So, did you ever find employment? Added two years ago. I sure hope so... I was unemployed for several months last year. I just finished a book titled "Get A Great Job Fast" which I'm offering for free on my website (the site linked to my channel's page). We need to help each other and network. Hope the info helps. Believe it or not, I'm making more money and have a better job than I did when the economy was good. Bad times can also bring opportunity...
Unfortunately you've spent much time and effort pursuing studies which qualify you for a very limited range of employment. Many people today don't consider the end results when beginning and then when employment is hard to find bemoan the economy.
Hi, great idea on using all your resources! Just from an outsider's opinion, I would face the camera next time (not at an angle), which would also help with more eye contact & a more confident posture. & I would try to avoid saying as many "um"s as well. I'm the same way with those silent breaking 'um' words, but it will help polish your communication :)
top tips for getting a job. Get a haircut, put some nice make up on and wear a pretty dress. Right now, I wouldn't want to see your ugly frumpy mug around my office.
I wish I was an employer! If you don't mind traveling think about doing a CELTA course and teaching English, you can do it in a lot of south american countries without a visa (or you get an automatic working visa, something like that), in Korea you can make loads of money (major culture shock though) and in Europe you can work too, but they're bias against Americans because the paperwork is massive and the pay is crap except in Germany and France
1. if you don't hear back, change the angle of the camera so you facing it directly...would make you look more confident (right now your body is to the side, and I'm looking up your nose).
2. "um" too much. Overall, could sound more engaging when referencing your past experience (still be yourself).
employers like when you show special interest in their company rather than casting out a CV and asking them to choose you. Maybe apply for a non profit / social services??
Electronic resumes are the best way to get a job, and they are now becoming more creative, you can design your own website, use PowerPoint, it's all dandy (Portfolio Design, Debbie Rose Myers.) teaches you that.
Do you think the video resume works? Have you gotten any leads from this? I'd really like to know. I'm really struggling trying to get a job. Even low paying jobs are hard to get now. Please get back to with your views. Thanks. Sounds like you have a lot of good skills. Good luck to you.
It's interesting, a person can be given so much education but still lack good presentation skills. I guess you have to be born with it. You need to lay off the sound "Uhm". Your voice sounds uncertain and fearful as well. Just some feedback. So did you ever get a job offer from this video? Just curious.
Wait for the economy to gain strength. If you still cannot find a job afterwards, go back to college for a degree in accounting, engineering, or nursing. Be very careful not to drown yourself in debt in the process. Of course, to avoid this, you would first have to find a job. You're in a tough situation, but hopefully the US economy will be revived and you will find something. Until then, you may have to settle for less.
I hope you are able to find a job; anyone willing to work deserves one.
Just one piece of advice - employers might shy away from what they see as a potential lawsuit. You have embraced some highly controversial issues here - GLBT, healthcare is a right, etc... Civil rights are generally expanded through lawsuits, and it is very risky to keep an employee around who may stir up trouble at work. It may not be fair, but as my 4th grade math teacher said "life's not fair, and then you die."
With majors in philosophy..you should look for ateaching job, doesnt matter if you graduated with honors ot super honors, with majors like that..phhh ud never find a good job. 50.000$ tops.
What's up with your tags? Why does your sexual orientation have anything todo with a J.O.B. ? Plus, you totally ruined it for me, you had that sexually pent up libarian look about you. You have a penus?
Note your accomplishments and define your goal better, i.e., explain the type of position you desire and why you are highly qualified for it. Your presentation skills as shown in your video are very good, you appear direct and well spoken and obviously intelligent. Well done.
Everyone is going through tough times. Me, im giving away free coffee on the side of road to Kennedy Space Center CNN, Fox New, and Florida Today has dropped by.
Just creative ideas to get resumes out. Thinking out of the box, check it out.
I have seen some of your videos. I think you are a nice person who is well educated. But...
You suck at selling yourself. I mean this with the best possible intentions. I watched this video trying to imagine myself as a prospective employer. About half way through your video I forgot what you said your education was and honestly I have no idea what kind of position you are looking for. This is not good.
First the videography, bring the camera up to eye level, next you need a background that does not look like the corner of a bedroom. Do this in front of a book case full of books etc.
Next, always taylor your video resume to the specific employer you are seeking to work for. This looks like a generic resume that you are planning to distribute to many employers. In fact you mention that you want this passed along. That is a no no.
look the prospective employer in the eye and say "I want to work for you!" meaning only that employer. In this video you seem desperate and willing to work for anyone. That is not what you want to project.
Only include education and experience related to the specific job you are applying for. Your entire education should be in a 3 sentence nutshell. Your experience not much bigger. You can put more details into a printed one page resume.
unless you are specifically applying for a job with an activist organization, never ever mention politics or any activism you are involved with. Keep in mind, the vast majority of employers are going to be very conservative (translation, they will view any mention of activism as evidence that you are a trouble maker).
so to review, camera at eye level, book case in the background then:
Hi my name is xxx.
I am applying for the xxx position with your firm.
I received my master's degree in xxx from xxx University in 20xx. I also have degrees in xxx and xxx.
My most recent position was as xxx at xxx company where I worked for xx years. Prior to that I was a xxx for xxx company and as an xxx for xxx company. I have a total of xxx years experience as an xxx.
I consider xxx xxx xxx and xxx xxx xxx as my biggest accomplishments (keep it to under 50 words)
Thank you for considering me for your opening for xxx.
That's it. If your video takes more than 60 seconds you've already lost the job. You may have numerous accomplishments and experiences that you are proud of but all of that should be written down succinctly on a one page resume. Only include things related to the job you are seeking.
If you're going to post a resume video, you should create a separate profile to do so. You should also disable comments for the video, so prospective employers aren't subjected to DontCryPvP's wanting to "tear dat honky ass up."
Leave the GLBT part OUT OF YOUR VIDEO. Nobody wants the liability of some nutjob who brings their politics to work with them.
Don't look down into the camera - the camera should be level with you. A good idea executed poorly. Good luck.
A good video resume would help a lot of people. A bad video will hurt you. Your video is not good. It needs a lot of work. Please re-do it and get some help.
Hi, Ashley. From what you have described and your experience I feel 'Event Management' would be ideal. You seem to have excellent organisational skills and would be ideal for managing conferences, training centres, and delegate bookings. Have you ever considered heading in that direction?
I am not very certain this will land you a job. If it did, then more power to you... But with the amount of resumes that companies have to file through due to the economy these days... Chances are they aren't going to go out looking for someone on youtube.
You seem like a nice person and are obviously smart...but, at 2 minutes into the video you had said "um" 22 times. Just an FYI
You should play a game with your friends called "don't say um." They do it on the radio here and it is funny. They give a caller a subject to talk about and they can't say "um" or they get the boot. If you say "um" in your video, you are likely to do it in your interview and it just doesn't sound....um, good!
You've done alot of really good things. I'm sure you'll find a job you'll like. Would you mind if I, um, borrow your idea of using YouTube as a resource? I've been thinking of doing a video where I let potential employers know what my job/volunteer experiences have been. But, I don't want you to think I'm copying your video idea, LOL.
I have owned successful businesses, restaurant, electronics manufacturing and consulting. I also have been in management, most recently for NYC with 388 employees directly under me. I have dealt with being transsexual all my life and have had enough experience to know what reality is. Of course I don't disclose I am TS. Many new to transition don't pass too well and it is pretty obvious & background checks nowadays, look into every aspect, hard to hide the little details either way. Kisses, Bye
Ashleys capable & can get jobs anywhere she wants. In order to do that she has to do one thing: pass completely. Because if she gets clocked she will be subject to the individual prejudices of the interviewer. Some people won't have issue but reality is that many people are not familiar with TS and do have issue based on stereotypes. True, she will have better luck in metro areas like Dallas, but after employed will be better protected in states/municipalities w TS anti discrimination laws.
This is becoming a lengthy answer, he he. Just one more thing: Try to make your presentation, your job wishes and your qualifications fit nicely together. One way to do that is to use a little time thinking about each of your previous experiences and try to specify three to five keywords for each of them - which quality did you evolve in this job i.e. management, communication, IT etc. Then try to use those words in your presentation. That's a great tip for cover letters as well.
I guess it was very unclear that this was supposed to be a very informal presentation by nature - A long shot at the very best. It is not at all what my formal resume and cover letter look like. I don't even use the time line style resume, I dislike it.
Dear Ashley, please don't take this up wrong. I spent a lot of time on putting this together, because I care about you and want to help you find the right job. How you approach it is of course up to you, but you might find that even a long shot has a better chance of being a hit if you put some effort into aiming at the target.
I'm sure it would improve the likelihood of the video being passed on to an employer as well. Which state do you want to work in for instance? I still don't know.
Few great qualifications are much better than a blur of everything if the employer don't remember it.
Two people already asked which job you want - you do tell it in the video, yes, but if your audience ask about it it means your communication was not optimal. That's why it's so important to be direct.
One last very important thing: Never ever tell in a video like this that you have trouble finding a job - desperation scares the hell out of an employer and hurts your position in wages ngt.
Ashley: Best of luck in your job search. Anyone who hires you will be damned lucky to have you. No doubt, this is a real rough time to be job searching, but you've got a lot going for you...so again, good luck!
You may want to look at moving to Texas which has the best economy in the country due to no state income taxes and its a right to work state so businesses are locating here from all over the USA. Over 1100 people per day are moving into TX due to the number of jobs available here. Help Wanted signs everywhere in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin and other cities. again good luck
LOL It never ceases to amaze me. She's a Transsexual, in Texas it is flat out legal to fire her or not hire her in the first place because of that. Because Texas is still a bible belt republican state adversarial towards GLBT. Obama is pro GLBT. Had Palin/McCain won not only would they severely curtailed human rights for Ashley and those like her, (outlawing SRS and other medical procedures, federal ban on same sex marriage) There would have been four more years of republican economic wizardry.
There is no such Texas law you stated. The federal laws apply to all 50 states. There are many TSs employed here in Texas. Also Obama stated many times he opposed gay marriage. If someone doesnt want to go where the jobs are then be unemployed. Texas needs workers all over the place and its a nice state to live in. Good Luck anyways...
I don't see anyone 'stating' that there is a 'law'. The point is that it is not illegal in Texas to discriminate based on gender identity and federal law does NOT currently protect Transsexuals either. Many of the more progressive states and municipalities do have laws against discrimination based on gender identity. The legal climate in Texas is not favorable, see the Christie Lee Littleton case. That one set back transsexual rights for years. By the way Obama stated he is for civil unions.
Federal law prohibits discrimination against sexual orientation. if that doesnt voer TG/TSs i dont know what else does. Again there are many TG/TS working in Texas and they dont seem to be having any problem. A single case which is years old is hardly justification to say an entire state discriminates. Again if you dont want to move to where jobs are thats your right but with Texas economy booming there are plenty of jobs. Again good luck either way.
Federal law doesnt protect TG/TS. Federal anti discrimination law protects based on sex and specifically excludes TG/TS. A major lobby has been underway for years to get this changed & is one of, if not the highest priority effort with regard to transgender rights in this country. LAMBDA, ACLU, Human Rights groups of which I am a part are involved with this. Texas is not unique in discrimination against TG/TS, the cases are numerous, sadly many people not transsexual do not see a problem.
We do not need more anti-discrimination laws which only make it harder for many people to get jobs because employers are worried about potential future lawsuits. Most employers will hire base on who is best for the job based on qualifications, experience, skills, attitude, etc. If you meet this criteria you have no reason to be worried about getting a job. Dont make excuses about why you cant get a job. Have a good attitude and you will get a job. Good Luck.
Before anti discrimination law there were blacks, women, jews, hadnicapped, old people, etc who would not get hired, be fired or not promoted. It was a huge problem in this country. Bias plays a big role in employment. Now with law in place it really isn't. So if someone is worried about a lawsuit because they are biased they wouldn't hire. News Flash: They won't hire anyway. Funny how NYC has the most progressive GLBT laws and also has per capita one of the highest GLBT employment rates.
I take it that you have never owned a business or been in management. All I can say is you can believe what you want rather than accept constructive criticism. I am not the one living in lala land. If you dont want to know how the real world works then thats up to you. Question: Why do you even have to tell an employer you are TG/TS? I have never heard of any employer inspecting genitalia in an interview. Again Good Luck,
I live in a northern liberal blue state. I can tell you for a fact that even here, transgendered people are highly discriminated against in the work place. I personally know of at least two who recieved undeserved poor treatment condoned by the employer. One was fired and the other was forced to quit. Technicaly harrassment of any kind is a crime, but even here, the police and the attorney general will refuse to prosecute for harassment of transgendered people.
Federal *policy* (not law) recommends not prohibiting for gay/lesbian contractors ONLY. I was removed from a federal program, and the distinction between "gay" and "trans" was made then and in fact stated as the REASON.
Good Luck on your job search. With the election of Obama the economy is going to get worse before it gets better due to his tax increases, profit taking, employee mandates and threats to bankrupt industries. Reading the business journals all I see is advise to businesses to cut jobs now while they can to be as lean as possible before Obama and the dems impose their proposals. I know my employer is cutting jobs before Jan 20 because they want to reduce headcount before Obama takes office.
For some one who's young, just got out of school and did a lot while she was in school besides going to class. That's important to emphasize which is what she's done.
But what is it that you want to do? It is important that you get into a job you enjoy. You are NOT limited because you are a tranny, that is incorrect for you because you aren't offensive. Do not make your T an issue. If you are in CA or NY that is good. Look for jobs with municipalities because they have EEO standards and are more informed. Anthropology, cultural resources with their construction projects, etc. Just a few Ideas. Good Luck!
I'm pretty sure I say what I want to do at the end of the video. I'm going to respond to your long letter a bit later. The CRM advice was excellent, I forgot that I was qualified to do that kind of job.
I don't know if this works for philosophy masters but creative writing english masters can teach college without a PhD and you sound like you'd be a great teacher. I also know a couple of people in your boat who are considering getting their PhD. Despite the economy there is always room for a teacher. Just a thought.
No, unfortunately a MA in Philosophy is not the terminal degree so I can't teach at the college level. I just left a PhD program because I was extremely unhappy there.
Damn, I'm sorry to hear that. I wish you well on the hunt and hope you get on a campus so you can help students. I certainly know some need it (like I did).
Ashley, you may want to see what opportunities there are in HR (human resources) in many companies. Also, large companies (i.e. IBM and others) have excellent resources for transgender employees.
i also have a degree in philosophy...don't let anyone tell you that doesn't qualify you for anything. It in fact qualifies you for more things than the average degree. Masters too huh? Nice. You don't mention what you would prefer doing. What do you want to do?
the first thought that I had when I read the line "If you have a position you think I might be a match for..." after the content your last video...was...well... giggidy giggidy, giggidy goo
p.s. sorry if that was offensive I just watch alot of Family guy and i just felt that it was something that needed to be said.
faculty and staff positions. Some comments: You might want to rerecord your video and see if you can get rid of most of the "ums". You might want to focus a bit more on your passions - this will put you ahead of 80% of applicants that don't seem to have any (lack
of passion is prime reject point for me). That sweater is a good choice for interviews - red is a power color for women a presents
I agree, less dry and more dynamic, also your resume should be in reverse chronological order. Also the camera is looking up at you and it would be far better if it was level with you. But yeah LOVE the top! Best of luck, I'm looking for work as well at the moment. Being unemployed sucks ass :-(

I think with those references and Qualifications, you're not going to remain unemployed for long. Even in a Economy that's in recession.
ellyunfortunetly 3 years ago
Damn, girl, you've been busy O.o And still straight A's. I draw my hat.
janeyanna 3 years ago
This is becoming a lengthy answer, he he. Just one more thing: Try to make your presentation, your job wishes and your qualifications fit nicely together. One way to do that is to use a little time thinking about each of your previous experiences and try to specify three to five keywords for each of them - which quality did you evolve in this job i.e. management, communication, IT etc. Then try to use those words in your presentation. That's a great tip for cover letters as well.
Best of luck
TenderGenderBender 3 years ago
I guess it was very unclear that this was supposed to be a very informal presentation by nature - A long shot at the very best. It is not at all what my formal resume and cover letter look like. I don't even use the time line style resume, I dislike it.
icecoldbath 3 years ago
Dear Ashley, please don't take this up wrong. I spent a lot of time on putting this together, because I care about you and want to help you find the right job. How you approach it is of course up to you, but you might find that even a long shot has a better chance of being a hit if you put some effort into aiming at the target.
I'm sure it would improve the likelihood of the video being passed on to an employer as well. Which state do you want to work in for instance? I still don't know.
TenderGenderBender 3 years ago
Few great qualifications are much better than a blur of everything if the employer don't remember it.
Two people already asked which job you want - you do tell it in the video, yes, but if your audience ask about it it means your communication was not optimal. That's why it's so important to be direct.
One last very important thing: Never ever tell in a video like this that you have trouble finding a job - desperation scares the hell out of an employer and hurts your position in wages ngt.
TenderGenderBender 3 years ago
Hi Ashley, that's an impressive resume. You could work on the structure and directness.
- Describe yourself as a person first.
- Which job do you want? HR, management, social analytics?
- What can you offer a company? Think about your strong points? Leadership, empathy, loyalty.. you know.
-Then use a few of your work experiences as examples: "I managed 40 student staffs"..
-Finally wrap it up, tell the employer you look forward to get in touch.
-And only mention the MA (BA is implied).

Help Wanted signs everywhere in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin and other cities. again good luck
mergatroid79 3 years ago
LOL It never ceases to amaze me. She's a Transsexual, in Texas it is flat out legal to fire her or not hire her in the first place because of that. Because Texas is still a bible belt republican state adversarial towards GLBT. Obama is pro GLBT. Had Palin/McCain won not only would they severely curtailed human rights for Ashley and those like her, (outlawing SRS and other medical procedures, federal ban on same sex marriage) There would have been four more years of republican economic wizardry.
startha7 3 years ago
There is no such Texas law you stated. The federal laws apply to all 50 states. There are many TSs employed here in Texas. Also Obama stated many times he opposed gay marriage. If someone doesnt want to go where the jobs are then be unemployed. Texas needs workers all over the place and its a nice state to live in. Good Luck anyways...
mergatroid79 3 years ago
I don't see anyone 'stating' that there is a 'law'. The point is that it is not illegal in Texas to discriminate based on gender identity and federal law does NOT currently protect Transsexuals either. Many of the more progressive states and municipalities do have laws against discrimination based on gender identity. The legal climate in Texas is not favorable, see the Christie Lee Littleton case. That one set back transsexual rights for years. By the way Obama stated he is for civil unions.
startha7 3 years ago
Federal law prohibits discrimination against sexual orientation. if that doesnt voer TG/TSs i dont know what else does. Again there are many TG/TS working in Texas and they dont seem to be having any problem. A single case which is years old is hardly justification to say an entire state discriminates. Again if you dont want to move to where jobs are thats your right but with Texas economy booming there are plenty of jobs. Again good luck either way.
mergatroid79 3 years ago
Federal law doesnt protect TG/TS. Federal anti discrimination law protects based on sex and specifically excludes TG/TS. A major lobby has been underway for years to get this changed & is one of, if not the highest priority effort with regard to transgender rights in this country. LAMBDA, ACLU, Human Rights groups of which I am a part are involved with this. Texas is not unique in discrimination against TG/TS, the cases are numerous, sadly many people not transsexual do not see a problem.
startha7 3 years ago
We do not need more anti-discrimination laws which only make it harder for many people to get jobs because employers are worried about potential future lawsuits. Most employers will hire base on who is best for the job based on qualifications, experience, skills, attitude, etc. If you meet this criteria you have no reason to be worried about getting a job. Dont make excuses about why you cant get a job. Have a good attitude and you will get a job. Good Luck.
mergatroid79 3 years ago

Again Good Luck,
mergatroid79 3 years ago 2
I live in a northern liberal blue state. I can tell you for a fact that even here, transgendered people are highly discriminated against in the work place. I personally know of at least two who recieved undeserved poor treatment condoned by the employer. One was fired and the other was forced to quit. Technicaly harrassment of any kind is a crime, but even here, the police and the attorney general will refuse to prosecute for harassment of transgendered people.
shatros 2 years ago
Merg: Actually that's not true.

I know my employer is cutting jobs before Jan 20 because they want to reduce headcount before Obama takes office.
mergatroid79 3 years ago
If it wasn't obvious from my videos, i'm more liberal then Obama. I welcome all his proposals, wish we had them 8 years ago.

So, to summarise:- you're clever, but you've never done any real work.

For some one who's young, just got out of school and did a lot while she was in school besides going to class. That's important to emphasize which is what she's done.

My two full time jobs that I mentioned weren't real work?
icecoldbath 3 years ago
some people do not consider work as real unless it involves back pain and getting dirt under the nails.
shatros 2 years ago
But what is it that you want to do? It is important that you get into a job you enjoy. You are NOT limited because you are a tranny, that is incorrect for you because you aren't offensive. Do not make your T an issue. If you are in CA or NY that is good. Look for jobs with municipalities because they have EEO standards and are more informed. Anthropology, cultural resources with their construction projects, etc. Just a few Ideas. Good Luck!
startha7 3 years ago
I'm pretty sure I say what I want to do at the end of the video. I'm going to respond to your long letter a bit later. The CRM advice was excellent, I forgot that I was qualified to do that kind of job.

I don't know if this works for philosophy masters but creative writing english masters can teach college without a PhD and you sound like you'd be a great teacher. I also know a couple of people in your boat who are considering getting their PhD. Despite the economy there is always room for a teacher. Just a thought.
dreamingofwings 3 years ago
No, unfortunately a MA in Philosophy is not the terminal degree so I can't teach at the college level. I just left a PhD program because I was extremely unhappy there.
icecoldbath 3 years ago
Damn, I'm sorry to hear that. I wish you well on the hunt and hope you get on a campus so you can help students. I certainly know some need it (like I did).
dreamingofwings 3 years ago
Ashley, you may want to see what opportunities there are in HR (human resources) in many companies. Also, large companies (i.e. IBM and others) have excellent resources for transgender employees.
robinsweet 3 years ago
Yes I've looked into Human Resources jobs. Thank you for the advice.

That would be the same IBM that fired Lynn Conway for
transitioning on the job. Subsequently, others have gotten
credit for some fundamental computer architecture
innovations that were in fact Lynn's work because she
did not claim them until 25+ years later when she stopped
being stealth (her birth name was on the papers). Apple
Computer would be a much better choice.

I have interviewed many people for university
faculty and staff positions. Some comments: You might want to rerecord your video and see if you can get rid of most of the "ums". You might want to focus a bit more on your passions - this will put you ahead of 80% of applicants that don't seem to have any (lack
of passion is prime reject point for me). That sweater is a good choice for interviews - red is a power color for women a presents
confidence. Good luck!

I agree, less dry and more dynamic, also your resume should be in reverse chronological order. Also the camera is looking up at you and it would be far better if it was level with you. But yeah LOVE the top! Best of luck, I'm looking for work as well at the moment. Being unemployed sucks ass :-(
