First one of these I saw was played by Robert Taylor. Seems they're catching on. Please don't make me buy one. I have enough trouble playing the regular ones I have.
Looks like something out of Alice in Wonderland...
@volpericky Thats was the intention i think. there is a stationary camera, and a hand held camera. A hand held camera is never going to be perfectly still. But i see where you are coming from, but personally i quite like the way the video was shot :)
@SafetyMan911 haha, I took some lessons with craig and he was kind enough to let me play each of his guitars to try them out. they sound like pianos! it's ridiculous
@Rossfisher123 it's not only "listen to craig"..it's listen to a classical guitar, or anything like that..i'm from brazil, and, here, i see people listen pretty much pop music (lady gaga, justin bieber, that crap), some local musics (axe, samba), and rock, or anything that has a eletric guitar (some bands are as "cool" as jonas brothers - even worse anda gayer)..i don't know a person that knows who is craig d'andrea..it's sad, but it's true :)
@McGrottomaster haha, at the beginning i didn't realize it either, i was trying to learn it by ear and noticed that something was weird..looking at the coments i saw someone saying that was seven...anyway :b
@lusapeiro Igor Presnyakov plays the (rare) Russian 7-string guitar but I don't know that it's configured or tuned the same as this modern one. Do you ever listen to Igor? He's pretty amazing! I've played guitar for 35 years but I've never heard anything like that!
@lusapeiro Well, hey, mon ami -- type him in here on You Tube and you will be mightily impressed. He plays acoustic covers on all manner of songs [wrires his own stuff too] so just pick one that you like. I have his best on a songlist accessible thru my profile so you could go there too... you won't regret having done so. If you're a guitar player then you'll be an instant Igor fan. If you go thru my profile, check out *Maxim's* best songs too -- he's a wonder.
@lusapeiro Well, I listen to pretty much all music, rap excepted. My favorite is Classical [mostly Modern Period, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Berg, Villa-Lobos, Webern, etc.] but I still play Classic Rock around the campfire. That Igor got me re-interested in my acoustic guitar a few months back. You didn't offend me at all. That's impossible to do anyway -- I'm a retired Law Enforcement officer so I've been cursed by the best and drenched in piss and puke too. All one can do is laugh about it.
@nelsonfnduarte Yeah, he definitely messed that up (but it's totally okay because pros have a right to make mistakes, even though they are more than human =D). You can tell because he gets it right when he repeats that little theme. And it's got nothing to do with tone change...
in the moment you think he's playing "wrong" you actually can see his fingers and his face. both don't seem to want it another way!
Or maybe the song is pre-recorded.this would match up even better, cause he plays the same.
If you want to be convinced that this is the right note, try to feel the music in this special moment. Try to hear the story he tells and what this note (it's not a chord just one note with its octave) brings into it.
Okay I'm doing grade six classical in a few months. I know I can't write stuff like this after just reading an internet guide but does anyone know a good way to get started learning how?
@cardboarddalek Maybe you could learn songs like these from Andy Mckee, Don Ross or this guy. Get some influence from them and get a grasp of their techniques.
@cwhite037 they're called fanned frets...they're used to keep the guitar in tone and also that each note will stay in tune..kind of like a piano...what's also unique of his playing is that he's playing a 7-stringed guitar
@cwhite037 Helps intonation. Also some players find it easier to play music like this on. There are varying degrees of how much frets are like this. It also helps with drop tuning.
@Kryptonic678 I don't think so. First Andy has a 6 strings guitar and Craig has 7 strings. And Andy's guitar is a unique guitar crafted by Greenfield. But I thought the same the first time I saw this video :D
Great stuff ! love the style especially the slower segments :) are you coming to quebec city anytime ?you should there is a pretty decent acoustic guitar fanbase here always eager to find new artists.
@Herfer Actually, the real purpose of having fanned frets is to have the strings all at a different scale sort of like a piano, keeping it in tune as you go up the guitar neck.
@craigd19 ah, makes sense. Tab it if you have the time, otherwise, I still have every other tab of yours to learn. But would love to see a video of "Crazy is Catching" that's a great piece that I haven't seen anywhere else aside from the album (nothing on youtube!)
@ChasHolling All of the tunings are on my website. This one is: BEBDF#AD You can get most of it to sound alright on a standard guitar...just leave out the low 'B'
@Deusex63 Basically: Bass strings should have a longer scale length than treble strings, so as opposed to a standard fretted instruments, on a fanned-fret instrument, the nut and the saddle are set at an angle which satisfies the ideal scale length for the strings. Because of this, each string will have its own scale length, therefore the frets will be in different places. Obviously having seperate frets on each string is ridiculous, so the frets are slanted along the fretboard instead. :)
@HT3R21 Not that I know Craig well, but my impression of him from seeing him live is that many of his songs & titles are directed at friends or former friends - based on experiences or encounters that stood out to him during that relationship. This can make his song titles not as "obvious" as similar artists (i.e. Hedges' "Dirge" sounds like a dirge). Instead, his are much more personal.
I also tend to over-analyze things, so I could be way off base... but I don't think I am.
is the title of this song from a UCB sketch?
