OMG! Totally agree with you on this. My sister has Downs Sydrome too, and she is super strong also. I pissed her off one time, and she waited until I was sitting in the floor, got behind me put me in a headlock and drug me across the floor until I started turning blue. I guess thats what I get for breaking one of her Elvis mugs.
I almost started crying when I read some of these heartless comments. I have a little sister with down syndrome. People with down syndrome have a lot more potential than you'd expect. The only problem is that some of you idiots won't give them a chance. It's not their fault they have down syndrome. I'm very agitated by some of the things some of you are making up about people with DS. Perhaps you just looked in the mirror and thought it was someone with DS.
@DarkMoonLightMist ah, people who make assy comments are just trying to get a rise out of people. most of them probably don't mean it, and if they do, they're just morons. weak people have always looked for the physically weak to prey on them. but it's nice that we have so many good people in this world working to protect people with disabilities and to help them out. standing here amid the shrapnel of idiocy, i can still say the world is generally actually a decent place.
@AshillaBeige I believe the quotation is trying to say, your disability can make you stronger and more willful. Having a disability can be hard to fathom, but not dwelling on your disabilities, you focus on you abilites.
@08indigo08 Who the hell are you to judge whether or not someone deserves to live a happy life? People with DS didn't choose to have it THEY JUST DO. This doesn't change anything in the way that they should be treated as people. This goes the same for anyone with a mental disability. You have got a long way to go and you need to do some serious thinking. A person with your kind of attitude towards these kinds of things obviously has some deep problems that they need help with. SHAME ON YOU
@DrBrandiMD "...you succeed BECAUSE of your disability"
This doesn't sound like a good thing to be telling people with a disability. It's identifying them as chiefly disabled and that their accomplishments are an extension of their disability. I think "you succeed because of YOU" is a better way to put it. I don't succeed because I'm "able." I succeed because of my own efforts, and people with DS are exactly the same.
Agreed. There is a quite unrealistic stereotype attached to people with Downs Syndrome, that they are emotionally incapable. Of course this is ridiculous and my experience just contradicts this stereotype: virtually every person I have met with Downs Snydrome has been empathetic and very kind to others.
This video made me cry. I wish that everyone could see just how beautiful and special people with DS are. The other day a guy at McDonald's was calling a 12 year old boy with DS a retarded monkey. Let's just say I gave him a piece of my mind. The employees threw him out of the restaurant and another man told him that if he ever said anything like that again, by the time he got through with him, he'd be the one looking like a retarded monkey. I'm glad attitudes in society are changing.
@skittlebabegrl Good on you Jessica. I used to work in the disability sector. The Downs people who I worked with, were the highlight of my job... Always so loving, generous to a fault, hardly ever a frown, and never a cross word. :) Hats off to you for sticking by your best mate :D
my bro has downs and he is a very very lovable person he always smiles and hes very smart he knows all the presidents decimals and a ton of stuff i think thats awesome that i have a brother like that
I must say I love this message. I don't have DS but I can surely say we are all the same.....just people on a journey. Jerks will be jerks, Idiots will always be just idiots.
What would we do without people with down syndrome?! They always make me smile they under stand things that we wouldn't within an hour of thinking they are gifts from god!
i visited my brother's wife at her work, where she works with people with down syndrome, it was my first contact with them, and i must say, they are really precious and fun to work with.
This was very informative. I hadn't never noticed how much persons with DS look like their families, but in the pics in this video, they nearly looked identical to their siblings.
This should have eleven things because the number one thing that EVERY person w/a disability wants you to know is:
WE ARE PEOPLE TOO!!! There is no need to feel sorry for us or "fix" us because we can do things, just like "normal" people. We just might need a little extra time doing it or a little extra help (which is NOT an anagram for "do it for us") :-).
My 8 month old son has Down syndrome, and I'm always in need of supportive friends. "Eye on Isaac (Genetically Enhanced w/ Down Syndrome)" on Facebook
@skittlebabegrl - thats awesome Jessica, Your friend is lucky to have you, and you are lucky to know such a sweet guy. We should all be so lucky as to know someone with down's syndrome, they truely are God's gift to the world. They are the most sweetest and loving people, and their smile can brighten just about anyones day. God bless your friendship, I hope it lasts a lifetime :o)
