The main character of the song is the man returning from Vietnam to grow weed. That is at least as important as the moonshine. Steve Earle, who wrote the song, says it is about coming to terms with the war and the way the US failed it's soldiers. He says it is a political song. You are entitled to your opinion, but it is only an opinion.
It's both. Listen to the last verse. It is about a guy from a bootlegging family who comes back from Vietnam and plants weed. "I came home with a brand new plan... I take seeds from Columbia and Mexico, plant 'em up a 'holler down Copperhead Road... now the DEA's got a chopper in the air" (not ATF or revenuers, so it is drugs.) I know the first part is about bootlegging, I was responding to someone who said the last verse was about cocaine.
Thanks for posting this video. I've been a fan of both Steve and Travis since their 1st albums came out. I've never heard Travis Tritt sing this. It's nice to see.
Hey, he is one of my favorite singers.Believe me when i say no one does copperhead road as good as he does. this is my brain saying what it thinks. he is one of the best singers around.
his is real country music. all that stuff now days aint squat
Dad and Mom got married on shine money. Dad ran a load to Jellico Tn and they were married there, June 7 1954. 40 years later Dec.16 1994, thats where I was married.

Travis lives about 15 miles from me...over in Paulding Co. Even though I love Steve Earls version...Travis gives it a true down home feel to this song. I love them both...but Travis playin the guitar on this one truly rocks!!!!
I've seen Steve Earle and Travis Tritt do this song live. They both kick ass. I actually prefer Travis Tritts live version. And steeleydan65 is right... there is no bagpipe...
@tcjb666 oh ya u mean steve earle or travis tritt? u know the original song? i dont think marijuana keeps you up at night idiot when was the last time u did 7 grams in 6 hours? ya thought so...shut up while you think you are ahead

Bottomed out in the early 90s and dropped out of music, got clean in late 94 and has been clean since,

I do like Steve Earls version just fine but personally I like Travis' voice better and I think his personality is every bit as suited to singing about moonshine, marijuana and cocaine. I see him as more of southern rock than traditional country, which is kinda like rockabilly. I like Travis' version just a little bit better. Actually any song that he's covered I liked better than the original - for example, Take it Easy - originally done by the Eagles.
I like Travis's voice for the song, but the arrangement is too slick for my tastes. Needs the mandolin. Though it is better than the arrangement of his cover of Steve's "Sometimes She Forgets." I would love to hear Travis with a more stripped acoustic sound on both songs.

@bigdmck01 TT is nobody's cute little puppy and singing is a business to him as to any professional artist but that boy can DELIVER a song like no-one else does. I am a grown man of nearly 70 but his 'loving and losing' ballads still almost move me to tears. As to 'cocaine' my feeling is that what is ' planted in the holler' is more likely to be pot. The Steve Earle version is great and so is this. Best wishes from the UK where TT has lots of fans.
@bigdmck01 I dont think anyone who knows Travis could cay a bad thing about anything he sings....Hes the greatest voice ever since hank williams. Hell he might be better...amen
Sometimes us humans get carried away by what we hear first and just won't listen to anything else! I do love Steve Earle's 'Copperhead Road' but will not deny myself the pleasure of hearing a rendition of that song by another all time favourite singer of mine; Travis Tritt.
@bigdmck01 yes but during the days when this song first came out there was Colunbian Gold and Mexican green both pot. and because this song was written in the 70's that is what they are refering to
hell yea, i live in wilmington this song gets played just about every night i go out...check out my song "Tennessee Borderline" on my page, it's inspired by steve earle
@buckhunter2191 Even these days, there's a LOT of moonshine still being drove out of NC. The commissioners of an entire down a few towns over from where I live were all brought up on charges after they were caught by the Feds for making & selling moonshine. It was so bad it made national news. Then another high-profile group were caught not long after. It was so bad I figured people thought that's all we do here is make, drink, & run shine. There's plenty of it but it's not ALL we do. LOL!
@MattimusSixStrings doesn't mean he was always a musician or in the music business. Not all of us started out where we ended up & many of us ever claimed to be saints. I'm 6th generation bootleg runner. My father, his, his great-grandfather, etc... I made a few runs until my grandfather found out, then found who I was running for & put a stop to it. It's ok for his grandsons but not his granddaughter... never understand that one but still, I loved the old man even after he died yrs later.
He doesn't have his mandolin tuned correctly and it has the wrong number of strings. I think it is a mini 12 string guitar. I guess he couldn't figure out the Violin tuning.
It is a 12 string Mando in standard tuning. Sorry you can't figure that out, sorry if your ignorance makes me a dildo. The original is played on a standard 8 string with a tuning of G-D-A-E. Learn to play, you may appreciate music more, and not just fall upon ignorance and insults.

The coca plant is not indigenous to mexico or vietnam. It was way more common to get opium and MARIJUANA in vietnam during the war. Thus extrapulating it out--->He making a comparison of Alchohol and marijuana prohibition.
I don't know if its the live edition or the lack of full bagpipes (organ didn't cut it) that left an emptiness to the sound. But leave it to my scott/irish blood to miss an intrument that attrocious sounding lol.
Yes really I mean Marietta has a median single income $40,645, and the median income for a family was $47,340. If that were white collar earnings there would be a lot more richer Americans than there are now.
It's a pretty solid version but cha just can't beat the bagpipe intro... and Steve's voice just sounds more fitting. You listen to Tritt singing about moonshine and cocaine and you feel like sayin "Sure, Travis." lol
@Dmc1184 The song is more about moonshine and weed, but the cocaine part can be anybody's interpretation. Columbia is the largest producer of Cocaine in the world. That's the thing about music, everybody can interpret a song to fit their vision.
@bigdmck01 Ever heard of Colombian Gold? Some bad ass weed from Colombia. Back in those days weed was weed. The evolution of marijuana was very slow up until the 90s when people started to experiment with different growing method and cross pollination. Colombia and Mexico used to be the producers of the most potent marijuana because of the climate. But now with the advent of indoor growing, Canada and America have become the producers of the most potent. Hope you liked my short history of weed.
@bigdmck01 Actually I think it's about cops ie government, leaving rural people the hell alone. unlike gang bangers they use their guns on a daily basis(all military snipers from ARK TENN ALA etc.) and have topographical advantage as well as can hide a dead body where it will never be found. They are also quite clannish, not in the KKK sense necessarily either. STAY THE F#%K AWAY FROM COPPERHEAD ROAD! Dallas Moore hass a really good live version for those that want something close to Steve Earl.
I live in Nashville and Travis Tritt rocks, yall cant say something nice? then i'll tell ya what my momma used to say, if you can't say something nice about someone, then keep your damn mouth shut ! He does this song justice
I have to agree with you. I don't know if he is an "outlaw", whatever that is today, but he has the voice and attitude to make his own rules. All I can say is rock on Travis. Even though I don't know him, I'll bet he 'd be a ball to hang out with. He does a great version of this song. Screw all the haters.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this guy sucks! he's always talking about what an "outlaw" he is. He was raised in the white collar suburbs of Atlanta, some frickin' outlaw. that's why I hate new so called country music and their image they always try to project. Rock on Steve Earle!
that is 1 thing that i and i am sure a lot of people love about country they share there music and they love when other people respect there sojng enough to sing them that is what cxountry has that know other genre of music has they are one big family of music
Covering another artist is a tribute and there is no need to criticize someone for doing such.
I can't think of too many songwriters that are as appreciated or respected as Earle is and his songs are covered by a wide genre of musicians as a result.
However, no matter how talented Steve Earle is, he himself even covers the artists he looked up to like Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark.
Sweet!! Your videos are fantastic -- Thank you for sharing them here! And I love this version; love everything Tritt does for that matter. He's solid country gold.
I see your point..but why would he want to do just like someone else?
ask yourself that..
I'm a musician myself,
If a band played a song just like another band, whats the use in the band playing the song?, and plus would you go see someone who did a song just like someone else?
He did this song his own Style...thats what makes music different...
Needs more mandolin.

i think hes comparing the prohibition of alcohol with marijuana still being illegal.
the seeds are marijuana seeds.

Yes really I mean Marietta has a median single income $40,645, and the median income for a family was $47,340. If that were white collar earnings there would be a lot more richer Americans than there are now.
lovehockey64 2 years ago
It's a pretty solid version but cha just can't beat the bagpipe intro... and Steve's voice just sounds more fitting. You listen to Tritt singing about moonshine and cocaine and you feel like sayin "Sure, Travis." lol
joestrummer2007 2 years ago
lol. Well, there is a bit of truth in it for Travis, because he did Cocaine and pills himself.
bigdmck01 2 years ago
Yeah and he is a Southern Boy!:)
lovehockey64 2 years ago
@bigdmck01 isnt this song about moonshine and growing weed...
didnt hear the first ref to cocaine...
Dmc1184 10 months ago
@Dmc1184 The song is more about moonshine and weed, but the cocaine part can be anybody's interpretation. Columbia is the largest producer of Cocaine in the world. That's the thing about music, everybody can interpret a song to fit their vision.
bigdmck01 10 months ago
@bigdmck01 Travis did many concerts with Waylon Jennings, who was a raging coke head lol. I'm sure he partook ;) Rest in peace, Waylon!

I MUCH prefer Steve Earle's version. I like Travis, but he really over-sings on this one. The band got it right though.

Screw all the haters.
kukidude70 2 years ago 2
Have you heard his latest album, "The Storm"? Solid album, his best work in over a decade. Travis is still rollin' on.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
this guy sucks! he's always talking about what an "outlaw" he is. He was raised in the white collar suburbs of Atlanta, some frickin' outlaw. that's why I hate new so called country music and their image they always try to project. Rock on Steve Earle!
lonz46 2 years ago
You are so wrong. Have you ever heard him in concert. 7 LETTERS A-W-E-S-O-M-E-!! Don't knock it until you try it. Deb in Michigan and in love!

Travis Tritt can sing well, but I don't like his vocal arrangement on this version.

Agreed 100 percent.

I would love to hear Travis do some more Steve Earle songs, maybe The Rain Came Down or Snake Oil.

DShifle said it ,no one can surpass what Steve Earle did with his original recording!

Good version of the song(best of the covers I've heard), but the original's still untouchable IMO.

flutterbydust 2 years ago 3
I see your point..but why would he want to do just like someone else?
ask yourself that..
I'm a musician myself,
If a band played a song just like another band, whats the use in the band playing the song?, and plus would you go see someone who did a song just like someone else?
He did this song his own Style...thats what makes music different...
