  • Needs more mandolin.

  • The song is about a family tradition of bootlegging shine, he only mentions weed at the end

  • @fountainhudson8

The main character of the song is the man returning from Vietnam to grow weed. That is at least as important as the moonshine. Steve Earle, who wrote the song, says it is about coming to terms with the war and the way the US failed it's soldiers. He says it is a political song. You are entitled to your opinion, but it is only an opinion.

  • Travis does the best version of this song... ever....

  • WRONG, Copperhead Road is about the boot-legging of whiskey.

  • @Amhermanii

It's both. Listen to the last verse. It is about a guy from a bootlegging family who comes back from Vietnam and plants weed. "I came home with a brand new plan... I take seeds from Columbia and Mexico, plant 'em up a 'holler down Copperhead Road... now the DEA's got a chopper in the air" (not ATF or revenuers, so it is drugs.) I know the first part is about bootlegging, I was responding to someone who said the last verse was about cocaine.

  • I have to say, Travis is pretty good at this.

  • You know you're a rock star when all you have to do is raise your fist to make people scream.

  • I love the original and it's cool that Travis covered it but it does not compare at all....A for effort I guess.

  • is there a "i kinda liked it, but its never going to be as good as Steve Earle" button

  • Knoxville Tn .. best place to live

  • waylon said this guy is the real deal and that is good enough for me.period

  • I for one am a fan of travis tritt....I think its an awesome cover of this song....he has the voice that fits this song....

  • Real nice. I am a new Travis fan love it and love most but not all of Travis songs.

  • 32 people never came back from copperhead road.

  • @budboy1988 Of-course! The catfish need somethin' to eat!

  • THIS IS ONE OF THE BADDEST SONGS!!!!

  • Thanks for posting this video. I've been a fan of both Steve and Travis since their 1st albums came out. I've never heard Travis Tritt sing this. It's nice to see.

  • Hey, he is one of my favorite singers.Believe me when i say no one does copperhead road as good as he does. this is my brain saying what it thinks. he is one of the best singers around.

his is real country music. all that stuff now days aint squat

  • What is the name of guitar Travis is playing? Sounds like a mandolin, Dobro,Unukalhai all together.

  • @jrodtidefan it's a Vox Mando-Guitar...very cool instrument.

  • @jrodtidefan it is a vox mando-guitar...very cool instrument.

  • I live about 45 minutes from Mountain City. I still need to visit Copperhead Road one day

  • @beastofburden90 It has since been renamed as Copperhead Hollow Rd. due to theft of road signs bearing the song's name.

  • @bmartyVIX Haha I see someone has been on Wikipedia

  • @bmartyVIX lol yes, I didn't want you to get lost.

  • 32 people must work for the government.

  • Damn good song

  • Dad and Mom got married on shine money. Dad ran a load to Jellico Tn and they were married there, June 7 1954. 40 years later Dec.16 1994, thats where I was married.

  • Travis rocks!!

  • Travis really rocks this guy is awesome….

  • this is freakin awesome!!!!!!! Dont care what no one says.....

  • My daddy drove shine out of Corbin Kentucky back into South Carolina back in the late 50s...Im sure he would have loved this song, especially after coming home from Korea

  • Travis lives about 15 miles from me...over in Paulding Co. Even though I love Steve Earls version...Travis gives it a true down home feel to this song. I love them both...but Travis playin the guitar on this one truly rocks!!!!

  • this is my favorite song my 2nd great granddaddy, great grandaddy, and my grandaddy all made mooshine LONG LIVE THE MOONSHINERS!!!!

  • Not loud enough..blare this hoarse whisper up!

  • this is my all time favorite live song besides whiskey on ice

  • travis tritt is a singin son of bitch i just wanna dance

  • Travis Tritt makes anything sound good! One of the all time best in my opinion.

  • I've seen Steve Earle and Travis Tritt do this song live. They both kick ass. I actually prefer Travis Tritts live version. And steeleydan65 is right... there is no bagpipe...

  • i think travis does a hell of a job with it!

  • I think I`m related to Travis but he`s ok, anyhow...

  • MR Tritt does a fine job, But Steve still out "rednecks" Travis. BTW There aint no pipes in Steve's version either. That's a synthesizer sonny.

& the seeds from Columbia are marijuana & not coca!

  • MR Tritt does a fine job, But Steve still out "rednecks" Travis. BTW There aint no pipes in Steve's version either. That's a synthesizer sonny.

  • it aint as good as steve earle but its still a bad ass song and sounds pretty damn good with tritt

  • man... ive never heard Tritt do this... I'm diggin it! pretty good!

  • Great voice, I prefer it when the vocal melody line is followed a bit more - it's a part of the composition after all, but it's a good version!

  • I love it when he does this song at concerts. It's a shame that people don't realize it's even better to experience it live. Thanks for posting it!

  • my name john lee pettimore, same as his daddy and his daddy before, not bad still lovin steve's ORIGINAL better fucking right cocaine truckin biatch

  • @scottspook he was never talking about cocaine, he was talking about marijuana

  • @tcjb666 oh ya u mean steve earle or travis tritt? u know the original song? i dont think marijuana keeps you up at night idiot when was the last time u did 7 grams in 6 hours? ya thought so...shut up while you think you are ahead

  • @tcjb666 u think this is the original eh....dumbass

  • u heard any other steve earle songs? little white pills? guess not fucking bitch ill slap you silly you fucking dumb cunt

  • @tcjb666 ya cuz steve earle didn't do coke...and neither did i? go fuck yourself you incorrect sonofabitch

  • @scottspook

The song is about marijuana (I don't think coca plants would even grow in Appalachia)... but Steve Earle did plenty of coke, by his own admission, including crack cocaine and various forms of dope. Bottomed out in the early 90s and dropped out of music, got clean in late 94 and has been clean since,

  • Wow, I love this Travis Tritt version, sounds great..thanks for posting

  • This man gives 100 % in everything he does. Most underrated musician of our time. He is a dying breed and that is a crying shame. Keep rocking TT - Some of us get you.

  • I do like Steve Earls version just fine but personally I like Travis' voice better and I think his personality is every bit as suited to singing about moonshine, marijuana and cocaine. I see him as more of southern rock than traditional country, which is kinda like rockabilly. I like Travis' version just a little bit better. Actually any song that he's covered I liked better than the original - for example, Take it Easy - originally done by the Eagles.

  • @badasschucknorris

I like Travis's voice for the song, but the arrangement is too slick for my tastes. Needs the mandolin. Though it is better than the arrangement of his cover of Steve's "Sometimes She Forgets." I would love to hear Travis with a more stripped acoustic sound on both songs.

  • You are right keyboards don't replace bagpipes, but at mandolin does.... duh! Here's your Sign!!!

  • He sings"I get seeds from Columbia and Mexico...and I plant them in the hollow up on copperhead road..." I don't believe he's referencing cocaine.

  • i love both versions of this song and was wonderin if this is available on disc..anyone have info on that??

  • I believe this is the way they sing it in Georgia and Alabama, the Travis tritt way.

  • I got to say love Travis's Version , he makes it his own and that is what a entertainer does , takes ownership , and brings it to life in his own way , Steve's version is the best well cause he invented the damn song ,

  • I love me some weed, man

  • Steve Earle sounds better!!!!!!!!

  • dam great song both travis and steve kick ass singing it and thank you for letting us comment on this cause iam sorry to say there is no music as good as this anymore i treid to watch the acm last nite and couldnt do it it is a shame twhat people consider good music any more

  • TT can serve up a great cover of any southern rock or country song.

  • @ChipNSC77 That is the truth!

  • no a guy who can play this song on a guitar and he sounds just like steve earle

  • no bagpipes on either. Earle even used "keyboard" for the intro....just better quality motif...haha

  • Good cover - Travis has the right voice for this one. GRIMGLEN I agree - you can't fake bagpipes and get the sound right - just doesn't work but its close.

  • definatly never can be better than the original but tritts got the voice steve earl didnt

  • GREAT JOB BY TRAVIS TRITT

  • Ha iv been in Knoxville in Johnson Co Arkansas

  • 28 people are related to the revenue man

  • I've re-enabled comments. If you don't have anything positive to say, regardless of whether or not you appreciate Travis' rendition of this Steve Earl song, don't bother posting or else I'm just going to delete your post and block you permanently. No first amendment speech rights here. Put up or shut up.

  • @bigdmck01 TT is nobody's cute little puppy and singing is a business to him as to any professional artist but that boy can DELIVER a song like no-one else does. I am a grown man of nearly 70 but his 'loving and losing' ballads still almost move me to tears. As to 'cocaine' my feeling is that what is ' planted in the holler' is more likely to be pot. The Steve Earle version is great and so is this. Best wishes from the UK where TT has lots of fans.

  • @bigdmck01 I dont think anyone who knows Travis could cay a bad thing about anything he sings....Hes the greatest voice ever since hank williams. Hell he might be better...amen

  • @bigdmck01 PERSONALLY i LOVE TRAVIS' VERSION IVE SEEN HIM MULTIPLE TIMES

  • @bigdmck01

Sometimes us humans get carried away by what we hear first and just won't listen to anything else! I do love Steve Earle's 'Copperhead Road' but will not deny myself the pleasure of hearing a rendition of that song by another all time favourite singer of mine; Travis Tritt.

    Glad you've re-enabled comments!

  • fear 2 !$#?

  • ironic the old coked up drunk tritt was better

  • Is this on an album? got to have it!

  • @bigdmck01 yes but during the days when this song first came out there was Colunbian Gold and Mexican green both pot. and because this song was written in the 70's that is what they are refering to

  • Copperhead Road was written in the 80s, released in 1988, not in the 70's. But yes, it is about growing pot.

  • @bigdmck01

    Right ON!!

  • My Grandma's family on my Mom's side were moonshiners during the Great Depression... that's how they survived!!!! &^%$ Yeah!!!!

  • Steve never does the electric version anymore. That's why Travis's version rocks.

  • yea earle is still the boss but this is a good cover none the less

  • Great version - and I'm a Steve Earle fan! Does anybody know if the drummer on this cut is Steve Turner?

  • I saw him live in 02 he kicked ass and also played this song

  • get em travis

  • I remember sitting in a bar on the north carolina coast near wilmington and the bar was jumping to this song

  • hell yea, i live in wilmington this song gets played just about every night i go out...check out my song "Tennessee Borderline" on my page, it's inspired by steve earle

  • @buckhunter2191 Even these days, there's a LOT of moonshine still being drove out of NC. The commissioners of an entire down a few towns over from where I live were all brought up on charges after they were caught by the Feds for making & selling moonshine. It was so bad it made national news. Then another high-profile group were caught not long after. It was so bad I figured people thought that's all we do here is make, drink, & run shine. There's plenty of it but it's not ALL we do. LOL!

  • Either way cant beat that song ,tho they both have their own way of doing a very great job ! Its still DIXIE ALL THE WAY !!!!!!!!!

  • even though the mandolin is just a little off he still plays it very well. i think it sounds better this way, his voice does this song justice

  • good job

  • Rock on Travis! He did Steve an honor with this version. No one is Steve Earle. Rock on Travis!

  • Steve Earle is Steve Earle man but yeah I hear ya :) LOL j/k

  • @greenwooby I agree, he is not Steve Earle, but it is an awesome tribute

  • Keyboards sounds like my sons casio !!! lololol

  • could that be cuz hes a country singer dumbass

  • didn't think it'd be better than steve earle... but i think it is

  • Your kidding right? You do realize that Travis is a PROFESSIONAL musician? I'm sure that he can "figure" it out...

  • @MattimusSixStrings doesn't mean he was always a musician or in the music business. Not all of us started out where we ended up & many of us ever claimed to be saints. I'm 6th generation bootleg runner. My father, his, his great-grandfather, etc... I made a few runs until my grandfather found out, then found who I was running for & put a stop to it. It's ok for his grandsons but not his granddaughter... never understand that one but still, I loved the old man even after he died yrs later.

  • He doesn't have his mandolin tuned correctly and it has the wrong number of strings. I think it is a mini 12 string guitar. I guess he couldn't figure out the Violin tuning.

  • Comment removed

  • It is a 12 string Mando in standard tuning. Sorry you can't figure that out, sorry if your ignorance makes me a dildo. The original is played on a standard 8 string with a tuning of G-D-A-E. Learn to play, you may appreciate music more, and not just fall upon ignorance and insults.

  • yeah steve earles version is hard to beat. So are bagpipes. Especially for servicemen.

  • keyboard is no replacement for bagpipes! !

    still great song 5/5

  • i have always loved this song !! I have seen him many times in concert and my only regret was not to have THIS song on cd somewhere !!!ty so much for posting it

  • MOOOOONNNNNSHINNNNEEE!!!!!!

  • he grew weed

  • you got that right!!

  • daaaang....ol' Trav did pretty good coverin' this super classic !

  • The coca plant is not indigenous to mexico or vietnam. It was way more common to get opium and MARIJUANA in vietnam during the war. Thus extrapulating it out--->He making a comparison of Alchohol and marijuana prohibition.

I don't know if its the live edition or the lack of full bagpipes (organ didn't cut it) that left an emptiness to the sound. But leave it to my scott/irish blood to miss an intrument that attrocious sounding lol.

  • i think hes comparing the prohibition of alcohol with marijuana still being illegal.

    the seeds are marijuana seeds.

  • I like this version but I like steve earles waaay better. just can't beat the original

  • agreed

  • Yes really I mean Marietta has a median single income $40,645, and the median income for a family was $47,340. If that were white collar earnings there would be a lot more richer Americans than there are now.

  • It's a pretty solid version but cha just can't beat the bagpipe intro... and Steve's voice just sounds more fitting. You listen to Tritt singing about moonshine and cocaine and you feel like sayin "Sure, Travis." lol

  • lol. Well, there is a bit of truth in it for Travis, because he did Cocaine and pills himself.

  • Yeah and he is a Southern Boy!:)

  • @bigdmck01 isnt this song about moonshine and growing weed...

didnt hear the first ref to cocaine...

  • @Dmc1184 The song is more about moonshine and weed, but the cocaine part can be anybody's interpretation. Columbia is the largest producer of Cocaine in the world. That's the thing about music, everybody can interpret a song to fit their vision.

  • @bigdmck01 Travis did many concerts with Waylon Jennings, who was a raging coke head lol. I'm sure he partook ;) Rest in peace, Waylon!

  • @bigdmck01 Ever heard of Colombian Gold? Some bad ass weed from Colombia. Back in those days weed was weed. The evolution of marijuana was very slow up until the 90s when people started to experiment with different growing method and cross pollination. Colombia and Mexico used to be the producers of the most potent marijuana because of the climate. But now with the advent of indoor growing, Canada and America have become the producers of the most potent. Hope you liked my short history of weed.

  • @bigdmck01 Actually I think it's about cops ie government, leaving rural people the hell alone. unlike gang bangers they use their guns on a daily basis(all military snipers from ARK TENN ALA etc.) and have topographical advantage as well as can hide a dead body where it will never be found. They are also quite clannish, not in the KKK sense necessarily either. STAY THE F#%K AWAY FROM COPPERHEAD ROAD! Dallas Moore hass a really good live version for those that want something close to Steve Earl.

  • moon shine and weed weed is known to come from columbia and mexico

  • Southern states have been known to produce some of the Finnest shit to smoke !!!!

  • @joestrummer2007 Lol, thats exactly the first thing I thought when I heard this version. "Ya right Travis, you don't do that stuff!" Lol

  • right on I love Travis but then I also like steve

  • I MUCH prefer Steve Earle's version. I like Travis, but he really over-sings on this one. The band got it right though.

  • I live in Nashville and Travis Tritt rocks, yall cant say something nice? then i'll tell ya what my momma used to say, if you can't say something nice about someone, then keep your damn mouth shut ! He does this song justice

  • I have to agree with you. I don't know if he is an "outlaw", whatever that is today, but he has the voice and attitude to make his own rules. All I can say is rock on Travis. Even though I don't know him, I'll bet he 'd be a ball to hang out with. He does a great version of this song. Screw all the haters.

  • Have you heard his latest album, "The Storm"? Solid album, his best work in over a decade. Travis is still rollin' on.

  • Thanks for the upload bigdmck01.

  • You are so wrong. Have you ever heard him in concert. 7 LETTERS A-W-E-S-O-M-E-!! Don't knock it until you try it. Deb in Michigan and in love!

  • travis has been around since 1989 and your calling him NEW, wow i wish i had your sence of time.

  • it takes some balls to do a version of this but he does it well i would like to hear steve earles opinion

  • I tried to karaoke it once. An epic disaster. haha.

  • I tried it about 3 months ago and also detroyed it

  • that is 1 thing that i and i am sure a lot of people love about country they share there music and they love when other people respect there sojng enough to sing them that is what cxountry has that know other genre of music has they are one big family of music

  • steve earle sure can write a good song but he cant touch travis tritts voice

  • Travis Tritt can sing well, but I don't like his vocal arrangement on this version.

  • Agreed 100 percent.

  • Covering another artist is a tribute and there is no need to criticize someone for doing such.

I can't think of too many songwriters that are as appreciated or respected as Earle is and his songs are covered by a wide genre of musicians as a result.

However, no matter how talented Steve Earle is, he himself even covers the artists he looked up to like Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark.

  • I would love to hear Travis do some more Steve Earle songs, maybe The Rain Came Down or Snake Oil.

  • DShifle said it ,no one can surpass what Steve Earle did with his original recording!

  • Good version of the song(best of the covers I've heard), but the original's still untouchable IMO.

  • Travis Tritt is the best singer around! When i am down and out i listen to some travis and my day is better!

  • love it Travis has it going been a true fan 4 a long time

  • wow, no steve earle here

  • You go git em travis sing it

  • Why can;t they use real bagpipes.

  • Anyone know if this is available for download? Just the music not the video?

    Thanks

  • none better then Travis Tritt !

  • I don't even like country really but this dude's got a great voice.

  • Whoaaaaaa!!!!! this is better than the original!!!!!

  • This was one of my fav songs back when I was in my teens! Still love the song and all the Steve Earle stuff!! Keep the country rocking!

  • Travis Tritt is the most underated singer in the world but he is the best. Travis rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Travis Did A Very Good Job, My Fave Is Steve's but i dig this one too

  • This version is great, i seen Travis at Speed Street in Charlotte, NC. last summer, I was totally impressed with the man talent ! Travis ROCKS !!

  • Sweet!! Your videos are fantastic -- Thank you for sharing them here! And I love this version; love everything Tritt does for that matter. He's solid country gold.

  • noone one can do it like steve, travis trys to do it different,, oh well at least he tried an no cigar,,,

  • can't duplicate steve earle..... :)

  • im a travis fan! i think hes awsomw so was this!it has alot of of feeling AND HEART!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I see your point..but why would he want to do just like someone else?

    ask yourself that..

    I'm a musician myself,

If a band played a song just like another band, whats the use in the band playing the song?, and plus would you go see someone who did a song just like someone else?

He did this song his own Style...thats what makes music different...
