There are many wonderful guitarists who can't play blues -- Brain May, comes to mind -- not everybody has that skill. Certainly, she has tremendous talent -- once you scrape past the hype, hair and high heels. Female guitarist are not a novelty anymore, so WHO CARES about her plumbing.

Not to take anything away from her, because she's very talented, but there are hundreds of other players equally talented who don't get her level of recognition, because they're male and they don't particularly stand out.
It's great that there's a female guitar player getting this level of exposure, but I don't hear anything remarkable, nothing that really stands out to me as a unique talent. It's very well executed, but generic. That's where the criticism comes from, in part.
@bnburns2000 the reason others don't get her level of recognition has nothing to do with gender. There are many reasons for it and people frequently make an assumption that it's based solely on being a guitar player which is pretty subjective anyway. She's a complete package releasing accessible material. See John Mayer for an equivelant male version. Just because you many not like her playing or she's not a guitar master is irrelevant. Most other players on her level are one dimensional.

There's lots of one-trick male guitar players I could rattle off for days, and I'm not much interested in them either.
I think the Mayer comparison is somewhat on point. I get what you're going for with that, but I do think he has moments of brilliance w/ melody, although he's got plenty of duds too.
Accessibility may have a lot to do with her recognition, but strip away the out-of-place riffage and you're left w/ weak pop songs, which is pretty much what happens when you take away Mayer's guitar as well. At the end of the day, I'm willing to bet there are far more creative female players out there not getting this kind of attention, who may just hapen to not be as easy on the eyes. Musically, there's not much going on here.
@bnburns2000 there are no handouts, you need to want it. Orianthi didn't get red carpet treatment, she worked for it and created opportunities for herself and nailed them. Of course some luck was involved too. Who cares if someone male or female may technically be a little better or more creative if they can't do anything with it or inspire people to pick up an instrument. Orianthi and John's music are subjective. Doesn't matter if you think they are weak, many feel that they are very good.
It's cool to see a girl play the guitar, and play it well, but unless she takes it to the next level her career will be short. She may have the notes for the "Beat It" solo but the timing and phrasing are off, way off. It lacks feel. Having said that I honestly hope she can dig deep and find something more. Rock and Roll is dead music lovers!

With the exception of Kiss and Slash all the bands you mentioned are not making new music. Only Paul Stanley has written any good music in the past 5 years and Slash rocks I'll give you that. Rush is a great touring band but Geddy and Alex are not dedicated musicians at all anymore. Neil Peart is the greatest! Sticks and stones...
Yeaaaahhhh...I was kind of irritated when I clicked on this because I saw her name when watching a Jeff Beck vid. HOWEVER...the only stuff I saw from her was "According to you" and "Highly Strung". Both pointed to another no feeling musician born in this generation. But this single vid made me change my perception on her. I REALLY wish she would not play that pop sounding rock. 10 seconds into this I felt more then the other two things I heard.
Anthony, it's easy. She ain't 'all that'. She has some talent and can play blues-style, so as far as that goes, yeah, she's OK. But the forced-sexy vocal gymnastics say "American Idol" more than anything else. Give her another ten years of living, and maybe she'll move from sounding like a GIT blues-licks compendium and start playing some music. (If it were about talent, Del Rey would be a super star. SHE plays, but is older and doesn't have Orianthi's outstanding double humbuckers.)
She needs to play the blues and not the mainstream pop stuff she's doing. This video pretty much is the evidence that she needs to showcase her talent more like this rather stuff like 'according to you'
Technically very proficient, but... I don't know, but it is a feeling that she uses the song or tune to showcase the guitar rather than using the guitar to project the song - and I think the same is true of most modern lead guitarists.

Not to take anything away from her, because she's very talented, but there are hundreds of other players equally talented who don't get her level of recognition, because they're male and they don't particularly stand out.
It's great that there's a female guitar player getting this level of exposure, but I don't hear anything remarkable, nothing that really stands out to me as a unique talent. It's very well executed, but generic. That's where the criticism comes from, in part.

@bnburns2000 the reason others don't get her level of recognition has nothing to do with gender. There are many reasons for it and people frequently make an assumption that it's based solely on being a guitar player which is pretty subjective anyway. She's a complete package releasing accessible material. See John Mayer for an equivelant male version. Just because you many not like her playing or she's not a guitar master is irrelevant. Most other players on her level are one dimensional.

There's lots of one-trick male guitar players I could rattle off for days, and I'm not much interested in them either.
I think the Mayer comparison is somewhat on point. I get what you're going for with that, but I do think he has moments of brilliance w/ melody, although he's got plenty of duds too.

Accessibility may have a lot to do with her recognition, but strip away the out-of-place riffage and you're left w/ weak pop songs, which is pretty much what happens when you take away Mayer's guitar as well. At the end of the day, I'm willing to bet there are far more creative female players out there not getting this kind of attention, who may just hapen to not be as easy on the eyes. Musically, there's not much going on here.

@bnburns2000 there are no handouts, you need to want it. Orianthi didn't get red carpet treatment, she worked for it and created opportunities for herself and nailed them. Of course some luck was involved too. Who cares if someone male or female may technically be a little better or more creative if they can't do anything with it or inspire people to pick up an instrument. Orianthi and John's music are subjective. Doesn't matter if you think they are weak, many feel that they are very good.

It's cool to see a girl play the guitar, and play it well, but unless she takes it to the next level her career will be short. She may have the notes for the "Beat It" solo but the timing and phrasing are off, way off. It lacks feel. Having said that I honestly hope she can dig deep and find something more. Rock and Roll is dead music lovers!

@damageplan67 All the bands you mentioned are old bands! They belong to a time in the past. A wonderful time to be sure but a time that will never come again. With the exception of Kiss and Slash all the bands you mentioned are not making new music. Only Paul Stanley has written any good music in the past 5 years and Slash rocks I'll give you that. Rush is a great touring band but Geddy and Alex are not dedicated musicians at all anymore. Neil Peart is the greatest! Sticks and stones...

Yeaaaahhhh...I was kind of irritated when I clicked on this because I saw her name when watching a Jeff Beck vid. HOWEVER...the only stuff I saw from her was "According to you" and "Highly Strung". Both pointed to another no feeling musician born in this generation. But this single vid made me change my perception on her. I REALLY wish she would not play that pop sounding rock. 10 seconds into this I felt more then the other two things I heard.

Anthony, it's easy. She ain't 'all that'. She has some talent and can play blues-style, so as far as that goes, yeah, she's OK. But the forced-sexy vocal gymnastics say "American Idol" more than anything else. Give her another ten years of living, and maybe she'll move from sounding like a GIT blues-licks compendium and start playing some music. (If it were about talent, Del Rey would be a super star. SHE plays, but is older and doesn't have Orianthi's outstanding double humbuckers.)

Technically very proficient, but... I don't know, but it is a feeling that she uses the song or tune to showcase the guitar rather than using the guitar to project the song - and I think the same is true of most modern lead guitarists.
