their first album that year
@serfcity1 I was, albeit in baby form. But I'd say the song wasn't exactly too far ahead of its time. I mean R.E.M.had already released 6 albums by them; and they don't exactly typify the classic 80s vibe. Several of what would become "grunge" bands had already started out by '88 as well.
Vice versa; some late 90s & even new millenium music sounds like it could be from the 70s or 80s.
I think you make some good points that are hard to argue with.
But REM was before its time and everything it produced after Green was shit, imo.
I think your argument is a fair one in the sense that many early 90s bands that made this type of sound famous were already playing music in the late 80s.
It just hadn't caught on commercially yet.
And there is no doubt that some late-90s and early 2000s music was influenced by early 90s music, but 70s and 80s? Examples?
@serfcity1 Everything after Green was shit? I guess I disagree with that. I mean; if I had to choose my favourite REM album it would be between Murmur, Automatic for the People and New Adventures in Hi-Fi.
But yeah, to my original comment, I guess I was just being a little pedantic just for the sake of it.
Right now I can't really think of any examples. I mean, there are bands today that try to emulate the 80s sound, but I'm not sure how successfully they implement that.
I used to know a girl who looked a lot like her, unfortunately she turned out to be totally unhinged and a danger to herself and others, but she was an interesting person... I haven't thouhgt of her until watching this video
Religion isn't a lie... :p Btw Robotgrass, she makes direct eye contact when she says Religion is a lie in the fog. Anyways this is a pretty amazing song, and the lyrics makes an interesting statement.
@KuvaPefo religion is a lie, when theres hundreds of cults and religions claiming they are the only one, obviously they are not all telling the truth, probrably none of them are
This is, upon a sixth viewing, attempting to be about hallucinogens...or depersonalization, be it results of grief, love, whatever...She makes notice to never make eye contact with the camera, though toward her peripheral band members. On the few close-ups...the lyrics say "choke me in the shallow water, before I get to deep", and then fade to the lack of eye contact. Also, the lyrics seem in tune to forgetting the ego, even by attempt when 'I' attempt to look at you, 'before I get too deep'.
@Numonkei you do realize that the song was wrote before the video was made, right?
To say that the camera angles have anything to do with the lyrics is absurd in the reasoning that the artist has no idea when they are writing the material if there will even be a video produced. Not to mention that they have no control over what the director and producer of the video has in mind for the "visiono" of the video. She may have even been told to NOT look at the camera.
Before the 90s took root there was a short but brief hippy college movement, that thank god, died. Not to mention the Jazz rock dance combos that also died, thank god.
@Faelsun ...Pretty sure they didn't die, just lost the 'Hippy' aspect of what you describe. And not only didn't die...thrived. Dave Matthews, Bela Fleck & Tones, Phish, these were not small-time acts, but were a draw to very diverse crowds and continue to be so.
@Numonkei Oh God your late, your talking about a whole different era and sub genre of music than I am. I hate it when kids who were born in the mid fucking 90s act like they know anything. I am referring to acts like Nina Cherry and and EMF who did jazzy shitty dance beat crap with psudo jazz backdrops. @Faelsun Yes, I see what you mean, you meant take root as in pre-90's, not mid 90's.... I was but a toddler at the '85 point...though I maintain the 'hippie revival' has been in perpetual motion, pretty much rising and falling with availability of festival/tour elements, (whether they exist or not)...but I understand your point a bit more. I recall the first thought that came to my mind when I saw the video...shortly before replying to you...was, the THESE folk have taken hallucinogens.
@Numonkei But it's not THAT late. I've supposedly existed a quarter of a century myself, but always assumed this track to be more '95 than '85...that surprised me, this song is older than me. The production value is fantastic here.
i heard this song 1,000+ times when i was 8 then i got to be 22 years old playing guitar since i was 10 and then this is one of those songs is like damn... i miss the 90's i relooked alot of the music of my time and realized how muscially genius it was
i like this song alot it's interesting because this sounds like a song from the 90s not the 80s even though it's late 80s. she could be one of the first to usher in the 90s female artist sound.
I used to listen to edie brickell at 13 years old and watch myself crying in front of the mirror and wierdly it made me feel so good!!! Im 35yrs now and have learnt better coping stratagies now !!

@SavoyTruffle78 Emma Bunton's cover of this was truly dire. I seriously considered training a squadron of suicide squirrels and setting them on her for that.

Hello Everybody!!
There’s nothing that I want more than to come true my dream.
Day and night I always dream with open eyes.
When I sing I can be who really I am and there’s a me no one knows.
Now I can say “Music is who I am not what I do”
Singing is a way to express oneself emotions through a song.
All I just want is a chance.
Please stop by my channel and check out some covers I’ve uploaded.
I’ll be grateful, Thank you so much!!
